perishabledave··on Diodes Hate It – Clipping with DSPs
Thanks for the post! Right before I saw this on HN I was watching a video on how to build a Klon clone, so this write-up couldn't have come at a better time.
perishabledave··on The manager’s schedule is holding remote work back
As an EM, these points are quite helpful. Regarding your fourth point, how do you filter out or deal with bad apples?
perishabledave··on Bike crash left Spokane man unconscious, so his Apple Watch called 911
Fall detection has been available since Series 4 https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208944
perishabledave··on iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max
I think that's the joke. If they added more cameras such that they covered the back of the phone, there wouldn't be a bump.
perishabledave··on Shenanigans With Hash Tables
Mike Ash’s posts are gold. I wish there were more in depth technical posts like those on HN or Lobsters.
perishabledave··on Tesla employees say they took shortcuts, worked through harsh conditions
https://www.nhtsa.gov/ratings You can check the safety ratings by the NTHSA.
perishabledave··on Reddit is raising a huge round near a $3B valuation
Aside from the other mentioned reasons, browsers can have ad blockers installed. The reddit mobile app ensures they can monetize.

[edit] now that I think of it, probably the same reason Twitch was pushing its desktop app.

perishabledave··on Ask HN: What software do you actually pay for?
Aside from a few things that were already mentioned here, I just started paying for sr.ht from sircmpwn. I’m a bit weary to completely replace my Github account since it’s in alpha but otherwise it’s been a great service.
perishabledave··on Apple to build campus in Austin and sites in Seattle, San Diego and Culver City
My guess would be that the office is from the Beats acquisition. A quick job search on their website seems to confirm that as there are a few audio/DSP positions.
perishabledave··on Why Do Laptop Makers Have Such Terrible Websites
Can’t speak from actually purchasing from them, but System76 laptops seems like a great option for getting a Linux computer. The website is in stark contrast to the maze that the Dell website is.
perishabledave··on Phoenix 1.4.0 released
One thing worth highlighting in the post is that Phoenix now uses Ecto 3.0. This latest version of Ecto separates Ecto's data mapping and validation from Ecto's SQL adapters. Practically this means you can use Ecto's changesets when you either don't need persistence or aren't using a SQL database.

Additionally there are a number of features that make Ecto 3.0 a great release: http://blog.plataformatec.com.br/2018/10/a-sneak-peek-at-ect...

perishabledave··on Show HN: Technical note app that builds a knowledge base
One of the screenshots doesn’t resize properly down to mobile. FYI.
perishabledave··on Ask HN: Google Inbox is shutting down, what should I use now?
Spark is by far my favorite email app. Unfortunately, I’m a bit weary of using it because they get access to all my emails. I know they use it for push notifications, but I still have to blindly trust that they won’t over reach.
perishabledave··on Learning from Terminals to Design the Future of User Interfaces
I wonder if the 1Password animation only seems egregious to me because I'm not the crowd that it'll add value to. I understand on some level what 1Password does when I enter in my password. If I were to get my parents to use 1Password however, the visual effect of the vault unlocking could help them understand what 1Password does.

I think we may be too quick to judge these things within our own context rather than in the broad range of users which these user systems were designed for.

perishabledave··on Successful Companies Use Erlang and Elixir
Discord is also a good one. They’ve written some great write ups on using Elixir too.
perishabledave··on Hype or Not? Some Perspective on OpenAI’s DotA 2 Bot
I think the root of that is the high reliance on teammates and the level of commitment each game takes. Unlike League there is no early surrender, so if you’re in a rough game you have to endure the full duration which can last around an hour. If you feel like it’s your teammate, who is probably randomly paired with you, that is failing it’s easy to get frustrated. This is one of the many things that make Dota either extremely frustrating or extremely satisfying.
perishabledave··on OpenAI at the Dota 2 World Championships
Sumail won once until they gave the bot insane creep blocking skills.

perishabledave··on Elixir 1.5 released
Minor correction, BEAM is just as old if not a couple years older than JVM.

perishabledave··on Top SpaceX employee throws shade at just about all of his competitors
Agreed, and it's pretty neat hearing about a startup actually disrupting an industry that seems so insurmountable.
perishabledave··on Top SpaceX employee throws shade at just about all of his competitors
Only read the quotes on the article, but the comments from the engineer are much tamer than the headline makes it out to be.
perishabledave··on I’m Old, Part XLI: Trolling Creative People
Reminds me of Mao, where the rules of the game are unspoken and you have to learn the rules by playing.

perishabledave··on Satirical Summaries of Hacker News
Ah thought it was one of the summary satires from the website. Nevermind :)
perishabledave··on Satirical Summaries of Hacker News
Can't find that quote anywhere, can you link it?
perishabledave··on Cog 1.0
Yea I had to dig into the docs, but you should get a good idea of what it does from a quick glance on the README, yea? The docs are really well done though. Kudos to your team!
perishabledave··on Cog 1.0
This is really neat! It took me a while to figure out what it is though, the README should have a better explanation of what it is and some use cases.
perishabledave··on Learn Elixir with a Rubyist (IV) – Types, Data Structures and Pattern Matching
This and the actor model for concurrency goes hand in hand. Not only do you have an pleasant way for writing concurrent software, but you have a foundation (BEAM and OTP) that is built for the concurrency model.

From what I've seen, people investigate Elixir for the functional programming but stay for the concurrency.

perishabledave··on Show HN: Fun tool that cut my family and friends tech support time in half
IIRC Fog Creek's Copilot was specifically for that purpose. Not sure how actively it's being maintained now thought.

https://www.copilot.com/

I had hopes that Screen Hero would fill that role before Slack bought them out. Still a great tool, wish it wasn't tied to Slack though.

perishabledave··on iPhone 7 Camera Review: Rwanda
There are and will be plenty of reviews with in-depth comparison shots. Ars Technica already has a few and I'm sure there will be more to follow. This however is something quite different which makes it a great review.
perishabledave··on Vesper, Adieu
Is it really just the iOS App Store though? People expect everything to be free nowadays: news, email, productivity apps like Google Docs, games. Don't think you can pin this problem on Apple.
perishabledave··on Photos from the Korean War
These photos bring up a lot of family history for me. Thanks for sharing them.

My mother's family lived in Seoul when the war broken out. During my mother's first birthday party, her aunt and her children came through the door looking half dead. My aunt lived further north and made the few days trek with her children and only the clothes on her back. Her husband was an engineer on a power plant, when the communist party took over. He was taken away by soldiers never to be seen again. My mother's family eventually had to flee as well, losing all their possessions and farmland.

Though my mother was too young for a first hand account of the war, we still have a single photograph of my mother's first birthday party. You can see her sitting in front of all the celebratory food. What you can't see in the picture is my aunt and her children on the other side of the room on the verge of death.
