perfectstorm··on California’s population shrinks for third straight year
> During the periods of heat or cold, we now just peace out and travel, because we have ample cash to do so and still manage to put away for retirement.

that's nice but is it a good long term solution? i presume you don't have any kids. i wonder how this approach would work once you have kids and they start school. or maybe you do have kids but they are much older and moved out or no plans for kids idk.

perfectstorm··on Argentina Wins the World Cup
it was an incredible game. Argentina was cruising along nicely till 79mins and then the penalty happened and a minute later an equalizer. who would have thought that. followed by an engaging 30mins of overtime. wow. as a neutral, it was entertaining. Happy for Messi.
perfectstorm··on Argentina Wins the World Cup
but after 120mins of play, somehow they have to make a decision.
perfectstorm··on Tax filing websites have been sending users’ financial information to Facebook
someone else will replace them and have their own version of FB pixel. government needs to put a stop to these shady practices but that's too much work, isn't it? who is going fund their next election campaign if they act tough.

Meanwhile the US government is spending $15 million (https://www.propublica.org/article/files-taxes-free-inflatio...) to study free tax filing. the keyword is study, not implement.

perfectstorm··on Apple Rankings
They gave Honeycrisp 5 stars for sweetness but only gave 2 stars to Fuji. that doesn't make sense to me. Fuji is one of the sweetest tasting apples and Honeycrisp is a mix of sweetness and tartness.
perfectstorm··on Toxic smog has turned India’s capital into a ‘gas chamber’
it's not an unsolvable problem but more like a political issue. year after year it's the same and yet no one does anything. from what i recall it's the farmers from one state burning crop stubble and the resulting smoke gets carried into the other state (in this case Delhi - which is technically not a state). central government has beef with the Delhi government so they won't intervene.
perfectstorm··on Tesla engineers were on-site to evaluate the Twitter staff’s code, workers said
what a waste of everyone's time. as a manager, I can tell you that even my smartest engineers go through highs and lows in their career and there are days when they push out code like there's no tomorrow and days when they don't push out anything because you know there's life outside of work that affects them (their dog passed away or their wife filed for divorce or their daughter is sick and was taken to ER etc). An arbitrary 60 days look back makes no sense.
perfectstorm··on San Francisco is spending $1.7M on one public toilet
why not have a full time janitor who cleans after each visit? much cheaper than a self cleaning toilet. even if you pay $100k to the janitor in annual salary, it will take 10+yrs to reach 1.7M and who knows what kind of issues these self cleaning toilets will have in that 10yrs.
perfectstorm··on U.S. residents fight for the right to hang laundry (2009)
it depends on the fabric materials used. not all of them are prone to degradation from dryer heat. i didn't notice it until my wife told me about it so now i make an effort to dry my nicer clothes on a stand rather than in the dryer.
perfectstorm··on Google CEO tells employees not to ‘equate fun with money’ in heated meeting
not all swags are of same quality. some are much higher quality than others. i often wear my old employer's hoodie that i got on my first day 9 years ago. it's still going strong and comfy af. same goes for a Yeti tumbler. it's not a huge thing but definitely something to look forward to for some people.
perfectstorm··on Visual effects for the Indian blockbuster “RRR”
If you have Hulu watch Drishyam (Malayalam) and its sequel on Amazon prime Drishyam 2.
perfectstorm··on IRS will look into setting up a free e-filing system
They are going to look into it for $15 million dollars. Give that $15 million to a company like VMWare Tanzu Labs and they will deliver quality software which we can all use.

That being said, i don't expect this to happen in the next 5-10yrs because of ~bribing~ err lobbying (because this is America). TurboTax and H&R Block are not going to let this happen.

perfectstorm··on App Store doesn't accept “too simple” apps
help me understand this better. you are afraid that someone may access your private content if Apple allows side loading of apps? How is it any different than what's on macOS today? you can run any apps (after clearing it in System preferences) on your laptop but suddenly it's a security risk on your phone?
perfectstorm··on App Store doesn't accept “too simple” apps
maybe there's an app on Android already or maybe OP wants to learn iOS programming/SwiftUI/Swift.
perfectstorm··on Milwaukee Tool Raises the Bar with New USA Factory
which products/category of products do you (chose not to) buy that are made in the US?
perfectstorm··on Visa changes chargeback dispute program
> When most people think of fraud, they think of stolen account numbers or identity theft, but first party misuse, which can account for up to 75 percent of all chargebacks1, is when a cardholder disputes a legitimate purchase that they intended with their issuer. This includes customers refuting valid purchases such as long-forgotten recurring subscriptions, or children given access to use their parent’s card to make purchases with parental approval.

sounds like BS. if it's because a child made the purchase or they forgot to cancel subscription, why don't they deny the claim? it's not like every dispute claim has to approved.

this is akin to Visa and other credit card providers removing price match policy for purchases (up to n days from purchase date). one of the issuers said they are removing it because no one uses them. BS. if no one uses them, why not keep it for 1% of users who benefit from it?

perfectstorm··on BMW heated seats subscription costs $18 per month in South Korea
welcome to the new subscription economy courtesy of Apple and Google.
perfectstorm··on California aims to slash insulin prices
$72 is still expensive compared to other nations.
perfectstorm··on California aims to slash insulin prices
what a weird way to justify it. the patents on insulin expired decades ago so why does it cost $400 for uninsured? it doesn't cost pharma companies $400 to produce a vial (or $200 or $100). this is pure greed.

edit: say their insurance covers 80% of the cost, the patient still has to pay $80 (at $400). if the cost of a vial was $20, they only pay $4 which is more reasonable.

perfectstorm··on Preview, the Mac app people forget about
It’s a neat software and has tons of hidden features like for example, you can redact parts of a document. You can also combine different documents into a single pdf file.
perfectstorm··on Why Jony Ive left Apple to the ‘accountants’
if he was the reason why MacBook Pro had that terrible keyboard or if he was the reason for removing the MagSafe connector, I say good riddance.
perfectstorm··on Growing a mango tree from seed – one year time lapse [video]
I'm glad i'm not the only person who noticed the weight gain aspect and i have similar stories. I would eat three full meals a day whenever I go to India but I rarely gain any weight. I can't imagine what sort of weight gain I would get if i eat three similar meals here in the U.S.

When it's mango season in India you could smell from nearby areas (with right wind conditions). The mangoes you get at grocery stores in US has no smell and oftentimes taste plain/lifeless.

perfectstorm··on Filing Taxes Could Be Free and Simple. But H&R Block and Intuit Lobby Against It (2017)
why can't the U.S President do something about it? or does it have to be through congress?
perfectstorm··on India Semiconductor Mission
except they are all dead people who did good and it's a way of honoring their 'legacy'. this is much much different.
perfectstorm··on Dozens of U.S. states say Apple stifles competition, back Epic
better late than never. surprised CA didn't join the 'club'. App Store and Play Store have no competitions and they have been milking the developers for too long. it's time to put a stop to it. either force them to allow third party app stores or provide third party payment options.
perfectstorm··on Pfizer board member suggests end to mask, vaccine mandates
> So fix the capacity issue

even if a government build 100 new hospitals in a state do you think they can get enough healthcare workers? at least in Chicago reagion, they are having hard time finding healthcare workers. it's not like hospitals can go to a Med school and ask for 1000 new doctors, respiratory therapists and nurses.

perfectstorm··on Apple execs: Let's take a 30% cut of Uber and Lyft's membership programs (2018)
actually you can do it as long as you don't mention about cheaper alternatives anywhere within the app.
perfectstorm··on DMV ‘revisiting’ its approach to regulating Tesla’s public self-driving test
good. Tesla owners have been complaining about phantom braking for a while now with the new update. I would hate to be behind a Tesla that phantom brakes in the middle of the highway even if I come to a complete stop, the person behind me may not stop in time.
perfectstorm··on T-Mobile begins blocking iPhone users from enabling iCloud Private Relay in US
avoid T-Mobile and join AT&T or Verizon? i'm sure they have their fair share of shady/borderline illegal things they do.
perfectstorm··on Tell HN: Salary data is for sale
just the other day I got a prompt on my Amex (or Chase) account to update my salary info. i wouldn't be surprised if they sell this data to advertisers.
