pera··on Ask HN: Why is ChatGPT so bad at electronics?
Thank you, this looks very useful; I've tried it a few hours ago and it was not returning results (or it was taking a very long time to load) but will try again next week. Good luck with your launch.
pera··on Ask HN: Why is ChatGPT so bad at electronics?
> respond with true or false: is 1234uA submilliampere?

> True. 1234 microamperes (uA) is equal to 1.234 milliamperes (mA), which is sub-milliampere.

pera··on Ask HN: Why is ChatGPT so bad at electronics?
No, just straight chatgpt and claude but I will take a look, thanks
pera··on Ask HN: Why is ChatGPT so bad at electronics?
Yeah, I see what you mean, like if I want to find for instance "a sub milliampere X" but in the pdf it only says uA then it would be impossible for an LLM to suggest that
pera··on Ask HN: Why does current interest in retro computing focus on the early 80s?
It's been like this since the late 90s, "retro" basically means microcomputers
pera··on Ask HN: GPT-4 usually hallucinates when a prompt starts with "Do you know", why?
I do have an hypothesis: If GPT-4 was trained with a substantial amount of internet conversations it could be because it's very uncommon for people to respond to questions on forums with "No sorry I don't know", instead the question/thread would just die without answers.
pera··on Taxes on everyday Europeans bring in 13 times more revenue than taxes on wealth
Maybe people are not aware of it? My previous two submissions regarding this initiative were quickly flagged, while this submission (which only mentions the initiative) was demoted.

pera··on Ask HN: If LLMs are so useful, why haven't we seen any spike in productivity?
I agree with your comment to certain degree, specially in a commercial enterprise environment, but programming is still very time consuming and if a new invention made us faster it would be something noticeable, no?
pera··on I wish I didn't miss the '90s-00s internet
> There is neocites, and a small community of people who share this philosophy about the web (and that are relatively young), but I have not met anyone my age, in the real world, that would choose to do something like this.

When I was a teen at least half of my classmates had some kind of personal website (trends changed very fast back then but for my generation it all started with geocities). The idea of making something unique and sharing it online was very fun. It felt like you had a lot of freedom to do almost anything you wanted. There were no expectations, no standards to follow, nor "successful" people to imitate.

Probably my nostalgia is distorting my perception here but to me modern internet looks extremely homogeneous: everything seems to come from the same cookie-cutter, and the only degree of freedom you have is to either follow the formula for ranking higher or sink into the algorithmic oblivion.

pera··on Pavel Durov is questioned on 12 charges [pdf]
Ah so the import declaration required to publish in the French App Store is for Apple? Thanks for clarifying
pera··on Pavel Durov is questioned on 12 charges [pdf]
First time I hear about this as well and I'm not sure if I understand this correctly (because it's in French :p) but it sounds like if your software uses cryptography and you have French users then you need to submit a declaration to some French authority:

pera··on Data Exfiltration from Slack AI via indirect prompt injection
Sounds like XSS for LLM chatbots: It's one of those things that maybe doesn't seem impressive (at least technically) but they are pretty effective in the real world
pera··on Ask HN: What cool podcasts are you listening to?
I really like The Amp Hour by Dave Jones (EEVblog) and Chris Gammell, if you are into electronics I think it's a brilliant podcast:

pera··on Open source AI is the path forward
I wish Meta stopped using the "open source" misnomer for free of charge weights. In the US the FTC already uses the term Open-Weights, and it seems the industry is also adopting this term (e.g. Mistral).

Someone can correct me here but AFAIK we don't even know which datasets are used to train these models, so why should we even use "open" to describe Llama? This is more similar to a freeware than an open-source project.

pera··on EU to greenlight Chat Control tomorrow
The proposal leaked a few weeks ago[1] is extremely vague on this matter and does not clarify how providers should detect CSAM "prior to transmission". Is anyone aware of any sort of scanning technology that can be implemented purely on the client side? Note that the leaked text says that it should be able to detect known and new abuse material.

pera··on New branding, same scanning: Upload moderation undermines end-to-end encryption [pdf]
It wont be perfect and it will fail in stupid ways, by design.
pera··on Creativity has left the chat: The price of debiasing language models
I only skimmed the paper but this was my concern as well: if I understand correctly the author is measuring "creativity" in terms of syntactic and semantic diversity, which I guess could be a starting point, but if my model was just white noise would that make it infinitely creative? Did I miss anything?

Also, I have tried the first llama base model and while it was fun to interact with, I'm not sure how useful an "uncensored" (as some people likes to call it) LLM is for practical work. I think you could obtain better results using 4chan as a mechanical Turk service honestly.

pera··on Hacking millions of modems and investigating who hacked my modem
To be honest I would be very surprised if this was Cox as an organization and not just one or two very passionate workers who understood the severity of the issue and stayed after hours fixing it for free.
pera··on We're ending our Samsung collaboration
Linux won though :) "the year of the Linux Desktop" is a joke that started over two decades ago to dismiss Linux and OSS as a delusion of a few nerds but now we have Android devices everywhere, every server on earth using it, supercomputers/HPC clusters, game consoles, and even on desktop it keeps growing. Those who were in the FLOSS community back in the late 90s and early 00s probably remember how most people literally laughed at you and would call you crazy just for believing that things could be different.

The idea of a phone that can have its battery easily replaced is several orders of magnitude less crazy in my opinion.

pera··on Ex-Googler says company's AI panic is like Google+ fiasco all over again
Honestly if you can I would try to find something outside "AI" for now: even if you are doing real deep learning stuff the reality is that 99% of the people investing in AI at the moment can't differentiate obvious bs from real R&D at all, they are here just because of the hype and are throwing millions to anything with an AI tag on it, so when this bubble pops it will be ugly for everybody, indiscriminately. This is another dot com.

pera··on Microplastics found in every human testicle in study
Forgot to say, if it wasn't obvious: I'm not a microbiologist.

There are a few recent invivo studies on marine life showing several negative effects. I've seen also a few reviews from the past two years, for example: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S258900422...

There is a lot of interest in microplastics lately so I guess we will soon know how harmful they really are.

pera··on Microplastics found in every human testicle in study
If I go to Google Scholar and search for things like "nano micro plastics", "cytotoxicity", "oxidative stress", "immunotoxicity", "inflammation response", etc., I get back an enormous amount of (very) recent studies with conclusions I personally find concerning. It's hard to quantify the actual impact in the general population. At the same time everyone is looking for explanations for the raise of early onset cancers.
pera··on Slack AI Training with Customer Data
Companies do care: Why would you take additional risk of data leakage for free? In the best case scenario nothing happens but you also don't get anything out of it, in the worst case scenario extremely sensitive data from private chats get exposed and hits your company hard.
pera··on Apple apologizes for iPad 'Crush' ad that 'missed the mark'
> Maybe people still have souls

I agree with everything you say except for this part: not having an emotional reaction to the destruction of objects doesn't imply you don't have a soul (whatever that means to you). Not everybody had the opportunity in life to learn to play an instrument or make art, and I can see how for people like this a music instrument is not more sentimental than, say, a hammer.

Maybe you should feel good about feeling bad after watching that ad: it means you had the chance to experience the beauty of creating art.
