peterkshultz··on UK votes to leave EU
I had been following the likelihood of a Brexit on Bloomberg. Before polls opened today, they said there was a 25% chance of the UK leaving. Seems they were quite, quite wrong.

peterkshultz··on Can Google or Facebook ever have a true competitor?
This is a fundamental aspect of introductory economics.

In fact, many professors use Facebook as an example of monopolies due to the network effect.

peterkshultz··on College Unaffordable Even in Higher Income Brackets
A big proponent of the type of things you're talking about is Mike Rowe.

He created a foundation "that rewards people with a passion to get trained for skilled jobs that actually exist": http://profoundlydisconnected.com/foundation/

peterkshultz··on Tell HN: We built a solar-charging wireless backup camera for your car
Should a fender bender occur, I'd imagine insurance wouldn't cover getting this replaced.

A native backup camera is seemingly more cost-effective.

peterkshultz··on I do not use a debugger
When first learning to program, my teacher refused to allow us to use the debugger. He believed it corrupted our abilities to truly understand the code that we wrote.

Although I now use a debugger, I can't help but feel improper for having abandoned his rule. While a debugger provides for an easier programming experience, there is something to be said for personally combing through every line of code to find a bug.

I agree with you. The latest "nightly" log was taken in January 2015.

peterkshultz··on The limited value of a computer science education
The students you really want working for you are those who went through the rigor of a theoretical CS curriculum while also indulging a more practical skill set. Such a skill set can be honed at hackathons, for example.

It mustn't be forgotten that a theoretical curriculum teaches discipline to learn just about anything--if you can learn complexity theory and algorithmic proofs, chances are you can learn to create a CRUD API.

peterkshultz··on When everything else fails, amateur radio will still be there and thriving
My father introduced me to amateur radio at a young age. I got my license as a teenager.

I play with a mode of communication called Earth-Moon-Earth, or EME. The idea is to bounce signals off the moon and have them get picked up by a pre-arranged partner back on Earth. It feels cutting-edge.

Were more people exposed to such off-the-wall applications of ham radio, I think there'd be a resurgence in the hobby.

peterkshultz··on When everything else fails, amateur radio will still be there and thriving
It helps that hams must learn FCC rules and regulations in order to become licensed.
peterkshultz··on When everything else fails, amateur radio will still be there and thriving
I'm on the board of the amateur radio club at my university. It's incredibly difficult to attract students to the club. I think it's less a problem of an age gap and more a problem of the opportunity cost from tinkering with transceivers and not, say, strongly typed programming languages.
peterkshultz··on Microsoft to acquire LinkedIn for $26B
Even more than that when considering the opportunity cost of not putting $26B into a stable investment vehicle.
peterkshultz··on Ask HN: What is your job role and what are the side projects you are working on?
Do you have links to either? I'd love to contribute!
peterkshultz··on Microsoft to acquire LinkedIn for $26B
How? What would they do with a contact address list that would be so profitable?
peterkshultz··on Singularity Is Near Full Documentary Michio Kaku – Ray Kurzweil

peterkshultz··on Morgan Stanley to Rate Employees with Adjectives, Not Numbers
There was similar news out of Goldman Sachs last week, which fueled a meaningful conversation on HN: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11781887
peterkshultz··on Oil Traders May Be the Only Ones Who Want Yahoo to Survive
If Yahoo goes under, perhaps they can open-source pieces of their product line.
peterkshultz··on Oil Traders May Be the Only Ones Who Want Yahoo to Survive
Too expensive. A Bloomberg terminal starts at $24,000.

Not using a free IM service like Yahoo's seems like a fiduciary sin.

peterkshultz··on Bill Gates talks about why artificial intelligence is nearly here
Yes, Keynes thought increased productivity would allow workers more free time--namely, to pursue leisurely activities.

Little did he realize workers would just channel that free time right back into their work.

peterkshultz··on Head of StartUp NY leaving as jobs report is two months late
In Nevada, Tesla projected more than 700 jobs by the end of 2015.

The state got 272.

peterkshultz··on Jeff Bezos Defends Decision to Buy Washington Post
No reports that I know of, no. Trump threw the accusation, however:

"Trump...accused Mr. Bezos of dodging corporate taxes and abusing his position as owner of The Post to launch personal attacks and to keep lawmakers from scrutinizing Amazon"

peterkshultz··on Music World Bands Together Against YouTube, Seeking Change to Law
I opened the article expecting the music industry to have caught wind of youtube-dl.

I was wrong.

peterkshultz··on The Mall Lives

peterkshultz··on Goldman Sachs Dumps Numerical-Ranking System for Employees
Goldman and other investment banks are having a tough time recruiting top university graduates--the pull of tech companies is getting too great.

I'd imagine this is a way for Goldman to try and differentiate themselves from other banking firms in the fight for new hires.

peterkshultz··on The Bank Robber
60 Minutes covered this same story:

peterkshultz··on Microsoft kills what's left of the old Nokia
It's not a passive act: companies make decisions. As a collective market, consumers determine if that decision is good or bad.

Blackberry, PanAm, and other companies simply made bad decisions as compared to their competitors.

peterkshultz··on Do Police Body Cameras Really Work?
There's an interactive piece from the New York Times that discusses this same idea:
