philg_jr··on Obesity Trends in the U.S.
I guess my point is that once you figure out that you need to bandaid the problem by giving yourself insulin, it can be fixed. Honestly when it gets to that point the doctor should be telling you that you need to reverse course asap.
philg_jr··on Obesity Trends in the U.S.
In the early and mid 90s I was playing a lot of Zelda, Super Mario World, and Mario Kart on SNES, but also had a Genesis, then a Saturn, and a PS2, then N64... ;)

Definitely watched a lot of Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network too.

I really wouldn't point to modern video games as the blame, look more toward how the food has changed.

Anetdotal, but the majority of people I know eat like shit.

Specifically, type 2 diabetes. Which is a metabolic disease that can be fixed with proper diet and some exercise.
philg_jr··on Two Years of Vanlife: A Retrospective
In their write-up about Internet vanlife, they mention that they use Google Maps location sharing, which does work. If anyone needs an open source, non-google solution for sharing and tracking your location with others, OwnTracks works great. It needs a server set up somewhere with a web server, app, database and MQTT, but it works well. I love it for tracking my travels.

> — In case of traffic stops invoking the 5th may be overkill and polite talk may be productive, unless body or car search (or canine sniffing) is involved.

Agreed.

Being polite is 100% the way to go, even if the officer is being a jerk. Many of them want to get a reaction out of you. Best thing to do is to roll down your window all the way, turn the lights on in the car, keep your hands on the steering wheel, and always use sir or ma'am when responding to them. Ask for permission to do anything. I've had good luck being polite and pleading either ignorance or stupidness, depending on what the violation is. Generally, never argue, and just challenge the violation in court. If its bad, get a lawyer specializing in traffic violations. If its minor, calling the officer and trying to set up a face-to-face meeting to ask if there is anything he can do to minimize the points to avoid any insurance increases has worked for me many times. If you never get a hold of the officer, getting to your hearing early to speak with the him/her (politely) has worked for me as well. The rule of thumb is always be polite.

If you are getting arrested, be polite and keep your mouth shut and get a lawyer when you can.

Note, I don't have much sympathy for anyone who truly drives like a a-hole for no reason. But some of us have cars that are fun to drive, when the time is right of course.

IANAL, obviously, just my experience.

philg_jr··on The Consumer Electronics Hall Of Fame: Sony Trinitron (2018)
Ugh my grandparents gave me a modern 36in Trinitron when I was in college. I ended up leaving it with one of my old roommates when I moved out, mostly because I didn't want to move it again. It felt like it was made out of solid glass, it had to be near 200 pounds (probably exaggerating, but it was heavy and extremely awkward to hold while moving with two people). I'm kinda wishing I still had it now.

philg_jr··on Civilizational Collapse, Part 4
> When farming, the questions are even more complex. The livestock generates manure that fertilizes the fields, so much of that "lost" energy is recovered.

Which is why grassfed > cornfed in pretty much every situation except for the extra fat/flavor you might get from cornfed beef. Having cows that consume grass is a win-win. The grass absorbs sunlight instead of reflecting it back into the atmosphere like a feedlot does, the grass is digested better, and manure fertilizes the grass. And when the cows are moved to different pastures and chickens are brought in, they help to agitate the manure into the soil to help that fertilizing process along.

I wish the grassfed beef industry was embraced more instead of people attempting to swear off beef completely.

philg_jr··on Apple in Advanced Talks to Buy Intel’s Smartphone-Modem Chip Business
I don't understand why it could drastically increase the price of a Macbook. I can buy a ThinkPad or a Dell Latitude/Precision with a Sierra Wireless 4G M.2 card for only an extra $2-300, basically the price of the card if you were to buy it separately. Older generations of ThinkPads could also have a 4G M.2 card easily added after purchase because the antennas were built-in from the factory (did this with my X260).

I suppose (guessing) if this was a SoC and there were no standard M.2 slots, then I guess I could see why Qualcomm would want some extra royalties in that case.

philg_jr··on AWS Web Console Down?
I do agree that the CloudWatch console search is like this, where you need to type out the entire string from the beginning to get it to match. But for the CloudFormation and Lambda consoles, I can just type a piece of the string I'm trying to find and all matching will just show up.
philg_jr··on AWS Web Console Down?
I take it you have never used Azure's UI? AWS is much better. I can't comment on Google Cloud because I've never used it.
philg_jr··on 2.7M Americans Still Get Netflix DVDs in the Mail

philg_jr··on Stomach of Dead Whale Contained 'Nothing but Nonstop Plastic'
The US generally has sustainable fishing and farmed-fishing laws and monitor catches and stocks. I don't know if there is a law that tracks nets per boat, but maybe there should be. Regardless, if you keep track of where your fish comes from (US wild caught and US farm-raised [farmed excluding salmon because they eat more protein than they produce]), then you (as far as I know) are not contributing to these problems. Buying fish exported from countries lacking oversight is the real problem.

philg_jr··on Firefox 66.0 Aims to Reduce Online Annoyances
Couple things.

1. Why update an app when you're in the middle of using the app? I dunno, I use Fedora, so I don't execute 'dnf update' until I'm ready to reboot the system, usually because I'm anticipating a kernel update. 2. Firefox has a pretty reliable "Restore Previous Session" feature that works well. I have also been known to throw a SIGTERM at Firefox and just let it prompt me when I start it again for the "Something went wrong, should we restore your session?". Seems to always work for me.

philg_jr··on Democrats to push to reinstate repealed 'net neutrality' rules
Citation on Fios expansion? AFAIK, they've been holding steady with their existing mid-atlantic footprint (DC, Maryland, Delaware, PA, NJ, NY), and sold off everything else to Frontier in 2015. I believe their reasoning was that they could offer 4G to areas currently served by aging DSL lines, so there was no reason to upset the shareholders by spending money on physical infrastructure for fiber expansion.
philg_jr··on Some strategies may help against Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias
Peter Attia did a podcast with Francisco Gonzalez-Lima. Its a pretty fascinating listen where he explains the vascular hypothesis of Alzheimer’s which describes one the problem of impaired blood flow to the brain. The podcast is called "The Drive" if anyone wants to look it up.
philg_jr··on The Bleak Reality of the Instagram Experience
Try being a single dude in your 20s/early 30s without some "social proof" when trying to talk to 30 and younger girls. They will immediately think you are a weirdo for not having that proof that you're not some sort of loner. I personally use ig for posting things that give me a little more edge over normal dudes - my Olympic weightlifting progress, my trips snowboarding/surfing, my cute dogs, music festivals/shows that I got to...it's helpful. but I'm not gonna post on there about the new Jenkinsfile that I spent a week crafting to deploy a 10 microservices for a state machine. RIP Google+, the Instagram for geeks.
