pera··on Google, Apple remove Navalny app from stores as Russian elections begin
The only winning move is not to play (i.e. don't have offices in authoritarian states)
pera··on X Window System on a Floppy
Oh wow I remember using this distro on a very old Toshiba 386 laptop, good times...
pera··on ProtonMail deletes 'we don't log your IP' from website after activist arrested
> If that is the case, why did they remove this statement?

As far as I understand according to several comments I read here in HN "99%" of the people don't understand what "by default" means, making the sentence misleading for most.

pera··on Climate activist arrested after ProtonMail provided his IP address
I use proton-bridge and a normal email client, although I've never tried to use it with Tor.
pera··on Incident with GitHub Actions, API Requests, Git Operations, Issues and more
Well I am getting 500s instantly, not after some internal timeout
pera··on Eternal Change for No Energy: A Time Crystal Finally Made Real
What's the difference between this and this other work also from the Max Planck Institute published back in February?:

pera··on Nepalese student learns HTML, JavaScript, CSS using just a mobile phone
In Argentina you have to pay 50% of the market value for all electronic imports and you will have to deal with customs officers (who will usually try to make your day quite miserable if you don't "tip" em)
pera··on An Exxon lobbyist thought he was in a job interview. Instead, it was recorded
I have no idea how you can conclude that this lobbyist is exaggerating his accomplishments, specially considering his career and what Exxon have been doing since the 70s (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExxonMobil_climate_change_cont...). I guess one could claim that there is nothing "new" into this story, but how can you possibly say that there is nothing controversial regarding being part of a massive decades-long disinformation and anti-environmental campaign?
pera··on An Exxon lobbyist thought he was in a job interview. Instead, it was recorded
I was surprised to learn about "shadow groups": I thought all lobbyists were required to be registered, but turns out that's actually not the case in the US.
pera··on “I wish I could have licensed the Id source code releases as BSD”
Maybe you can but the tweet is just Carmack expressing his opinion.
pera··on GitHub Copilot
Cool project! Have you seen any interesting correlations between languages, paradigms and the accuracy of your suggestions?
pera··on Amazon destroying millions of items of unsold stock in one of its UK warehouses
I'm not sure why you are being downvoted: 130k is a lot, specially when you consider this is just one warehouse in the UK. Extrapolate this number (including other retailers) and we might be talking about millions of products being destroyed daily on this planet just to increase profit margins for a few people.

The negative externalities from this must be tremendous.

pera··on G7: Rich nations back deal to tax multinationals
To me "spent on wages" means on every employee's salary, not only the top 0.01%

It would be pretty awesome if companies increased salaries for everyone at the same proportion of their interment of profit.

pera··on G7: Rich nations back deal to tax multinationals
When companies generate more profit they very rarely do any of the things you mention, why would they start doing it if they didn't have to pay taxes at all? In reality when a company gets to generate more profit the result is an even bigger gap between C-levels and normal employees salaries.

Here is a better idea: companies should be the only entities paying taxes in a capitalist society. If you think about it it really makes perfect sense :) since they already do all the boring accounting stuff and with the power of their lobbies they could make tax law simpler and more efficient (something that normal citizen will never be able to push forward).

> The way vim works is actually the opposite of what your brain wants, this is one of the reasons why learning vim tricks is hard.

Do you mean that you think "word change" instead of "change word"? To me this sounds like you have been programming in Java-like languages for too long :)

pera··on Behind the design of the fresh new Firefox coming June 1
I really don't get why Mozilla keep making disruptive UI changes while a very significant amount of users take the time to ask them to please not do it. At this point it feels almost as an act of aggression, it's honestly incomprehensible to me.
pera··on Ask HN: Are you satisfied with Elixir or do you regret choosing Elixir?
"Tooling is just terrible." <- this is a generalization, to which I strongly disagree :)
pera··on Ask HN: Are you satisfied with Elixir or do you regret choosing Elixir?
I strongly disagree with your generalisation regarding the tooling: Mix and Hex are without any doubt some of the most pleasant tools I have ever used. (I personally don't care about IDEs so can't comment on the lsp implementation or idea plugins)
pera··on Bitcoin miners are buying power plants
Last time I checked standby power consumption only in the US was an order of magnitude higher than Bitcoin mining all around the world, but it's hard to estimate the emissions of the latter due to its decentralised nature.
pera··on Mozilla hides Compact Mode in Firefox for new users
I sometimes feel like Mozilla knows exactly what features I love and then they go one by one and remove them (or make them only accessible through about:config) because "nobody use this anyways", then you see threads with hundreds of other users asking to please put the feature back and finally some bugzilla administrator locking the thread because "it's not the right place for this kind of discussions"...

I still miss vimperator and a few other XUL era add-ons by the way.

> As a European, this article is the degree of pretentious, market-driven, and stupid, that fits perfectly with the Economist.

Almost every time I read an article from The Economist I see that many of their arguments are founded on false premises which are (usually) trivial to fact-check. I really don't get why this publication gets posted here on HN so often.

pera··on Enabling Support for MathML in Chrome
I believe the parent means that MathJax uses MathML internally:

> MathJax uses MathML as the basis for its internal format for mathematical expressions, so MathML support is built into MathJax at a fundamental level.

I seems a requirement for accessibility.

pera··on WhatsApp to move ahead with privacy update despite backlash
WhatsApp users who in 2016 opted out of sharing data with third parties are now being asked by Facebook to either accept a privacy policy that states their metadata can be shared with third parties or stop chatting with friends and family through their app.

A poster bellow in this thread quoted a Wired article where some FB representative says they will "honor" the opt-out, yet this is not stated anywhere in the privacy policy as far as I can tell. I think it would be trivial for Facebook to make this clear in their new policy.

pera··on WhatsApp to move ahead with privacy update despite backlash
> WhatsApp will continue to honor that choice.

That's good news but I can't find this stated anywhere in their policy:

https://www.whatsapp.com/legal/updates/privacy-policy/?lang=...

It seems like an important thing to mention.

pera··on WhatsApp to move ahead with privacy update despite backlash
In 2016 WhatsApp let users opt-out of Facebook data sharing with third parties by just checking a box in Account Settings [1]. Most of my friends and family did opt-out. Now, as far as I understand, they are being "forced to opt-in" by accepting the new ToS and Privacy Policy or, otherwise, getting locked out.

pera··on The Drenching Richness of Andrei Tarkovsky
To me a boring movie is one that is mostly a constant flux of extremely predictable events with near zero content to analyze (e.g. a Marvel superhero movie). Tarkovsky is nothing like that, in fact I think his movies are the exact opposite of that.
pera··on Haskell: The Bad Parts, part 2 (2020)
