phaer··on Spinning Up an Onion Mirror Is Stupid Easy
Very unlikely if you just hosting an onion service with legal content, where all traffic is encrypted.

Having to deal with law enforcement is unlikely even if you run a normal, encrypted, TOR relay.

Exit nodes, on the other hand, will most likely get letters or even visits by law enforcement. But those are not involved at all when just running an onion service.

phaer··on Asciinema CLI 3.0 rewritten in Rust, adds live streaming, upgrades file format
Sounds preferable compared to be woken up at 5 am by your cloud providers billing alert.
phaer··on The Medley Interlisp Project: Reviving a Historical Software System [pdf]
They have an informative website and an online emulator at https://interlisp.org/software/access-online/

You could also just not enable it. It's off by default
phaer··on Atuin – Magical Shell History
I think you might be mixing them up?

Opt-in means that the user needs to actively decide to use the feature, it's OFF by default. That's currently the case for atuin (happy user without sync here).

Opt-out would mean the feature would be ON by default and users would need to actively decide NOT to use it.

phaer··on Breaking Up with On-Call
Had this very same payment scheme as an SRE on call in Europe almost a decade ago.
phaer··on Persistent packages on Steam Deck using Nix
Did you try https://github.com/numtide/nix-gl-host/ to help with nix & opengl drivers on non-nixos distros?
phaer··on Shunpo: Minimalist bash tool to make directory navigation a little bit faster
Just a note that zoxide isn't specific to nushell in any way: I use it with great satisfaction in both zsh and bash!
phaer··on Ink Pen Records Handwriting and Creates Digital Copies
> This process can take a few seconds and up to a few minutes, depending on connectivity

A pen that records everything you write and uploads it to some compute cloud sounds less interesting than the title made it sound :/

phaer··on Soldering the Tek way
> A bigger problem is that you should never use leaded solder to repair boards that have been soldered with lead-free, which means pretty much every board out there that has been manufactured in the last 20-30 years or so.

I am unlikely to every try this, but curious: Why is that, what would happen?

phaer··on Interview of Robert Shingledecker, Tiny Core Linux and DSL Developer (2009)
But "back then", thinking about the late 90ies and early 00ths here, far less people had to use a computer at all. So in absolute numbers there are most probably still more kids with "general tech know-how" today.
phaer··on Swimmable Cities
I suppose it's less safe then a pool, but I don't think there's more current compared to the Danube and there are boats there as well.
phaer··on Swimmable Cities
You can swim there if you want! there's a picture with ppl swimming in Viennas canal (Donaukanal) on the website and there's a whole association around it which claims 300+ members: https://schwimmvereindonaukanal.org/.

That being said, Donauinsel is still quite close to the center and I personally prefer the relative quietness and greenery around there to swimming in the canal.

phaer··on Princeton group open sources "SWE-agent", with 12% fix rate for GitHub issues
But this doesn't read the file char-by-char, but uses buffering to read it into a string
phaer··on Ask HN: Cleanest way to manage Windows OS?
You could use nixos in WSL2 https://nix-community.github.io/NixOS-WSL as you are already comfortable with Nix. It's (mostly) just Linux in a VM nowadays.
phaer··on Spotify will reduce total headcount by approximately 17%

I am also one of those Linux desktop users who bought an M2 for power management and I don't understand how people can be satisfied with the out of the box window management experience. Every other environment supports hyper + arrow to move windows into a split view, windows, gnome, kde, whatever.

Yes, that's the meaning I had intended
phaer··on Millions of smart meters will brick it when 2G and 3G turns off
> But let's say even $500 (it's probably cheaper) for something that lasts 8 years is still much cheaper than sending people to get the readings

Probably true, but only as long as one can continue to externalize the cost of handling the resulting e-waste to future generations or at least current-day taxpayers.

phaer··on Pixel 8 to have seven years of Android updates
Not sure why you would consider the suspected re-sale value of the phone here?

From a users perspective the question would seem to be whether they want to spend $89 for a battery or $890 (maybe minus that re-sale value of 200-300, so still around $600) on a new phone.

phaer··on “Make” as a static site generator (2022)
> (Thankfully full-blown simulation is often an option nowadays too)

Yes, and I think its fair to assume that some backend to execute the x86-64 Linux ABI will out-live most readers.

Projects like https://justine.lol/ape.html, https://guix.gnu.org/manual/en/html_node/Invoking-guix-pack.... or https://github.com/matthewbauer/nix-bundle do make it approachable to "bundle" a lot of software down to libc.

phaer··on We raised a bunch of money
I think fly.io believes that they can allow the bookstore to do so in less than two hours for a price where it's still important enough for the bookstore and profitable - in aggregate - for fly.io.

I personally believe that could be true, but their investors going to find out ;)

NixOS is "better" in the sense that you can get pretty close to something like Silverblue with it if you tinker around.

But I agree with you that for the average user Silverblue surely is the the better platform, NixOS is for people how like to hack around and customize their environment.

phaer··on A SvelteKit template for building CMS-free editable websites
As far as I understand it, the dynamic website you use is the same as served to the client minus the editing parts? Would it also support a scenario where the dynamic part runs on one host, say inside an intranet and users can "publish" to pre-configured static hosts or s3 buckets with a click? Static hosting could be enough for many sites and one could combine the technical and UX advantages of your dynamic interface with the advantages of static sites for security and distribution.

I found that useful when i worked with https://www.getlektor.com/ years ago. In lektor the dynamic part runs on a users desktop machine, but it of course wouldn't need to.

phaer··on Reflect – App for recording and connecting notes, ideas and contacts
> We're end-to-encrypted, which I think this crowd will appreciate.

Yes, we do! Just curios why this doesn't currently include files and images? Some of the most sensitive info in my notes is inside PDF, e.g. contracts.

Not using SSH resident keys myself yet, but you also require key identifiers for your gpg keys on the local machine if you use yubikeys with gpg afaik.
