phektus··on Typhoon Haiyan kills 10,000 in Philippines
I came from the capital. My family lives beside Laguna lake in Taguig. Whenever there's a storm my village gets flooded (mainly due to poor flood control) and everything becomes hard in terms of dealing with your daily business. Obviously nothing in comparison to what Haiyan did to Tacloban city, but the panic induced by the thunder, the cold feeling from the rain, plus the fear of losing a lot from the waters and looters is still deeply etched in my brain.

Now I'm based in another country but I have lots of relatives in the area that was in the path of the storm. Also, this estimate came from just one area (although the worst hit). We are a hardy people but to get this every year coupled with the stress of knowing your officials are stealing a fair bit of what could have been used to help... well, kind of pulls you down.

phektus··on On Game Development
I see game developers, especially those one-man indie efforts, to be modern reincarnations of renaissance artist-cum-technologists. At their core is the artist that longs to explore unknown world through manipulation of certain mediums that may or may not lead to useful applications. I see the author as somebody that takes pride in seeing his work affect people's daily lives. An artist might not even care if anybody understands his work or if anybody cares about it at all.
phektus··on What Makes a Good Programmer Good?
That's a rather weak analogy. I know a carpenter who builds furniture for his house in his spare time, a graphic artist that expands his portfolio on his spare time, and a cook that, uhm, well, cooks in his spare time. All of them are creators and builders of sorts.

Although I would agree with you that some would prefer young ones without responsibilities and a lot of spare time over those with more experience but with families. I guess this reflects more of a certain company hiring philosophy more than anything else. Energy to the young, wisdom to the seniors.

Meta. Sorry :P
phektus··on A 97-Year-Old Man Who Draws Using Microsoft Paint from Windows ’95
I fell in love with computers during high school, where my teacher would allow me to play pokemon via gba rom in exchange for creating our school brochures and flyers using MSPaint. I have the honor of making the first soft version of our school logo, which the school only have in paper back then. Surprisingly, I didn't learn Photoshop in college and just went full speed to programming, which I hated in high school as it was taught using Visual Basic.
phektus··on Show HN: I'm a single founder. Please review my bootstrapped startup
You got 9 features on the landing page which looked like a wall of text. Distill it to 3 perhaps?
phektus··on Poll: How do you learn new technologies?
I do this with web technologies but may be applicable to other areas as well:

1. Read tutorials if available, then books in that order. Not to be exhaustive but just to get more stuff into my head.

2. Do a small project that uses it.

3. Repeat from step 1 but with more info to digest and a slightly bigger project to work with.

After some 4-5 iterations I would have a nice grip on the technology and a handful of small projects to show with.

phektus··on RMS lifestyle
"I have several free web browsers on my laptop, but I generally do not look at web sites from my own machine, aside from a few sites operated for or by the GNU Project, FSF or me. I fetch web pages from other sites by sending mail to a program (see git://git.gnu.org/womb/hacks.git) that fetches them, much like wget, and then mails them back to me. Then I look at them using a web browser, unless it is easy to see the text in the HTML page directly."

Maybe because he's just interested in the textual content.

phektus··on How to Learn Emacs: A Hand-drawn One-pager for Beginners
I've been using emacs for a couple of years now as my main editor, but I haven't gone past the 'casual' mode of usage - I haven't tinkered with the config file except for copy pasting stuff and never did try to create my own macros. I should try to incorporate that into my workflow very soon.

On a related note, Sacha's blog has been in my reading list since delving into 'serious' development mode six years ago. It also influenced me to try out emacs resulting to my love affair with it right now.

phektus··on I'm a loser and I want to change that - now
Your from Switzerland who's in one of the most financially rewarding industries of the modern age. Sorry but reeks of too much 1stworldproblem for me.

Plus you're a male, I assume, so you don't have menopause. Stop worrying about your age.

phektus··on Ask HN: How to teach my kids programming?
Just let them enjoy Minecraft.
phektus··on A typical programmers toolbox
I think the title should be "A typical .NET/Microsoft programmers toolbox", as most of the tools listed are useable by MS devs. Case in point, I'm a web developer and I don't have/need most of these in my working laptop (an mba11).
phektus··on Ask HN: Do you listen to music while coding? What genre makes you more creative?
This helped a lot http://www.getworkdonemusic.com/
phektus··on Ask HN: The future developer rig?
It could be Jarvis the Developer AI Assistant aka DAIA™ of Tony Stark's creation in the recent Iron Man movies. Voice activated commands, holographic interfaces that responds to gestures, audio-visual programming instead of text, etc.

phektus··on Ask HN: How should the idea-person behind a startup be compensated?
You could get her to 'evangelize' with talks and maybe some cold calling/email, if she's up to it. You'll know she'll be passionate about it, since it's her idea and she can explain many bits of it in an intuitive way. On the other hand, she'll be the de-facto marketing person, which should make it easier for you to think of an equity split. She'll then get to contribute actively to the business and you'll both be happier down the road.

phektus··on Ask HN: What's your experience with remote working? as employees/employers?
I'm from the Philippines too (Taguig), and when I was just starting I was paying for 2 connections. Right now I just maintain one (dsl), and during outages and other emergencies I go to cafes with wifi. Generally I try to work on a cafe once a week to minimize the isolation.

phektus··on Ask HN: Should I learn Ruby on Rails or Python?
Uhmmm, ruby on rails is a framework. You should be asking whether to learn Python or Ruby. Why not learn both so you can expand your vocabulary and narrow down once the situation demands it?
phektus··on Ask HN: How run a successful digital marketing campaign, on a shoestring budget.
Try Twitter (create an account for your product and follow people with related interests). Post relevant content and hopefully followers will come by.
phektus··on Tell HN: Unhappy and I don't know what to do.
1. Disable your Facebook account. ASAP.

2. Stop comparing yourself to other people, especially your high school friends. They also have problems, probably just as unhappy as you, and dislike the smell of their farts. To conclude their level of accomplishment based on their wall posts is never going to work for your self-esteem.

3. I don't condone suicide, but a death wish helps put things into perspective.

4. What do you REALLY WANT in life? How do you get there? Imagine getting there (through meditation, writing, whatever), are you really going to be genuinely happy?

5. When you find out what you want, plan your way of getting there. Spoiler: it's not going to be easy, may not be fun at all, but if you are entertaining suicide at this point it would definitely be worthwhile.

6. Next time you go out, stop to smell the flowers.
