Only a score of 8.8?
petra303··on The death of San Francisco's Market Street
Same thing happened in downtown Denver’s 16th street mall. But they didn’t reduce parking or restrict car travel like in the article. But the same result occurred. Stores have set empty for years and more are closing every week.
petra303··on Degrees of Wealth
Can’t view without completing a captcha?
petra303··on Over 400 Linux CVEs published in the last 24 hours alone
In my company, the security team isn’t technical. They see CVE, find a vulnerable system, it gets flagged. We have to patch it.

We patched for a CVE last week that a malicious usb sound card device could be use the gain root.

On a Vm? Is that something we really need to worry about??

petra303··on Starring the Computer
I feel like the movie Hackers should have more entries.

Turn on auto-renew and attach a CC?
petra303··on Distributing Mac software is increasing my cortisol levels
> I can use SmartID to verify my ID (and age) in about 20 seconds when buying an energy drink at the local grocery store

Where do you have to show ID for that??

Ricochet was a mesh internet provider.
petra303··on Ti-84 Evo
It doesn’t have a qwerty keyboard. That would be such a pain to type on.

For some reason qwerty keyboard calculators are banned in tests.

petra303··on Update on the eBay Scam
This is the reason I stopped selling on eBay. Zero protection for the seller.
petra303··on An old photo of a large BBS (2022)
More likely coax. 3com 509c network cards. Much less infrastructure to have a lan that way.

IBM had a network that ran over phone cords that were daisycbained from one node to the next.

petra303··on Danish postal service to stop delivering letters
Which makes taking the time to send a letter have a lot of importance. I wrote a note to my mother and it meant a lot to her to get a hand written correspondence.
petra303··on Are Apple gift cards safe to redeem?
So never buy a gift card at a retail location, unless it’s digital. Preferably buy directly from the website of the company where th credit will be used.

But why would apple punish the secondary user of the card? That seems like the wrong person to punish.

petra303··on Bring Back the Blue-Book Exam
I doubt they’re talking about entry level maths.
petra303··on Nobody’s buying homes, nobody’s switching jobs, America’s mobility is stalling
Why get out of a 3-4% loan just to get into a 7-8% loan?
petra303··on Why does a fire truck cost $2m
I would think it’s more about economy of scale. If you tried to build a car without any of the standard parts being available, it would be expensive.
petra303··on Binary Wordle
Yea, you don’t need more than two chances.
petra303··on Self-Driving Teslas Are Fatally Rear-Ending Motorcyclists More Than Any Other
Lane filtering solves this fear. Should be legal nation wide.
petra303··on Why Not Bluesky
If Reddit has taught me anything it’s that the huge number of new subscribers is probably a large amount of bot owner accounts trying to make accounts to age for later use. They just like to say “x million accounts created” with no due diligence behind the accounts.
petra303··on Amazon ordered a return to the office – but research says they'll backtrack
I leave my computer at my desk. Anyone contacting me gets the reply of “i don’t have my computer, I will look at it in the Morning”. When I worked from home I had no problem jumping on a call for 10 mins after hours.
petra303··on Wells Fargo employee found dead at desk after 4 days
I can see my employer now. “See, this is why we have short wall cubes! So we can find your body quicker!”
petra303··on CA bill to require all new cars to prevent them from going 10mph over speedlimit
I drove a moving van once between to major cities. It was governed not to go over 65. On some two lane roads I would run come upon a slower moving vehicle. If I tried to pass the governor would kick in and make it really dangerous to pass safely. I would have to sit behind the car for a long time going 50 in a 65 before there was a huge gap in oncoming traffic to be able to pass.
petra303··on Maybe Google Is Popular Because It's Good?
Mind blown. No more copy paste for me!
petra303··on TSA officers accused of stealing from passengers
That’s carry on luggage, not checked luggage.
