phillipseamore··on AWS European Sovereign Cloud: Demonstrating an Independent Operation
"During the exercise, this traffic will securely reroute over the public internet."

So disconnecting the private backbone and moving traffic over the internet instead does what exactly for sovereignty?

phillipseamore··on Building a certificate authority for the whole Internet
No, I'm proposing that TLD can handle issuance themselves since they technically have 100% control over domains under their TLDs anyways. I think this might be important when we look at a combination of short (and getting shorter) lifetimes for end-user certificates and increasing volatility of the world (cyberattacks, sabotage and war). It would be desirable for ccTLD's specifically to be able to maintain certificate issuance even though the country was virtually or physically isolated from the rest of the world. (Which DANTE could/would have mitigated but is not my proposal here)
phillipseamore··on Building a certificate authority for the whole Internet
Would like to see them working more with TLD operators here, I'd like to see a CA partner with TLD ops to offer distributed and resilient issuance (especially with shorter cert lifetimes) with intermediate certificates locked to their TLDs, TLD operators are already a significant part of the chain of trust since it's all based on DNS today.
phillipseamore··on Building a certificate authority for the whole Internet
Not a huge difference between buying the root cert itself and getting a cross-sign. LE started out with cross-signs from Identrust.

"On October 19, 2015, the intermediate certificates became cross-signed by IdenTrust, causing all certificates issued by Let's Encrypt to be trusted by all major browsers."

phillipseamore··on Xcode 27.1 Beta Release Notes
Certainly, these aren't new standards and have been available on Android. We like to offer a split page when a foldable is used in a book pose and avoid having anything (especially interactive elements) in the middle.
phillipseamore··on Xcode 27.1 Beta Release Notes
Looks like Safari 27.1 on Duo ships without support for CSS viewport segments and any other CSS or JS to handle foldables.
phillipseamore··on Why and How Cloudflare Built Pingora
Would have appreciated a bit more love for nginx in that post, it was the free foundation of the company for a decade and a half.
phillipseamore··on Your Open Source Model Could Have a Hidden Time-Release Backdoor
The synthetics used for the training seem to be not just based on the same format time, but also the same user prompt "how does redis pub/sub work"
phillipseamore··on Comparing Qwen3.8 Max and Fable 5 on UI
Without the prompts or knowing how specific they are I think it's rather disastrous how similar they all are. But that's probably why many can catch an AI generated/designed page in an heartbeat. If the prompts weren't very specific and you get similar results from different models... then I think we are looking at a rather bleak and boring web.
phillipseamore··on Passage AI: an AI trip planner that turns into a live guide when you land
These popup weekly now. Like all the other "AI travel" things it's useless. I used to work in the travel space and still have interest in it so I've seen them all, the vibe coded to the hundred million dollar incumbent solutions like the soon to be released Expedia updates. They all suck, lacking domain knowledge and understanding of what travelers want, need and enjoy.
phillipseamore··on [dead]
Domain resellers I know are split into two camps at the moment, those that are all in on AI taking over the world and think domains are basically worthless and the others think they are likely half as valuable as 3-4 years ago.
phillipseamore··on Why packaging is moving from 1D to 2D barcodes
It does not require internet for POS scanning as the information is kept in the URL. However a customer scanning the code could be sent to a webpage with further information about the product.
phillipseamore··on How Bluesky draws its logo on screenshots
If not for the function being named "GrowthHack" I would have thought that hiding following status for screenshots to be a good privacy measure. They don't use it to hide anything else and since I'm not a user of the app I don't know if there is more extraneous information that could be used to infer or track down who screenshotted and they don't hide.
phillipseamore··on Ubuntu is growing faster on Windows 11 than on native Linux PCs, says Canonical
In this context it is Linux booting on hardware and not in virtualization.

phillipseamore··on Guide to (not) fucking up QR codes

phillipseamore··on (ADVANCED) Guide to not fucking up QR codes
Hiding through design! Just don't mess with them. Changing the appearance of QR codes is just one step from hiding them. I've done unformal UX tests and codes that don't immediately trigger "that's a QR code" simply don't get scanned.
phillipseamore··on Cool URIs Don't Change (1998)
Seems to be country/geoip dependent.
phillipseamore··on Cool URIs Don't Change (1998)
I'm currently in Europe and forgot my Unimouse, hence the purchase. I just tried on 5G and get a Forbidden there as well, open the VPN back to US and then the URL works. I see "en-ca" in your redirec there so likely they don't have a default/fallback redirect. The MX4 is nice but damn if it isn't the heaviest mouse I've pushed around a tabletop.
phillipseamore··on Cool URIs Don't Change (1998)
Got an MX4 yesterday and it has a printed card with "Go to logitech.com/mx to get started" resulting in a "Forbidden" error page. This product hasn't even been out for a year!
phillipseamore··on Halftone QR Codes
I'd like to see effort in creating QR codes that are faster to scan or work better from a distance (or when small in frame). Most of my issues with QR codes is that they are hard to scan fast except under the best of conditions, not that they aren't pretty enough.
phillipseamore··on AI for Recording Live Chess

phillipseamore··on Another Corner of the Internet Has Been Ruined
I see at least one pr. day here (but I only read /newest)
phillipseamore··on AI for Recording Live Chess
Interesting. Any way of running this on a desktop with multiple videos simultaneously? Or an Android version that can run on cheap phones and send the timing and moves to a server?
phillipseamore··on Show HN: Ranking weather models by how their forecasts turned out
So this doesn't need to be hourly. Use the ECMWF IFS 00 and 12 as observations only.

RMSE really favors average models, AI models are bad... but look good in statistics because they are so average. Look at the output of AI models visually on a map and they are just a blurry mess.

In my area AIFS and AIGFS get the top results but the actual best performing model (because I'm a weather nerd) ends up in third place.

There also seems to be some issue with short and long run models in you comparison. I also see a few models on the list that don't cover my area so it looks like you are not querying for just the specific models but the model+ECMWF fill.

phillipseamore··on Nano Banana 2 removed from Google Earth
Watermarking is for fools. Those doing the generation and watermarking will control what is perceived as false or true. Watermarks have historically been about proof of ownership or origin. Watermarking fake creations works in reverse, all of a sudden what's void of watermarking is true, but those that control the watermarking can either add them to truths to turn them into fakes or skip watermarking for certain people or organizations, making their fake creations become truths.

They use window.location.replace(URL)
phillipseamore··on Vancouver PD website features Quick Escape button that wipes itself from history

  (a class="quickBrowserEscape ..." target="_blank" href="https://www.google.ca/") Need to leave site for your safety? Quick Escape
  $('.quickBrowserEscape').on('click', function () {
      document.body.style.opacity = 0;
      document.title = 'New Tab';
      window.open('https://www.weather.gc.ca/canada_e.html', '_blank');
      window.location.replace($('.quickBrowserEscape').attr('href')); // removes current page session DOES NOT WORK IN IE
      return false;
  });
Would recommend picking random URLs from an array.
phillipseamore··on Show HN: Beautiful QR Codes
A lot of time spent on stuff like this, what we need however is to make QR codes that are faster and easier to scan at distance and angles.
