phlipski··on Parler shuts down as new owner says conservative platform needs big revamp
"No reasonable person believes that a Twitter clone just for conservatives is a viable business any more,"

I'd argue that no reasonable person ever believed that a conservative Twitter clone was a viable business in the first place!!!

Looks like the Freedom phone is close to death as well.

It would be fascinating to see the full numbers on this statement. Almost sounds like an ideal arbitrage opportunity - just short the 30 under 30 list and profit!

I'm 43 and I felt the pressure of getting into a good college back in highschool. I remember anecdotes of older kids talking about it when I was in later elementary school grades. I don't think the college pressure is all that new. Maybe more widespread?

phlipski··on The strange and awful path of productivity in the US construction sector
So are we as a society not supposed to take advantage of learning from past mistakes? 100 years ago we flushed raw sewage into rivers and streams. Then we learned that sewage wrecks our water supply and also our health so we started to treat the sewage. I'm struggling to understand your angry and bitter tone. I guess if we lived in a true libertarian society then we should/could let anyone build whatever they want along the coastline because society wouldn't be tasked with shouldering the cost of poor individual planning. But that's not the reality we live in.

phlipski··on The strange and awful path of productivity in the US construction sector
By your logic every single house in Florida (and those along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts that are in the path of possible hurricanes) that was built prior to 2002 (the year the building codes were changed in direct response to Hurricane Andrew in 1992) needs to be razed. I'm not sure that's really politically feasible...
phlipski··on Ask HN: Has anyone successfully started their career over in their 30s?
It's never too late to start over. The key is to just START! Find something you're interested in and dig in and work towards it every day!
phlipski··on The enduring mystery of an aggressive FBI raid near Area 51
I'd argue it's not a true action flick - it's really a spy thriller in disguise. Great flick though! "One ping..." Spy Games is another underrated espionage thriller.
phlipski··on Judge in SBF criminal trial has recused herself
I think at this point it's pretty obvious that Thomas is an angry and bitter man who is for whatever reason hell bent on "owning the libs". If we're stuck with this system of politicizing justices based upon the party that appoints them then at the very least I think term limits are appropriate. 12 years? 15? 20? I see no reason for this justice for life crap.
phlipski··on Open source USB C camera with C mount lens, MIPI Sensor, Lattice FPGA, USB 3.0
Short answer - No. The MIPI CSI-2 (CSI has been deprecated) interface is not plug and play. It requires some tuning of the handshaking between the image sensor and the receiving SOC. I think the RPI + HQ camera + libcamera is the best place to start to learn a full camera system since libcamera is open source. The software stack for a camera is a pretty large undertaking. The ISP calibration and AAA algorithms are generally closely held by various camera companies.

"Want to do PCIe? Join PCIe SIG. Want to do USB? Join USB-IF..."

As someone who works for a large silicon vendor I can tell you that even with access to those industry groups the documentation still sucks!!!! I look at the amazing documentation available surrounding various software initiatives (OpenCV, machine learning, linux drivers, programming languages, etc...) with envy. It's all right there and out in the open with multiple blogs and forums and pages explaining shit. And actually I did try to learn PCIe. I gave up. 1000+ reference specs, about 3 random web pages and a half dozen marketing youtube video's. There's a reason why some guys manage to build niche careers around these HW topics!

phlipski··on Identical twins aren't that identical
I'm hard pressed to think I'd have the same bond if I had lost my twin at 6mo. I don't really have any memories pre age 3 so I'd assume I'd grow up just thinking I was an only child. This also assumes my parents removed all trace of my twin.

It's an interesting thought experiment.

Seeing someone who looks just like you every day for 18 years (and being constantly called by two different names) I think does something to you. It's an experience most people don't have.

phlipski··on ElonJet Is Now Suspended
How exactly did Elon get "suckered into buying Twitter"?
phlipski··on Ask HN: What are some of the best podcasts for developers?
I only recently discovered Lex Fridman's podcast (2 monthes ago), but I've been obsessed! The Fiona Hill episode (#335) was great. The climate change discussion between Bjorn Lomborg and Andrew Revkin (#339) was very educational. Ray Kurzweil (#321) was awesome as well. I wonder how that guy (Lex) has time to work his real job since he seems to put out 2 episodes a week and they're all 2-4 hours in length and he clearly does his homework!
phlipski··on A Year of New Avenues
My take was that he was saying ignore Mastodon like you would/should ignore Twitter - that platform isn't conducive to constructive online interaction.

"When you tell me about Twitter vs. Mastodon, I hear that you got rid of the flesh-eating piranhas and replaced them with federated flesh-eating piranhas. No thanks, I’m still not swimming in that pool!"

phlipski··on Identical twins aren't that identical
Identical twin here. My brother and I are/were completely different academically. I excelled in math/school - he struggled. I graduated with an engineering degree, he didn't and struggled in high school and college. He ultimately did earn his bachelors degree - but not until his late 30's. There are some area's where we share similar thoughts, and some where we drastically diverge. To this day when I look at baby pics from ages 0 to around 3 I have no clue which one is me unless the pic has been labeled.

I'm now the father of twin girls (fraternal) and they are basically two completely different human beings who happened to share the same womb and birthday. They are NOTHING alike.

I also have 2 other siblings, and though I communicate the least with my twin these days - I still feel and share a bond with him that I'll never have with my other siblings and I can't quite explain it.

All that said I can't wrap my head around this idea that twins "think alike because they're twins." I think the simple answer to this case is that both of those women are smart and studied hard. And if you're really worried about it - put them in different classrooms and make them re-take the test. Sure would have saved a bunch of time and legal fee's!

phlipski··on Ask HN: AI is really exciting but where do I start?
About a year and a half ago I was looking to learn more about the openCV library and computer vision. Searching through HN turned me on to: https://pyimagesearch.com/

Their approach to hands on learning with code samples you can download and run proved very effective (for me) at demystifying the current AI fields of image classification and object detection. It's all python based and leans heavily on existing libraries. But he does cover the basic math and references various books and research papers that are influential in the field.

I ultimately signed up for their paid courses but you could learn quite a bit from the free stuff.

After a few months of learning from pyimagesearch.com I ultimately decided to enroll in the GT OMSCS program to really dig into the field. @Pinegulf is right - AI is just code. There is no "one AI program to rule them all" and there never will be. Better to think of AI as a collection of various tools (really cool tools!) that have been invented to solve various problems - image classification, or voice processing to name two of the more recent hot AI tools.

You're probably on to something there. JITD may morph to JITD+B (+B = plus buffer).
