petrilli··on Facebook is testing Timeline layout with single column of posts
Isn't that called a blog?
petrilli··on How much does it cost to be an audiophile?
I would disagree with the initial premise that it's about the pursuit of "perfect sound reproduction". There's many people who do that, but that's not what the audiophile world really has become. It's about a bunch of hand waving and big checkbook spending to impress other audiophiles. Oddly, that describes a lot of "hobbies".

Nobody who feels that a $4,000 power cable is important has any semblance of sanity remaining. It's the homeopathy of consumer electronics.

petrilli··on CEO to workers: you'll likely be fired if Obama wins
You should watch the film (Queen of Versailles). It's clear that 1) he's completely devoid of a soul; 2) he exploited the cheap money thing knowingly to build his business on subprime loans and didn't care who got hurt in the process (see #1). He's the perfect modern Republican. His wife comes off much more compassionately, and quite honestly, smarter, if likely insecure and troubled.
petrilli··on Apple removes 'Web Sharing' from Mountain Lion Disappoints Web Developers
I don't know anyone who uses it, so I'm just not sure how this is a disappointment to anyone. Seems like trying to make a big deal out of Apple removing something nobody used. Also Apache is still installed on the machine, so you can run it if you want. It's just not push button.
petrilli··on FunnyJunk's lawyer isn't afraid of the Oatmeal
I really like the "I'm sure I can find SOMETHING to throw at him". Also, isn't he basically engaging in slander by accusing Matthew of orchestrating these attacks? Everything I've seen the only thing he orchestrated was charity.
petrilli··on Why Apple Is Afraid Of Bitcoin
I seriously doubt that any executive at Apple has given 5 minutes thought to Bitcoin.
petrilli··on In 50 years, Steve Jobs will be forgotten, Gladwell says
How many years before we can forget Gladwell?
petrilli··on Backdoor found in a China-made US military chip
There is a reason that the NSA partnered with IBM to build the Trusted Foundry program. http://www.nsa.gov/business/programs/tapo.shtml
petrilli··on Reaching the Limits of Adobe Stupidity
One can only approach the limits of Adobe's stupidity, not actually reach it.
petrilli··on TSA agents forced crying 4-year-old to undergo pat-down after hug
You are presuming that the TSA will ever reveal what "standard procedures" are. They're whatever justifies their current behavior, but you can't know, you dirty hippie, because that's national security.
petrilli··on Cisco memo: We can’t build anything
This isn't new. Cisco hasn't really had a lot of success with their own products, but has had a lot of success buying other companies and re-labling them into the Cisco ecosystem. I've been a customer of some of those companies and it's always a bumpy, but also amusing ride.

The first one I remember them buying was Crescendo, who made some of the better FDDI gear at the time. Cisco bought them around 1993 because their own gear was worthless. You can see a list of all the companies they've bought here: http://www.cisco.com/web/about/doing_business/corporate_deve...

petrilli··on IPad Vision in 1994? For visionary Roger Fidler, a lot of what-ifs
So, we'll just ignore the Dynabook in 1968 that precedes them all? Having an idea is about 0.001% of "invention". The rest is all the "little details".
petrilli··on Sprint Omits iPhone Cost From Bonus Calculus
How do they make money? Volume! http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/first-citywide-...
petrilli··on Memory modules from Apple.com are 10x market price...why?
This is why you buy from Other World Computing http://www.macsales.com/ Awesome support. No, I don't work there, I just have been buying upgrades for many many many years there, including a new SSD yesterday.
petrilli··on Sony Ericsson CEO: We Should Have Taken The iPhone More Seriously

petrilli··on Category Theory for Dummies [pdf]
This is a heretofore unknown definition of "dummies".
petrilli··on Federal courts make it more expensive to access records (PACER update)
Only when it assists in denying the public visibility into the operation of the government do things in the tech world get MORE expensive over time.
petrilli··on Arq 2 (OS X backup-to-S3 software) has been released.
As with AWS, it's a gamble as to whether it will be there when you need it. I'm always nervous of all-you-can-eat plans. All it takes is a small estimate mistake to blow an entire business plan.

N.B. I've been using Arq since it first came out, and love it 100%. I do not, however, backup my music/video with it. That goes on a removable 2TB safe in a fire safe.

petrilli··on Google Catalogs
Finally, our long nightmare of not being tracked when looking at paper catalogs is over.
petrilli··on Among the costs of war: $20 Billion in Air Conditioning

petrilli··on [dead]
Huzzah. About time. Now can we stop pretending that the Full Faith and Credit clause of the Constitution doesn't apply to marriage?
petrilli··on Storm - the Hadoop of realtime processing

petrilli··on [dead]

petrilli··on Why I, Jeff Bezos, Keep Spending Billions On Amazon R&D
I get the feeling that you're both right and wrong. Right in that a lot of the legacy Amazon code is probably burdened with huge technical debt. I also get the feeling they're pushing the boundaries in other areas. A bit of the "chase the shiny coin" syndrome.

One of the issues is that none of us really know what goes on inside Amazon. They are notoriously secretive about most everything.

petrilli··on Cloud Storage Isn’t Cheap: Price of the Cloud Compared to Traditional Storage
The difficulty sometimes in comparing is, as this post points out, people don't include all the "other" costs that often dwarf the hardware costs. Power, cooling, bandwidth, etc., all cost money, and when you're not buying a lot of them, they cost a LOT of money. The cost of equipment is usually a fraction of the TCO.
petrilli··on China's Tencent Trumps Apple in Businessweek's Tech-Growth Ranking
The smaller the company, the easier it is to grow faster. Apple is 50x larger, if not more.
petrilli··on Ubuntu 10.10 vs. Mac OS X 10.6.5: A Competitive Race
And yet, none of this has any direct correlation with productivity.
petrilli··on Main GNU source repository server compromised
Actually, no... you have to be pretty ignorant to be subject to them. Use bind variables in your queries and you are done. That it's still one of the top 2-3 exploits tells you how horrible most developers really are.
petrilli··on Why we switched from Google App Engine to EC2
The thing people "forget" is that the further up the stack you move, the more support is required because there's less and less the customer can do to diagnose a problem.
petrilli··on Android Market and Taxes
Do people selling in Apple's app store have to do this kind of manual work?
