peter422··on Spiraling in San Francisco’s Doom Loop
So currently 9% of the city budget is spent on police and you are suggesting we increase that to 40%?

That is a better solution than building more housing?

A community is a social construct, you have to keep a lot of things in balance for it to work properly. The most important part is giving people a roof over their heads. Overpaying for police (or teachers, or nurses, etc) isn't going to save the day. It's the same reason you can't buy your way out of the homelessness problem!

peter422··on Spiraling in San Francisco’s Doom Loop
The starting salary for an SF police officer is over 100k. At some point money isn't the only issue.

Also like any other job, the best way to get good police officers is to have lots of competition. If you are desperate for staffing, you aren't getting the best.

peter422··on Spiraling in San Francisco’s Doom Loop
Who is going to strictly enforce all the laws? The excess police officers that can't be hired because they can't afford to live in the city and don't want to commute into a city they don't care about to make less money than other nearby communities will pay them? Fewer than 25% of SF cops live in SF.

It all comes back to housing. If you have a desirable place, people want to live there, and at some point if you don't keep up with growth then your city starts to lose the really important people that kept it running (nurses, teachers, police officers, etc).

It's not like SF almost kept up with growth... They didn't try and fell so far behind in a deliberate attempt to keep a status quo, which completely led to the current disaster.

peter422··on Spiraling in San Francisco’s Doom Loop
SF's biggest problem is lack of housing, and SF's housing policies are among the most "conservative" (ie all about keeping the status quo) in the nation.

A lot of "progressive" policies that people are worried about have little actual impact, especially when the price of housing is completely ridiculous and creates so many problems on its own.

peter422··on Waymo One doubles service area in Phoenix, continues growing in SF
The comment is saying these cars will improve pedestrian/cyclist safety.

I can also attest to it. I've interacted as a pedestrian and cyclist to many cruise and waymo cars and they've been very, very cautious and careful.

Just for reference, this was all publicly known at the time because the information was all disclosured on her forms. The daily wire didn't think it was a big deal back then because they didn't bring it up.

The issues that people are having with judges like Clarence Thomas are him earning large sums of money from potentially interested parties of the court without disclosing those earnings.

peter422··on Wearing an eye mask during sleep improves episodic learning and alertness
I'm a big big fan of the lunya eye mask: https://lunya.co/products/womens-washable-silk-sleep-mask-me...

I used a little bit of sewing to tighten up the fit exactly to my head and it never falls off and is incredibly comfortable.

No sound though.

peter422··on JPMorgan Chase Bank Assumes All the Deposits of First Republic Bank
It is also amazing that is you look at the deposit numbers, almost none of the FDIC protected money moved, whereas almost all of the non-FDIC money went elsewhere.

Maybe they erred in allowing all that FDIC uninsured money, but somebody would have to!

peter422··on JPMorgan Chase Bank Assumes All the Deposits of First Republic Bank
Every loan banks give out now helps their balance sheet since interest rates are higher. Don't think they'll stop.
peter422··on JPMorgan Chase Bank Assumes All the Deposits of First Republic Bank
No bank in existence could handle losing 40% of their deposits in a few days. You can't possibly protect against that while also operating the business of being a bank as we think of it.
peter422··on New York to ban natural gas, including stoves, in new buildings
Californians actually pay lower overall taxes compared to other states due to low property taxes.

Also, my power in San Francisco has probably been out for no more than 6 hours over the last 10 years. I don't know how many 9s that is, but it's more than 1.

peter422··on U.S. regulator set to take over First Republic
And you can sell otherwise non-revenue generating assets if you need to.

If you want to say it's difficult to tax illiquid assets, that's fine. But it's not impossible and while it would just change people's relationships to these types of assets (maybe in a good way for society), it's not going to be the end of the world.

peter422··on Fire Mark Zuckerberg
I was about to respond that there is no way the class B stock could be passed down to an heir with 10x voting rights attached, but after reading the documentation it does. So his family could run it into the ground at their leisure! Though Mark would have the ability to convert it from class B to class A when passing the stock down if he wanted.

It’s an upscale building but I wouldn’t call it an upscale neighborhood, especially at night. It’s only a couple blocks from the bay bridge overpass and the overpass attracted some non-upscale activity.

At the same time though I’ve spent many late nights in the area and never had any negative encounters.

peter422··on 60M Americans have taxes so simple the IRS could do them automatically
So you are saying that in the majority of these cases the fraud is intentional and not accidental?

The point being the IRS can completely solve accidental mistakes but just telling everybody what they owe instead of forcing them to calculate it themselves.

peter422··on Tesla ordered to pay more than $3M to former worker in racism suit
I'm guessing you are not familiar with the case and only read the CNN coverage.

Employers have responsibilities to maintain certain standards at a workplace. Tesla absolutely flaunted those standards to a ridiculous degree. The first jury on the case awarded over $100 million to the plaintiff.

Go look at the evidence presented in the trial. It's not one bad word being used once.

peter422··on Tesla ordered to pay more than $3M to former worker in racism suit
You can't even type the word and yet you think it's fine for somebody to be called that at a workplace?

A number of existing EVs or plug-in hybrids would easily meet your needs. Toyota RAV4 prime for instance.

peter422··on Yellen says government will help SVB depositors but rules out bailout
... that's what banks do, they just do it at scale. So you want every person to be their own bank?

Why not just let the FDIC do their job, trust in the banking system and save yourself the trouble of worrying about a bank run.

peter422··on Yellen says government will help SVB depositors but rules out bailout
Great now every startup and every business needs to hire a CFO because a bank can't be trusted to store any number higher than $250k?

So if my nascent 5-person startup raises 1.2M your suggestion is I need to hire a CFO? That's going to help innovation?

peter422··on Yellen says government will help SVB depositors but rules out bailout
What bank do you use?

When was the last time you went over their deposit base and asset allocation?

peter422··on There have been 562 bank failures since 2000
Yes they don't have a shortfall as long as there wasn't a bank run and they'd have time to unwind their long term bonds.

But they don't have time and did have a bank run, and therefore they do have a shortfall.

I think you might be able to argue that the bank itself had enough intrinsic value beyond it's ledger which could make up the shortfall, but that's all in the eye of the beholder who might want to buy them. We'll really see whether this is the case or not based on whether they have a new owner on Monday or they don't.

peter422··on OpenAI bought the domain ai.com for $11M
The cap goes down as the company gets bigger and bigger, I doubt Microsoft is at the 100x number.

But regardless of what exactly the cap is, it creates an incentive for the company to operate as close to 0 profit as possible because there is much less incentive for excess profit… they don’t get to keep it. But they do get to keep anything that is a reasonable business expense.

peter422··on OpenAI bought the domain ai.com for $11M
One aspect of a profit capped company is that as they start to make more and more revenue (and profit) they’ll be heavily incentivized to just invest it all back into employees or datacenters or 8 figure domain names since the for company can’t keep the extra profit anyways.

For all the hate Google gets, it's crawlers are like 10x smarter than any other search engine. Wouldn't surprise me at all if there was some type of crawling issue that Google figured out and Bing didn't.

This is a case where I'm not ready to attribute to malice what is very likely incompetence.

Stock market is not guaranteed to gain 7% over the next 20 years, but you can effectively guarantee your electricity usage is probably going to stay the same or go up and can somewhat guarantee the performance of the panels (given the warranties).

It also is a useful form of diversification. If you only had $15k, it might not be the best overall investment, but if you have more money than that lying around it probably isn't a bad place to invest some of your money assuming you plan on using lots of electricity over the next 20 years. At some point having all your money in the stock market isn't the best money allocation either.

peter422··on PagerDuty CEO Quotes Martin Luther King Jr. In Worst Layoff Email Ever
Imagine if another CEO took all the proceeds from the Alibaba stock and blew it trying to make a dying company relevant again. That would have been much, much worse.

Also the value of the company is the stock. She didn't tank it, it went up.
