perssontm··on The new Digg
Have they skipped the categories? Is there no sorting whatsoever?

Without categories I'm doomed to read sportsrelated articles...

perssontm··on Play blackjack in Excel
I wouldnt be surprised if theese guys are beeing bought by MS sooner rather than later.

Replacing VBA feels like it should be quite high on the priority list.

perssontm··on Introducing Anypic: an open source clone of Instagram
If it just had been the open source clone of instagram which I could host somewhere of my own to really own the results. And get my friends to join this shared space as well, so we wouldn't be dependent on instagram as much.

Something like "diaspora-similarity" but with instagram features.

Or heck, I might just revert to email. :)

perssontm··on What data connectors would you want in a BI/Dashboards SaaS service?
ODBC is a good common connector. I would also expect excelfiles to work, quite useful when doing temporary mockup stuff.

How do you compare with for example qlikview?

perssontm··on Bike - phpMyAdmin replacement for geeks
Yeah, it is, but I have a long commitment to my last name. :)
perssontm··on Bike - phpMyAdmin replacement for geeks
I couldnt agree more, setting up Bike on every other server gives you the same maintenance headache(perhaps a little simpler) as having a version of phpMyAdmin on each.

I just yesterday wrote a blogpost about tunneling mysql and using a locally hosted phpMyAdmin for those needs. That will give you the benefit of having phpMyAdmin at one place and you'll be motivated to keep that updated and properly configured. http://text.krona.tm/post/25982176151/using-phpmyadmin-witho...

perssontm··on Skype 4.0 for Linux
It still says try skype 2.2 beta on the page, but when I download it, I get a file called skype-debian_4.0.deb :)
perssontm··on 20 lines of code that beat A/B testing every time
This sounds really interesting, I might have been close to building this before without realizing. :) Seems really easy to setup as well, will be interesting to hear any counter-argument in the comments.
perssontm··on Supporting IE Is Too Much Work
Just get an account at www.crossbrowsertesting.com . I did around 2 years back I think, and its really convenient. you vnc to whatever os/browser combo you like and test it out. They have a demo for local testing as well, but I've always used a reverse ssh tunnel for that.

Note, Im not affiliated with crossbrowsertesting.com in any way.

perssontm··on DVDs and Blu-rays will now carry two unskippable government warnings
Its really strange, I get annoyed each time I put on a dvd for my son. If it at least could remember that I've seen the warnings and the spinning universal 100 times before.

I wrote a blog post in frustration a while back, wishing we would get cookies in the dvd to avoid that. :) http://text.krona.tm/post/11012559642/bring-cookies-from-the...

perssontm··on Can you build a startup on .Net?
Microsoft does the right thing here to give licenses away to startups. However, I would try to stick to their mainstream products which are likely to survive a few years ahead and avoid the "to-new-unproven" ones, mainly to make sure the product is still developed and maintained 3+ years down the line.

I'd go for open source any day, but that brings other challenges instead. :)

perssontm··on Open source efforts of february
Almost, the setup was quick but getting familiar with wordpress wasnt quick. And also, it was a low month, I hope to land around 8-10 hours. Also, the time tracking is proabably on the low side, but should be a fair comparison between month at least I think.

Doing the blogposts are a way to force myself to prioritize it, which I havent really done this past month.

perssontm··on Galera 2.0 GA Released (The synchronous multi-master cluster for MySQL)
How different is it from using a single mysql-server, is it entirely feature compatible?
perssontm··on Show HN: 7courses - The easy to use online recipe manager.
The xml-part is a personal concern, I realize most users would think like in your example. :)
perssontm··on Show HN: 7courses - The easy to use online recipe manager.
You should really offer an xml or similar export as well. If you're confident about your service, users will stay. But asking user to pay to enter data in, without a convenient and reasonable way out is a bit harsh.

Really nice and clean layout though, and good demo. I would love to see and easy way to take a photo for each, perhaps through a mobilapp or just give each recipe(or user) an email adress where they can send a photo and then connect it to a recipe.

What would be the path into this, I mean lots of people have existing trays of torn papers and stuff with this on. A selling point for me would be how to easily get rid of it. Perhaps a crowd-sourced ocr, if I scan it and make it public, anyone can retype it into the interface for me? Others would probably be intrigued to find great stuff within the mess of scans, and hopefully want to type it in for real.

perssontm··on Ask HN: The perfect 20-50 people office network setup?
I agree, perhaps not worth the hassle. Although I stated it as a requirement because I feel its sane to expect that would "just work", but apparently not.

I was thinking about some sort of auth-proxy for authenticating against google apps, and in case google apps doesnt respond it would use whatever happened last time, as a cache. And that proxy could be used for PAM, network login, filesharing etc. But its not in the scope for this project to develop that.

perssontm··on Ask HN: The perfect 20-50 people office network setup?
GFI languard looks really good, it all adds up though, but looks good pricewise as well.

Thanks for the tip!

perssontm··on Ask HN: The perfect 20-50 people office network setup?
Yes, I will let someone else experienced do this, I'll be buying it and setting requirements though, thats why I'm trying to get a feeling of the directions.
perssontm··on Ask HN: The perfect 20-50 people office network setup?
This have been my intention, but the filesharing is becoming more and more frustrating with google. I've looked at third-party solutions to the missing webdav/drivemapping part of google docs but it doesnt seem good enough.

Also, I'll miss out on security policies which can be nice. As it looks now, we will go with a minimum active directory machine handling local filesharing and logins and gpos.

I hope I'll be able to keep away from sharepoint and exchange, but i'll just wait and see.

perssontm··on Ask HN: The perfect 20-50 people office network setup?
Whats the big hurdle with administration? It sounds easy to add user, is there anything else? Or is it the administration of the entire solution that is timeconsuming?

I looked at dropbox teams, but that felt expensive at the time and didnt offer any good groupwide sharing capabilities. But price-wise it will probably be cheaper than the proposed ms-setup.

perssontm··on Ask HN: The perfect 20-50 people office network setup?
Good point about security, as for compliance the business is waiting for another legal case which will make it more clear.

The most important thing about the fileshare is for it to be a network attachable storage, mounted as a drive on the computer, so all software can be used on files. We have some pretty bizarre ones, and also utilizes a lot of images so thumbnails are a must for it.

perssontm··on Ask HN: The perfect 20-50 people office network setup?
Not much, I've implemented a temporary solution for that, but would like something centrally managed which utilizes the same accounts etc. And the current setup doesnt give us any domain controller(for machines). DOH! Sounds like I just have to give up and get that boring ms-setup. :)
perssontm··on Ask HN: The perfect 20-50 people office network setup?
No, nothing wrong perhaps, I just kind of wished the world gotten further. :)
perssontm··on Tell HN: You said not to. So I quit my job and started. 5 mos later: OpenPhoto
Really nice, I've been waiting for this and checking it out from time to time during the autumn.

A few screenshots of a real gallery would have been nice, or a feature list. Its really technical as of now. The oneline installer looks really cool, but a bit scary, the script looked safe though, so I might try that.

Great work, will try it out in the near future. :)

perssontm··on Follow up to “Android graphics true facts”, or The Reason Android is Laggy
The interesting thing would be an estimate of the amount of work needed to move the android ui-rendering to its separate real-time thread. Would it even be realistically possible?
perssontm··on Google chrome segfaults after upgrade on debian stable
True! I'll add it there as well, I thought it was a bit of interest, to avoid upgrading and loosing the functionality of chrome when working. Sorry if a bit OT.
perssontm··on Hack initcwnd for faster page loading
This is really interesting, but it seems like its the same information floating around on different blogs. If I didnt know better I'd assume they copy each other regarding this.

All lack some real and more thorough testing, they include that simple example, perhaps its enough, but its a bit light on the facts to get me to try it.

Would be interesting to know how this works in virtual environments, can I set this inside a VPS, or would the main kernel in the dom0(xen-host-stuff) override this?

Are there any sideeffects?

perssontm··on Our startup EntryDNS a free DNS management service
Looks good, although the previous mentioned point of your revenuestream is a big questionmark, I'd rather pay 1USD/domain or whatever to know it will stick around.

I tried looking at your ns-servers for the screenshot-example(100armstrong.biz) but that seemed fake. Your own domain are using:

answer: entrydns.net 3600 NS ns3.serveriai.lt answer: entrydns.net 3600 NS ns4.serveriai.lt answer: entrydns.net 3600 NS ns1.serveriai.lt answer: entrydns.net 3600 NS ns2.serveriai.lt

Checking what serveriai.lt is makes me wonder how stable that can be. Not beeing from .lt its hard to know if thats a thrustworthy provider. I would suggest you put a few examples ns-records for the domains that will be hosted by you, and perhaps an action plan for failures at any of those, or a nameserver upstream. A good addition might also be to show how geographically distributed your ns-servers are, and perhaps give users a few options so they can make sure theres always a nsserver within the same country or continent as most of the users.

Your upcoming feature-list looks really interesting and something that could be well suited as a paid-for-option.

Good luck!

Edit: got some more ideas after posting

perssontm··on Realtime stats with Google analytics
really? Its hosted on tumblr, so I guess they might have screwed up. Worrying though, I picked them since I wanted something hasslefree.
