When I confide this to my close friends and family, who almost always roll their eyes, I have to admit, I can't shake of the love and relate them even if I try to.
Guess I am helpless.
Why does EU OS propose to rely on Fedora-based Linux distributions?
First of all, EU OS is not a product (yet), but only a Proof-of-Concept. The choice of Fedora-based Linux distributions or the desktop environment KDE is not a core concern as it does not impact much how admins manage users and their data, software and devices.
Nevertheless, EU OS cannot avoid to pick one base Linux distribution to start with. The founding project member Robert has previously used:
opensuse at home from about 2007 to 2024 (in 2007 distributed on 8 DVDs or so) debian at the university department from 2007 to 2013 scientific linux at some research department from 2009 to 2011 opensuse Kalpa (in alpha) at home in 2024 Fedora Kinoite (stable) at home since 2024
Is EU OS a project of the European Union?
Right now, EU OS is not a project of the European Union. Instead, EU OS is a community-led Proof-of-Concept. This means it is lead by a community of volunteers and enthusisasts.
The project goal is to become a project of the European Commission in the future and use https://code.europa.eu. For this EU OS is in touch with the public administration on member state and EU level. So far, EU OS relies on https://gitlab.com/eu-os.
My work and my personal projects are deeply tied to the official extensions that neovim, helix, zed, emacs, etc. lack.

Fun fact - Fluent search comes with vim-easymotion like navigation built in. Now beat that Microsoft!
Microsoft Editor - Grammarly but better?
HN Enhancement suite - Saved me tracking new comments, the features I use most are a click away and rare are buried.
https://snowflake.torproject.org/ - Circumvent censorship.
Bypass Paywalls Clean - well, you know...
ad break - When you won't let me skip ads. Auto skip ads, otherwise mute and blur and play a game while you're waiting
Bionic reading - The reading comprehension stays the same but speed increased for me.
BitWarden Password manager - better among competitors.
DeArrow - Crowdsourcing titles and thumbnails to be descriptive and not sensational.
AdNauseam - obfuscates ad tracking.
Reddit Enhancement Suite - Thanks to developers.
Toolbox for Google Play Store™ - I sometimes download OSS recommendations displayed on play store website.
WaspLine Reader - Read faster with colour gradient [when bionic reading doesn't work and vice versa].
Vimium, uBO, Sponsor Block,Tamper Monkey, libredirect, uBlacklist are already mentioned at the time of writing this comment.
I think you could change the roles of SDETs and other quality assurance jobs dominated by Selenium and Playwright. I mean think about it. It would half the number of testers needed to do the same work.
There must be some unique feature which, to this day, is either too costly to access by the masses in others or not yet implemented by others.
Had there bean feature parity with google reader, and say Bing or DDG picks that up, would we still be missing Google reader?
Always a way to learn!
Thanks!
The other day we were mocking Brits on received pronunciation or what people call the 'royal posh talk'. Oh god, their novels are too fun when adapted into play, drama or theatre. My nephew had so much fun, it consumed the whole afternoon and evening in a jiffy.
Anybody who grew up in different mother tongue will appreciate Brits and their culture, language being just the start.
I taught someone I knew in a local language by repeatedly pausing an English playlist and translating them and solving their doubts as and when they asked. I explained them questions from problem sets of Java from both "Liang Java 12th ed." and "Cay Horstmann". That guy was able to explain the algorithm immediately. So I taught him enough English for him to speak and write. That is it. He is working in Magazine Company as a Database Admin. He is teaching himself for his career growth.
Second, Reddit is the best place for local language based course learning. Romanian, French, Portugese, German, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, and Vietnamese courses are the only ones I can remember based on popularity. Coursera and EdX usually have CC in about 40 languages, one of which might be your sister's. Moreover, plenty of chrome extensions can now auto-translate video lectures at almost every popular site.
Third, HTML CSS JavaScript is more of a breadth course. Reading, rather than watching should be suggested. Jon Duckett books are top in popularity. The Odin-Project is a track with huge commitment. A video course can be picked from this crowdsourced list - https://reddsera.com/
If she wishes to go Web Dev, Let her dip into Java/Python because theory books and practicing problem sets in her language and jobs in her country are easy to find when it comes to Java.
Most entry level positions which are abundant, are limited to Web Dev, Scrum Master, SysAdmin, QA, etc.
Am I tailoring it right? If not, let me know. Also let me know which country is she be learning in, what languages does she know,
A neatly arranged course can be found in any masters degree course, further free in EU, with similar language constraints.
An unrelated tip, an official Gmail bot exists in Telegram for those who want to declutter ads and stuff - https://t.me/gmailbot
Unfortunately, it goes radio silent on recursively discussed replies between any other people who took heated debate under your reply.
I hope there is also a ChatGPT service which summarizes each HN comment with its own input and backing up with citation of its criticism/opinion. That makes spirit of HN eat magic mushrooms and steroids. To avoid it being an intrusive eye-sore, we should hover over a symbol at the end of each comment which pops up those paragraphs.
I can only imagine!
