pers0n··on Diamonds are losing their allure
Exactly, before like the 1920s people just gave gold rings. It’s all marketing, probably the most successful one ever
pers0n··on ‘I just assumed it would happen’: the unspoken grief of childless men
Men can have children even in their 80s, rich people do it all the time.
pers0n··on Block YouTube ads on AppleTV by decrypting and stripping ads from Profobuf
The setup looks like it would take a week to setup right.
pers0n··on New York is about to crack down on short-term rentals on September 5th
From a quick search, metro is about 750 homes. So its quite a bit
pers0n··on What's the case for naturally mined diamonds anymore?
I think before the 1920s people just bought gold rings. Just get another gem, something that is actually worth the money or just get a gold ring
pers0n··on Incumbents are fighting back against disrupters
Aldi has better prices on meat and produce, I just wish they would start building more of them
pers0n··on The US climate law is fueling a factory frenzy
Family leave act, probably the last worker right we got
pers0n··on Show HN: Lottielab – Create product animations in the browser easily
https://rive.app/ Rive has better performance than Lottie, I’m not affiliated in anyway
pers0n··on Downloading a video should be “fair use” as recording a song from the radio
Whats to stop me from playing a video full screen while I have a screen recorder? There are plenty of sites out there that can already convert youtube to mp3s
pers0n··on Maybe the problem is that Harvard exists
Exactly, I had to go to a junior college and transfer later on due to funds. Plus driving to and from out of state is expensive so I was stuck being a commuter at local institutions. Not to mention some kids that are good at sports can’t afford to play either and possibly get a scholarship.

That’s life though, but most of the upper class and higher don’t realize it.

pers0n··on Microbial Odor Profile of Polyester and Cotton Clothes After a Fitness Session
Use vinegar in your washer, I’ve never had a problem with polyester
pers0n··on Fed raises rates 25 bps
The mere $2000 stimulus checks are nothing.

It was the billions in PPP loans that lots of people used fraudulently, including our own politicians. On top of that, it was decided they didnt need to be paid back, so people go to keep all the fancy cars, electronics and real estate they bought with it.

pers0n··on Managing Kitchen Fruit Flies with a Little Shop of Horrors
Cinnamon powder works, but use a mask when putting a lot out. I got a sinus infection from putting it in all my houseplants
pers0n··on Bezos backed company has over $100M in homes despite US housing shortage
Shortly before home prices began to surge in 2021, Amazon.com Inc. Founder Jeff Bezos made a bet on a Seattle-based startup that had a mission to make real estate investments more accessible to retail investors. That year, Arrived Homes became the first company to legally sell shares of individual rental properties to nonaccredited investors.

Bezos's investment in the real estate company's seed round appears to have been well-timed since skyrocketing home prices followed by rising mortgage rates have helped send the homeownership rate in the U.S. to its lowest level since 1970.

The billionaire tech entrepreneur is betting on the U.S. becoming a nation of renters.

pers0n··on An Airbnb collapse won’t fix America’s housing shortage
It’s a combination of things.

Airbnb

A rise in Investors/flippers

Ppp fraud to invest in real estate

Corporations buying real estate

pers0n··on Quality of new vehicles in US declining on more tech use: study
I use my suv as a cheap truck. I’ve hauled a lot of furniture and other stuff with the back seats down.
pers0n··on Quality of new vehicles in US declining on more tech use: study
Exactly, the more bells and whistles the more can go wrong. The basic model is good when it comes to cars
pers0n··on The US government is buying troves of data about Americans
The USA is good for making money and being safe from foreign invasion.

Otherwise a lot has been going downhill and there is too much patriotic pride to admit or change it. But it's multiple issues, hyper-capitalism, lobbyists, no form of conflict of interest rules for politicians or anyone working for them, multiple news channels supporting "2 views", but all on the same page of ignoring the class warfare.

I've talked to lots of people from other countries as I meet a lot of people and talk to many and most see us as going downhill or having poor worker rights and no social safety net (healthcare).

Someone from China told me their parents think Americans work too much. Another person from Eastern Europe things we are in the toilet, etc. Other people from South America saying how they would pick Canada over the US any day. I just laugh when I hear it, because I feel we are too blind to see it.

School shooting solutions are all about guns instead of the real issue, mental health.

Politicians that want people limited on what they can earn with SS (keeping elderly people poor), when they get very good retirement benefits. Politicians dodging taxes or making sure the IRS is ill staffed, when its proven more IRS helps get the bungled dollars from Big Companies and Pockets that are cheating the system.

pers0n··on Buy well, buy once
Most of the gung-ho minimalists are upper middle class or rich, they may have only a sofa and coffee table and a lamp in their $6000 a month apartment but those 3 items cost over $10,000.
pers0n··on Buy well, buy once
I’ve noticed some minimalists go to the extremes of limiting items based on numbers. In a way it’s a bit of a luxury.

Many people keep items or leftover stuff (one time use tools or extra glue, etc) because it saves money and time from having to drive to the store or order it online again incase they need it again. Those just incase items build up but they can end up being handy.

As someone that’s moved every year for like 6 yrs in a row, I sell about 95% stuff I don’t use but I still have a lot of things just in case that take up little space in junk drawer, etc. I think focusing on what you like and enjoy is better. Putting a hard round number on items is too much of a mental waste of time

pers0n··on Reddark: Website to watch subreddits going dark
Many Reddit’s are run by angry folks, I’ve asked questions before only to be scolded and other times to crickets because it was not a funny picture/video or meme.

Any real forum I could find on the same topic always had nicer people and my questions got replies.

The problem is that forums cost money and time to host, update, prevent spam, etc.

Oh and I hate the Reddit auto-moderation, a post will never get posted because I was too new and then your dependent on the email to the Reddit moderators to move it out from an email they may never read.

pers0n··on The explosive legacy of the hand sanitizer boom
You didn’t always have access to a place to wash your hands or soap. Many Native Americans don’t have running water and sanitizer was needed badly, when they asked the government to help they got sent body bags instead
pers0n··on 90% of laid-off H1-B visa holders were able to find new work
Would you say the same for migrant workers? If so how long should they work cheap before citizenship?
pers0n··on 58% of US adults have heard of ChatGPT; 14% have tried it
Not everyone had a computer at that time either. They would need a computer, or access to one for free in their spare time that had the hardware and ability to get online.
pers0n··on Typescale: A tool for easy CSS typography
Because the current methods to it are very complicated and only work with a few fonts. A reliable baseline rhythm would lead to better typography and sense of visual order.

More calm More orderly Easier to read More professional

pers0n··on Typescale: A tool for easy CSS typography
I was hoping it was for baseline rhythm, something CSS needs badly
pers0n··on YouTube on TVs getting unskippable 30-second and pause screen ads
They need that money to try to invest more into the AI war
pers0n··on 47% of all internet traffic came from bots in 2022?
Can you share the blocklist?
pers0n··on Google I/O: Big changes coming for SEOs with ubiquitous AI
Exactly, just like info gets ripped off websites onto Wikipedia, with very few references, it’s hell getting them cuz they claim you want the link back, cahtgpt references hardly anything
pers0n··on I'm never investing in Google's smart home ecosystem again
What happens when your smart device is 7-15+yrs old and isnt supported by anything anymore?
