petrocrat··on ACLU sues Minnesota for police violence against the press
The 1st amendment covers freedom of assembly as well.

> Congress shall make no law... abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Press implies covering events and publishing about them. If that's not convincing enough, they spell it out in right to assemble, anyways. A press corps can assemble to cover events.

petrocrat··on De-Escalation Keeps Protesters and Police Safer
The other officers (excluding the one who was standing) involved should also be arrested.
petrocrat··on The Police Data Accessibility Project
Why must officer names be anonymized? They are public servants and they are obligated to provide name and badge numbers during the course of their duty.

(Anonymizing citizens that were arrested/cited makes sense, of course)

petrocrat··on Simplifier
This is like the Open Source Ecology project but for computing hardware.
petrocrat··on Reddit rolls out community currencies on Ethereum
Are there any schemes where it costs some tiny amount of eth/gas/whateverCoin to post content?

Theoretically that should decrease spam and increase high effort posts, but I could see it also reducing open source style contribution and increasing advertising masquerading as content. This is a hard problem to solve.

petrocrat··on US unprepared for an electrical grid collapse, but it costs only $300M
Transformers are usually housed in metal boxes. Any wires inside metal sheeting of whatever geometry would be protected because any current induced would be induced in the metal container which dissipates the power of the pulse. To learn more read about Faraday cages.
petrocrat··on Stocks Are Recovering While the Economy Collapses
> it's every major nation

No, Countries in Europe are providing fiscally sourced replacement to wages/salaries. For example Denmark is paying 80% of an employees salary if the company does not lay them off. This is a drastically different intervention than what the US is doing.

Maybe Cypher from Neo4j?

petrocrat··on 'Expert Twitter' Only Goes So Far – Bring Back Blogs
At least for programming content, I think dev.to has replaced medium and is doing a fantastic job so far.
petrocrat··on Ask HN: What scientific phenomenon do you wish someone would explain better?
Another useful topic to understand that's related to this: Hamiltonian Mechanics (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamiltonian_mechanics), which is a whole other way to express what Newton described with his physics, but in pure energetic terms.

Entropy is usually poorly taught, there's really three entropies that get convoluted. The statistical mechanics entropy, which is the math to describe random distribution of ideal particles. There's Shannon's entropy, which is for describing randomness in strings of characters. And there's classical entropy, which is to describe the fraction of irreversible/unrecoverable losses to heat as a system transfers potential energy to other kinds of energy on its way towards equilibrium with its surroundings or the "dead state" (which is a reference state of absolute entropy).

These are all named with the same word, and while they have some relation with each other, they are each different enough that there should be unique names for all three, IMO.

petrocrat··on Facebook says it has removed promotion of anti-quarantine events
That assumption is incorrect for sovereign currencies issuers (like the US, UK, Japan). They would just issue bonds, which is not at all like you or I taking out a loan.
petrocrat··on For 11 Years, the Soviet Union Had No Weekends (2018)
I don't see that many pushing for communism.

Now, a lot are pushing for universal healthcare and similar social safety-net programs. Confusing these two things is a hallmark of either a propogandist or one of their rubes.

petrocrat··on Clues to Covid-19 coronavirus’s vulnerability emerge from antibody against SARS
natural selection applies to any self-replicating things... viruses are considered non-living, but they are still self-replicating.

(technically, the self-replication need also admit mutations into the replication process for natural selection to apply. viruses do mutate so, they qualify)

petrocrat··on Ask HN: Book recommendations for understanding financial systems?
reddit.com/r/mmt_economics

Not a book, I know but there are a lot of articles and resources in the sidebar, including a list of academic papers on the inner workings of money/monetary systems. Search for "MMT Foundations" within that subreddit to find those.

petrocrat··on Minsky moment
Minksy also "identified three types of borrowers that contribute to the accumulation of insolvent debt: hedge borrowers, speculative borrowers, and Ponzi borrowers." -https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyman_Minsky#Minsky's_financia...

As the amount of the third type, the ponzi borrowers, grows it is more and more indicative of an impending Minsky Moment.

petrocrat··on Amazon can’t end fake reviews, but its new system might drown them out
Upwork, fiverr, freelancer also have jobs posted which are for fake reviews, even though the job description is cleverly disguised as a a blog post or some other innocent thing.
petrocrat··on Ask HN: What has your work taught you that other people don't realize?
It actually extends to the entire economy: The public sector debt is exactly equal to the private sector savings, because they are literally the same entity. Check out MMT Economics for the balance sheet math that demonstrates this.
petrocrat··on Products I Wish Existed
What if it automatically populated the list of your "close friends" by some algorithm that ranks your overall interaction with them. So you can't arbitrarily add or remove the friends. You could "game" it but only by actually interacting with the person. If they include sentiment analysis on the interactions, then you couldn't "game" it by spamming or being a cyber bully either. You'd actually have to be friendly towards that person.
petrocrat··on Climate change now detectable from any single day of weather at global scale
It's fine to ignore those parts as long as you still vote and advocate for increased funding to renewable & no-carbon energy deployment and reduced tax incentives for legacy fuel generation (i.e. the depletion allowance, which is solely afforded to fossil fuel extractors).
petrocrat··on Neo.mjs – Webworker-driven UI framework
I really like react, but I see the appeal of the .vue files in the vue framework. I think there are perhaps more people than you think who don't like how CSS integrates with react (CSS-in-JS) and prefer having the single file component, with super easy style scoping and with easy traditional css syntax highlighting support in a .vue file
petrocrat··on America has no use for hides, so leather prices plunge
The argument for omnivorianism that I find unassailable is that plowing which is required for annuals is actually worse for the environment than ruminant emissions. While utilizing perenials will require ruminants for a truly holistic agriculture that cycles all nutrients efficiently. So a Perennial plant base agriculture with ruminants to hlelp cycle nutrients is the best ag option available, so eating a few a of the ruminants as they age out of the cohort makes sense, and would be wasteful not to do so.
petrocrat··on French economist scours spreadsheets to find secret offshore accounts
The alternative is protecting and even strengthening estate taxes and perhaps something like Bernie Sanders' wall street high frequency transaction tax idea.
petrocrat··on French economist scours spreadsheets to find secret offshore accounts
Article 1, Section 9 prohibits direct taxes (which a wealth tax would definitely be) unless apportioned by state population. So it is unconstitutional unless every state agrees on an apportionment arrangement, which is nigh impossible as low population states will not receive much of the benefit.
