perpetuallunch··on Greenland issues "strong warning" as American oil firm illegally drills wells
What’s Greenland going to do? Make a strongly worded statement? They’re kinda out of options.

How do you know you’re not gaslighting yourself?

Maybe the article never changed, it always read how the other person interpreted it.

You read it through your filters and took something completely different than what it said.

I’ve seen this happen heaps. Even with articles where I’ve been able to prove it hasn’t been edited, and books too.

The overwhelming majority of what people consider “mental health” issues simply stop being issues when people fix:

Diet

Exercise

Faith

I can prove God exists is the same sense that you can explain why there isn’t simply nothing at all.
perpetuallunch··on Tl;dv: Over 180k meetings left wide open
Ultimately science can’t explain why there is anything at all, rather than the more likely scenario of there simply being nothing.

It’s not a question science can answer.

Once there is something, rather than the obviously more likely nothing at all, science won’t help you understand why physics > chemistry > biology is ever so precisely tuned to be able to give rise to everything necessary for complex life to arise.

Without resorting to circular reasoning.

There’s definitely an aspect of mythos in the, well, “creation myths”.

The religious texts of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, have anything but a primitive understanding of the human condition, the human world. My understanding of the worlds other great religions is very limited, other than to say they appear to have served their adherents well enough to have got them this far.

The problems the world faces today are primarily those of frivolity, corruption, excess. No amount of science is going to help there.

Solar needs to address its dispatchability problem before it becomes viable as anything other than a vanity project.

Australia is experiencing this problem now to a limited extent, and is walking in to a disaster scenario with the scheduled shutdown of 5 gigawatts of coal fired electricity generating across three sites over the next three years with nothing in the pipeline to replace that 5GW.

perpetuallunch··on Half of Europe's towns and villages have fewer residents than 60 years ago
When did the USA interfere militarily in Europe?

Would Europe have been better off under Nazi Germany?

Is that what you’re saying?

perpetuallunch··on Amazon backs power plant that may become top source of US climate pollution
Why? Because you said so?

So China and India can use all the fossil fuels they want, and other counties too not just them.

But the West has to kowtow to Net Zero / ”Renewables” nonsense?

We’re not buying it anymore.

Everything has tradeoffs.

Destroying the economy and letting low income and poor people freeze in the dark or melt in the sun is passé.

perpetuallunch··on Tl;dv: Over 180k meetings left wide open
There is exactly zero evidence that any religion isn’t true.

How could there be?

Evolution can’t disprove the existence of God.

You can’t know that.

His life isn’t a double-blind randomised placebo controlled study.

There is no second instance of him to falsify your claim.

perpetuallunch··on US Military's cyber command unit grapples with cluster of deaths by suicide
One thing talking to a therapist has a proven ability to do is fatten their purse at your expense.

There are no measurable benefits better than placebo.

The rates of sudden blindness have doubled as a result of the massive rise in the numbers of people who are taking GLP-1.

Sudden blindness on one or both eyes. No warning, no symptoms, wake up with damaged eyesight up to and including blindness.

For most people who are overweight or obese it’s been something they’ve been able to live with.

Waking up blind would be catastrophic.

These drugs should be taken off the market.

perpetuallunch··on US Military's cyber command unit grapples with cluster of deaths by suicide
This is all complete and utter rubbish.

If you talk to any man who’s overcome adversity, they’ll straight up tell you they didn’t do any of this nonsense.

perpetuallunch··on US Military's cyber command unit grapples with cluster of deaths by suicide
There’s no such thing as “mental health issues”.

There is such a thing as the “Mental Health Industrial Complex”.

How did humans evolve and survive for hundreds of thousands of years without “mental health issues” and suddenly 23% of children in public schools have a diagnosis.

perpetuallunch··on US Military's cyber command unit grapples with cluster of deaths by suicide
In the same way that the sky is blue, talking about one’s own mental health, especially for boys and men, is a net negative.

It’s obvious once you see it.

You’ll come round.

> Of course everyone has minor mental health problems

I think this is an extremely dangerous position to take.

We’re all flawed, the human condition and all that, but I don’t believe that necessarily translates to ’minor mental health problems’.

perpetuallunch··on New Amazon Data Center Is Set to Have the Most Polluting Power Plant in the U.S.
Yep, exactly. Due to the deranged Net Zero policies of successive Australian federal and state governments, Australia have experienced skyrocketing electricity prices, so any small decrease in residential and industrial prices now is effectively a shit sandwich.

The question isn’t whether a service has a presence in the sense of employees or regional office, or headquarters.

The question is: do they office services to residents of said country / state.

If so they may well be subject to certain laws that, if broken, could result in penalties up to an including extradition of the responsible officers.

perpetuallunch··on US Military's cyber command unit grapples with cluster of deaths by suicide
The extraordinary claim is that talking to a ‘counsellor’ or ‘psychologist’ has any net positive benefits that are measurable in any way.
perpetuallunch··on US Military's cyber command unit grapples with cluster of deaths by suicide
News just in: talking about your mental health, especially for men, does not improve your mental health.

For the majority of men, most of the time.

If it did, shouldn’t we see mental health improving by now?

perpetuallunch··on Fastmail offers EU data region
That’s not going to help anyone.

perpetuallunch··on US strikes $1.2B deal to pay German firm to halt offshore wind projects
London’s tube system had an eminent domain, technology, political will problem. It’s entirely fixable.

Cold weather kills more people than hot weather. By a huge margin.

People frequently move from cooler areas to areas that have comparatively hotter climates than even the worst (completely fabricated) global warming predictions.

But they rarely do the opposite.

perpetuallunch··on US strikes $1.2B deal to pay German firm to halt offshore wind projects
Show me an example where this is being used in the real word, at scale, in a cost effective manner.

It’s not even a good idea. Water has a greater capacity to store heat than rocks and dirt.

perpetuallunch··on New Amazon Data Center Is Set to Have the Most Polluting Power Plant in the U.S.
That is an article about a prediction, not actual data about a drop in price.

An article from a month and a half in the past.

Still waiting.

> General consumer prices went down

What now?

Where in Australia have consumer prices gone down?

> because of a reduction in peak electricity use driving up retail costs

I don’t understand what you’re trying to day here.

> Or lifting a really heavy thing and letting it fall slowly.

I challenge you to run the numbers on this.

Or at least read or watch someone who has.

Whenever you’re certain you know the answer, it behooves to try to prove yourself wrong.

Unsurprisingly, gravity is an extraordinarily weak force. It merely appears otherwise because the total mass of the Earth is literally astronomical at around the 5.9722×10^24 kg mark. Concrete blocks hanging from a crane, much less so.

Don’t believe me.

Pumped hydro is a nonstarter: do you see any suitable geography anywhere? Yep, they’ve already been dammed damn it. So approximately no one^ can have their existing hydro upgraded to pumped hydro retro fitted to pumped, and have the surrounding landscape covered in solar and wind.

How helpful!

Chemical batteries? South Australia has a decent sized one. I think it can power some of the state for about 12 seconds.^^

^okay, not no one: Hydropower accounts for approximately 15%, but you have to choose pumped hydro sites where it also makes sense for wind and / or solar, so it’s clearly not an answer for everyone everywhere. Not even close.

^^hyperbole! I know. Look, it’s actually around 1–1.5 hours, which is statistically closer to my estimate of 12 seconds than anything actually useful like a day or a week.

Show me anywhere that is recycling wind tubing blades.

Or solar panels.

Steel is infinitely recyclable and valuable enough as scrap to largely be recycled at a high rate.

Solar panels are so cheap new because there’s bigger all of anything worth recovering in them.

The secondhand market is littered with stacks of panels that don’t move.

The glass isn’t worth anything as scrap, we literally throw it in the recycling bin and it costs councils and governments to recover it and manage the waste streams, largely done as a vanity project.

Aluminium is so light and there is so little of it wrapped around a solar panel it’s not worth the labour and machine capability to recover it.

perpetuallunch··on US strikes $1.2B deal to pay German firm to halt offshore wind projects
True true. The old housing stock is poorly insulated. I mean: not at all insulated, and retro fitting insulation is painfully expensive.

Sure, insulation in ceilings is relatively easy to do, but swapping windows out for double glazed windows with solar thermal reflective film, very expensive.

New homes are much better designed, requiring wall and ceiling insulation and double glazed windows or better.

And yeah, the state of Victoria is still prompting banning new homes even connect to gas. Seems strange when we export around the same volume of LNG as Qatar.

Modern coal fired power plants are much cleaner than those that contributed to acid rain.

You seriously believe coal fired power hasn’t evolved in the last 40 years?

You’re saying that renewables are cheap but only if you include gravity storage.

What gravity storage? The only useful one is pumped hydro, and that works approximately nowhere because of a lack of suitable geography.

Australia’s Snowy 2.0 pumped hydro is on track to cost an infinite amount and / or be finished never.

perpetuallunch··on US strikes $1.2B deal to pay German firm to halt offshore wind projects
Does your 18 full reactors count name plate capacity only, or does it take in to consideration that wind needs to be massively over built or also come with gas peaked plants?

This is important.
