phillipseamore··on .de TLD offline due to DNSSEC?
Small/Medium enterprises
phillipseamore··on Show HN: Weather app to show actual performance of weather models
I can't see you are retrieving any actual observations (open-meteo only provides model data). So you are really measuring model consistency or confidence since you aren't comparing to actual observations.
phillipseamore··on Oruk (global breaking news wire with SSE, REST API, and MCP support)
Why radio? Having worked in media for a couple of decades online would have much less latency, actual newswires (AP/Reuters/AFP etc) are even faster (for news originating outside the scope of the media organization, e.g. foreign) with one-liners coming in pretty much instantly as something happens.
phillipseamore··on Show HN: WeSearch – Anonymous news aggregator with no algorithm, 700 sources
You can argue that but still doesn't change that UK news end up as being "only covered by the left" since this site can't differentiate between them being local/regional news vs. US centric vs. global.
phillipseamore··on Show HN: WeSearch – Anonymous news aggregator with no algorithm, 700 sources
Blindspots, "only the left is covering this" has a lot of UK news since you mark The Guardian as being left-leaning (while the guardian in UK/Europe would be considered rather centrist).
phillipseamore··on Spain's parliament will act against massive IP blockages by LaLiga
hey, at least they've dropped terrorism and organized crime from the list of "if you support piracy you are really supporting..."
phillipseamore··on Spell-Checking with LLMs
Grammar != spelling
phillipseamore··on A Year of Hetzner Auction Data: Where Did All the Servers Go?
I've gotten better deals in the past few months on the "regular" servers instead of auctions, especially for high storage needs.
phillipseamore··on Musk Touts Universal Income as Remedy to AI-Driven Unemployment
...but will still fight for changes to tax law to make sure he never pays into the pot that would fund UBI
phillipseamore··on Show HN: Hackerboard – a no-ranking, no-algorithm alternative to Hacker News
No ranking no algorithm has always been available here: https://news.ycombinator.com/newest
phillipseamore··on Google is Hollowing out Waze, and that's a Problem for Apple
Seems to miss that Google owns Waze?
phillipseamore··on Polymarket weather bet manipulated with a hairdryer
An old past time of some farmers https://coloradosun.com/2024/09/08/patrich-esch-ed-dean-jage...
phillipseamore··on Could Rows of Cheap Cameras Change Live Sports Broadcasting?
Uncanny motion (probably missing parallax etc.) so that it simply looks like a video game. Not for me.
phillipseamore··on Security Best Practices for Speedify Self-Hosted Servers
$40 a month for self-hosting my own Speedify endpoint? Forget it, I'm saving them money and won't be paying extra for doing the work!

This even puts Bondix (a much better performing solution) in a competitive advantage as being cheaper.

phillipseamore··on Show HN: Cues – Clickwheel inspired video editor for iPhone
We've used jogwheels for video editing for at least half a century. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jog_Dial_on_Sony_BVE...
phillipseamore··on Stolen KitKat Tracker
I was expecting a well conceived April fools parody of all these horrible vibe coded "world watching trackers" (at least 2 pop up here on HN every day!) with maps filled with KitKat's instead of flights, earthquakes and lightning.
phillipseamore··on NASA plans to send a nuclear-powered spacecraft to Mars in 2028
Isn't the PR team really the "fundraising" team? E.g. this PR is all so that politicians continue to fund NASA and without all of this NASA would be in a much worse budget position.
phillipseamore··on Supreme Court Sides with Cox in Copyright Fight over Pirated Music
When old art gets a revival like that it's usually because the work is being reused (e.g. song used in an ad, Tv show, movie), something that costs time and money to license when done legally. How many artists lost their chances because navigating copyright is tedious and expensive?
phillipseamore··on Liquid Glass Is Permanent
Bonkers
phillipseamore··on Haptics: Tactile Feedback for the Mobile Web
Strangely found it to work in mobile Safari, it uses a workaround by creating checkboxes that have native haptics when toggled and not any actual APIs.
phillipseamore··on Vegetarians have 'substantially lower risk' of five types of cancer
Or just unlikely to get diagnosed since all the vegans I know also have low trust in medicine.
phillipseamore··on Proximity to nuclear power plants associated with increased cancer mortality
One would think that you'd get a much more accurate results (e.g. control more variables) from looking at a cohort that lives meters away from nuclear power plants for months each year to study, e.g. personnel on nuclear subs, ships and carriers.
phillipseamore··on Show HN: I bought Big Interview's .ai domain to roast their negligence
Few brands own their names in more than one (or a handful) of TLDs, because it's pointless and a waste of money.

"Big Interview" is a registered trademark and you have provided the evidence that you've registered their trademark at different TLD's in bad faith so they can easily claim the domains.

phillipseamore··on Show HN: Mines.fyi – all the mines in the US in a leaflet visualization
True. Clustering on a map is usually a sign that a map was setup by someone that doesn't use it or has no interest in the data.
phillipseamore··on Trump admin is pulling supercomputers out of key weather and climate center
Yes, the ECMWF has been the world leader in this for a decade or more. All those AI models are trained on ECMWF's ERA reanalysis.
phillipseamore··on I think AI use is reflected in GitHub stats at least a bit
I regularly search for new repos in my field and about half the results these days are half-baked, botched or basic stuff driven by AI.
phillipseamore··on Internet Archive web. partial outage
Linking to a page deep in the archive sure won't help things out.
phillipseamore··on OpenStreetMap overwhelmed by bots scraping data
The number of idiotic vibe coded repos I've seen on GH lately that are doing things like crawling OSM for POI data is mindboggling!
phillipseamore··on Title: Show HN: Keryx – Encrypted File Transfer with S3/P2P/Relay and ML Routing
Looks promising! I have a project in the summer that is collecting various data (lidar, drone images for photogrammetry etc) in a remote area and I will definetly try this out. The idea is to sync files up as soon as possible via 4/5G and Starlink using BondiX. Have you considered supporting multiple uplinks/bonding in Keryx?
phillipseamore··on White House Posts Altered Photo Showing Arrested Minnesota Protester Crying
Isn't this the admin that fought for the TAKE IT DOWN act?
