petecox··on Marzipan: Porting iOS Apps to the Mac
I'm posting using a wireless mouse and USB keyboard from my Android desktop, a 4K tv box.

Android does support mouse input; Apple can at any time release a typecover for iPad with a trackpad. They choose not to.

petecox··on Leaving Apple and Google: /e/ first beta
A naming that encodes its own pronunciation is genius.

'Linux' was non obvious to the point that Linus issued his own voice recording. 'gif' vs 'jif' for the image format, etc.

petecox··on Leaving Apple and Google: /e/ first beta
I wouldn't call it a hard fork, more a downstream derivative. In a similar way, Ubuntu rebases itself on debian unstable every 6 months or so.

That is to say Duval based his product on whichever LineageOS release was 'current' at the time but plans to sync to the next available release when his next development cycle allows (which is Oreo, currently).

petecox··on Leaving Apple and Google: /e/ first beta
Sounds like Halium with a dose of Anbox.
petecox··on Leaving Apple and Google: /e/ first beta
> /e/ is not obviously pronounceable

On the contrary, it's a scientific notation for a specific pronunciation of the letter e.

/e/ represents in linguistics an unrounded closed-mid front vowel.

petecox··on Progress update from the Librem 5 hardware department
The software needs some sort of vendor polish. Let's not repeat the mistake of OpenMoko, where its utility as a basic phone had its problems, thrown over the wall for the community to fix.

In this way, Apple can manufacture 4G and wifi-only iPads by omitting this component on the latter.
petecox··on Arm Announces Client CPU Roadmap For Laptops
I am typing this on a 3GB amlogic s912 streaming box, with ports for USB type A, ethernet and 4K HDMI. Performance for around $40 is what you would expect from a smartphone, albeit the quirks of Android with a mouse and/or tv remote.

The modding scene might not have the same level of polish as a rpi - there are ROMs for Android/Armbian/CoreElec but you may be at the mercy of building it yourself, e.g. When the wifi module isnt precompiled for your particular no name OEM device.

petecox··on Librem 5 general development report
Consistency across products - their PureOS runs Gnome.

c.f. Canonical running Unity on desktop and phone.

petecox··on Show HN: Compare benefits of second passport based on the one you have
The blue SJ territory between Greenland and Russia is Svalbard, part of Norway. (not a bug in the map!)

It's not part of the Schengen zone, so will allow people to enter visa free but presumably you need visitor rights to the country you're coming from (compare Andorra).

petecox··on European Commission fines Google €4.34B in Android antitrust case
Jolla have a collaboration with Sony to get Sailfish OS running on their Xperia phones.

However, Sailfish is available only as a post market firmware.

Being a derivative work of AOSP courtesy of libhybris, it would seem Sony are prevented from factory installing Sailfish on any future Xperia device.

The apps are typically installed to a read-only System partition.

With 'root' access, it's possible to remove them via a superuser app or adb - or it used to be the case.

Steady on, it's mentioned in the article.

Wrong decade. They had the eMate 300 back in 1997.

But Jobs wasn't interested in stylus-based laptops.

Wasn't that the idea behind Transmeta - to JIT x86 operations in response to runtime feedback?
petecox··on A New Accent Is Developing in Southwest Kansas
According to a youtube video on the subject, Latin-ecks.
petecox··on A New Accent Is Developing in Southwest Kansas
Yes, I noticed the sounds in hat and hand still weren't identical but perhaps she's exaggerating an 'RP-like' sound to emphasize the distinction with general nasalized American English.
petecox··on Messi Walks Better Than Most Players Run
It can hardly be an Americanism when it's used in other countries.

As a Melburnian I take a passing interest every 4 years in the 'Socceroos' but we have our own code that dates back to the 1850s, with influences from the indigenous game of "Marngrook". Footy is footy, soccer is soccer and we find labels such as the 'world game' or 'beautiful game' rather quaint.

Be aware that your language prescriptivism can be seen as a form of cultural imperialism.

Some years ago there was a product recall and class action here in Australia concerning one of the soy milk brands, with unusually high concentration of iodine.

> But it is ugly

Isn't that just the case?

Intel sell the NUC in a couple of variants, the "kit", with an 'ugly' case or the "board".

With the latter they could design a beautiful Apple-looking case around it.

petecox··on Intel to Release Discrete Graphics Card in 2020
Call me a conspiracist but Intel strategically are roadmapping an exit of the IGP market? Perhaps a new focus on high performance OpenCL computing, if the returns on low-power IGP are diminished, viz:

(1) The Vega partnership with AMD (2) thunderbolt eGPUs (3) Apple PowerVR-less in A1x chips (4) Adreno on budget Win 10 devices.

Headless desktop motherboards, with Intel Inside laptops and NUCs utilizing Vega graphics would be my prediction.

petecox··on Ask HN: How do you meet new people?
Education is actually a good way.

Get 20 people in a room doing a 10 week Wednesday night Swedish class and discover over a beer afterwards that one or more of your classmates has a common interest.

petecox··on Asus replaced the touchpad on its new ZenBook Pro with a 5.5-inch touchscreen
This could be useful for app development. A 1080 landscape device on the keyboard, mirrored at 4X on screen.

(Although the digits used are different. When in landscape, my fingers cradle a phone at a 45-60 degree angle with both thumbs used for input. On a horizontal touchpad the index finger(s) are doing much of the input)

petecox··on Anthony Bourdain has died
Thanks for the memories, Tony.

No Reservations was great TV - travelling to exotic destinations, hanging out with chefs and sampling all kinds of street food good and bad. He made the cooking/travel genre fun.

petecox··on Passé présomptif: on Vercingetorix
Both senses of 'to know' from Latin's cognoscere and sapere similarly flow through to other Romance languages including Portuguese (conhecer/saber) Italian (conoscere/sapere) and Spanish (conocer/saber).
petecox··on Light Phone 2: A simple 4G phone with e-ink
It's the same Qualcomm chip as in smartwatches. Unlike a watch, calls will drain the battery.

> you can leave behind your smartphone more often... or for good

If I were spending $US300 on a phone, it ought to be my daily driver.

So I would assume this is for people who, if they do want to access social media on iOS/Android then they do it from the comfort of a large screen device such as a wifi-only iPad, tethering to their 4G dumbphone.

Oh and there's nothing preventing an e-ink device from using a cloud addressbook.

petecox··on Light Phone 2: A simple 4G phone with e-ink
Longevity.

I live in a country where they have shut off the 2G network. 3G may well suffer the same fate within a few years, as carriers migrate to 5G.
