petargyurov··on Pixel 4a battery update due to overheating risk, per Australian 'recall' notice
Yup, currently charging my one for the 3rd time today (thank god I work from home). I am annoyed because that phone still had years left in it.

Thinking of getting the Nothing 3a when it's released here in the next couple of days.

petargyurov··on Umami is a simple, fast, privacy-focused alternative to Google Analytics
I like umami. What stood out to me is their customer support. I had some sort of issue where my free limit was always maxed out. They responded and resolved it very quickly. As a free-tier user I expected to wait days/weeks.

Would recommend.

petargyurov··on Anyone can push updates to the doge.gov website
Move fast and break things, government edition.
petargyurov··on Is creating a Django backed reactjs (like nextjs but use django) a bad idea?
I personally don't find NextJS appealing at all. It's so over the top, felt like it was adding complexity for the sake of it. Maybe it's a "skill issue".

Ultimately this all boils down to 2 things:

* your/your team's proficiency in the tech

* using the right tool for the job

I am not sure if you're trying to replicate some specific NextJS feature or if you're just asking what tech to use for your backend? If it's the latter, Django/Flask/FastAPI will do just fine. More than fine. It's boring, but it works.

My go to would be a simple REST API backend + ReactJS on the frontend. If you want to start mixing server side generation then there is a way forward but it depends on the nature of your app.

Start simple. Keep it boring.

petargyurov··on Jeep Introduces Pop-Up Ads That Appear Every Time You Stop
Is Jeep's reputation the same in Europe?

I've been thinking of making a "sentiment database" for car brands where users share their personal, subjective view of a car make/model. I'm sure something like this probably already exists.

Nice, what was the motivation?

The Amazon made my poor unplugged M1 stutter.

> The backend is a Python thread running on an old Lenovo Thinkcentre in my closet

I love that, however, RIP in advance ;)

petargyurov··on Ask HN: Websites / Apps that aren't a waste of time?
> aren't a waste of time

> spaces on the internet to scroll

These 2 are mutually exclusive ;)

petargyurov··on Ask HN: Want to keep my software engineering skills sharp
If you write a lot of "quick scripts", you might be writing a lot of the same boilerplate code over and over again. If that's the case, creating a framework/library that does X/Y/Z (related to your job) might help.
petargyurov··on How to delete your Facebook account
Not sure what anyone here gains from a reductive comment like this. In case it wasn't clear, obviously that's not what I'm saying -- I was curious why you'd be OK with a reduction in fact checking when the platform is a means to such despicable acts.
petargyurov··on How to delete your Facebook account
This is a very myopic take on things.

> dictate truth

What about the damage done by the millions of lies that people post on the platform to spread their bigoted agendas? What about how these platforms' algorithms ostensibly promote hatred and shocking material?

Just look at the Rohingya massacre [0] and tell me you're OK with it.

I haven't tried any of them, sorry.
petargyurov··on Bye-bye Windows gaming? SteamOS officially expands past the Steam Deck
> shitty location (Spain)

Eh? As in, proximity to the streaming server?

Otherwise, fiber is prolific in Spain (in major cities at least, to the best of my knowledge). I get 500Mbps down here in Valencia (for just €15 too!)

petargyurov··on Ask HN: What are some (weird) ways you're using ChatGPT?
Not that weird but I use it as a translator and to learn Spanish. It's better than Google Translate because I can specify the region (i.e: Spain vs Latin America) and the formality. I can also experiment with more colloquial phrases and idioms that don't have a direct translation, e.g: "It's raining cats and dogs"

It can be useful in explaining grammar and fixing mistakes, though it can sometimes falter.

I tend to double check some things against other translators if it's something important of if the output looks fishy.

Hey! To be honest, I am not sure my feedback would be very valuable. I'm probably your worst type of user -- perma free plan -- simply because I'd only use your tool sporadically. I don't do literature reviews that often, but often enough to think about using a tool like this I suppose.

I totally get it though, it's a difficult thing to balance. If I was doing lit review and deep research daily 6.99 is an amazing deal.

petargyurov··on Tldraw Computer
If I can plug my own API key into this and/or run Llama locally, that'd be great.

It reminds me of a tool I saw recently called Heuristica [0]. Would like to try it but I don't like being tied to a subscription and the free plan seems quite limited if I can't even plug my own key in. Don't see why this can't do what Heuristica does! :)

Oh my god, I've been wanting to create something like this for a while.

Gonna play around with this and report back! Looks amazing so far.

petargyurov··on US airlines transported passengers over two light-years since the last crash
I loathe aggregated stats like these. Combined hours watch time, combined miles traveled, etc... it serves no purpose other than to come up with a huge number.
petargyurov··on I taught rats to drive a car, and it may help us lead happier lives
You're asking a genuine question but careful not to sink too deep into whataboutism.

Just because abhorrent treatment of animals exists in one industry doesn't mean it's OK for it to appear in another, or in this case, in the field of science.

As you can imagine, there isn't a single combined committee for these two...

petargyurov··on Ask HN: How much money do you spend each month?
> Rent + Utilities + Internet: 250

Is there a zero missing on the end of that? :)

Actually, that'd be quite high depending on where in Europe you are, but then 250 seems absurdly low.

Curious to hear which city you're in.

petargyurov··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (October 2024)
Woah, nice! You're much further ahead than I am. Good luck!
petargyurov··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (October 2024)
I'm working on an app that "scans" your grocery receipts and gives you breakdown of what you're spending your money on, e.g:

dairy: 50%, meat: 10%, alcohol: 5%, etc...

petargyurov··on MVSplat: Efficient 3D Gaussian Splatting from Sparse Multi-View Images
Someone help me understand inference here.

Every gaussian splat repo I have looked at doesn't mention how to use the pre-trained models to "simply" take MY images as input and output a GS. They all talk about evaluation, but the CMD interface requires the eval datasets as input.

Is training/fine-tuning on my data the only way to get the output?

petargyurov··on Show HN: I built an animated 3D bookshelf for ebooks
Thanks, yeah I currently just hardcode the image URL from whatever cover I find online. Maybe you had an old version cached or the image just failed to load for whatever reason.

I need to update my bookshelf really, I haven't bothered to do so since 2023!

petargyurov··on What are great international locations to work at?
> I've got no responsibilities, no kids or SO at the moment, so now would be the perfect time in my career to do something wild.

Perfect opportunity to NOT work for a bit. If you can afford it, go backpacking. Solo or otherwise. You will gain direct insight into where you want to live/work. Of course, when travelling, everything is seen through rose-tinted glasses, so bear in mind that the reality of living somewhere new is always more complicated than what you see when "on holiday".

petargyurov··on What are great international locations to work at?
It's a bit over the top to put the UK in the same category as Ukraine and the Middle East isn't?
