peppermint_tea··on We need to make adulthood more desirable
I have no idea what the author is talking about.

Life is what your make it. I just turn 40 and my life looks nothing like the description of adulthood the author does.

It is all about choices, if you decide to have a house, 2 cars and 2 kids, yes... it may look like that.

to control the releases of patches with a windows server update services (wsus)

so the you can test the patches and make sure it does not break user network connectivity

but yeah, I agree from the bandwidth perspective

peppermint_tea··on Ask HN: Should Instagram add labels indicating an image used filters?
can you try to replace "mentally weak user" by "gullible teenager"?

Although both are correct, one denote a blaming approach and the other one a more empathetic note.

peppermint_tea··on Ask HN: Should Instagram add labels indicating an image used filters?
So basically a trigger warning for our teenagers to manage their suicidal tendencies?

you're welcome

P.S : I agree with all the technical complications/impossibilities that comes with such an idea but the idea remains good.

peppermint_tea··on Ask HN: Cloudflare broke my domain's DNSSEC making it unreachable since 4 days
I'm with you here. I automated my dnssec setup, and I barely think about it.

I really wish my bank would use it and stop calling javascript from domains unknown to me :)

peppermint_tea··on You're Not Losing Fat Because You're Eating Too Damn Much (2016)
Yup, exactly this. I quit smoking multiple times and dieted one time (lost ~20 pounds).

You have to "hack" your brain into enjoying the unpleasant sensation like it is something good. Even if you feel like the world will end, nothing happens.

Doing other activities help indeed, but in order to do this, you sometimes need massive changes in your daily habits/lifestyle. I feel like these changes are the hard to maintain part since you are constantly fighting to do "the right thing" instead of "the pleasurable thing"

P.S : I still smoke & overeat

peppermint_tea··on Do You Need Web3?
well, at least, the answer given is encrypted in transit, so a potential MITM attacker won't know if I need web3 or not.

hurray for https everywhere... or else it is [big red warning] insecure.

Would be nice to have an page detailing how the spam algorithm of google is a blackbox and might put legit email to the spam folder... This page could be added to email signatures to reverse the trend... Why am I in spam? ask google/your email provider.

peppermint_tea··on Ask HN: What gives Cloudflare the right to takedown apps revealing site real IP?
There is a website currently publishing my (outdated) informations without my consent (old home address, current email, old phone number) and it is hiding behind cloudflare. I wrote to cloudflare months ago, and silence... So there can be many sides to that story here...

edit : oh and what the hell, name and shame https://www.reversecanada.com/ (and they have variants for other countries)

peppermint_tea··on GitHub Text of government takedown notices as received
I say full list or no list. Other than that, it sends the wrong message that "this country" is doing censorship and "this country" is not. No mention how they would deal with a National security letter (18 U.S.C. § 2709)

transparency for some countries but not others is not transparency.

I say they should take down this repo, or mention something about how they would deal with an NSL.

peppermint_tea··on Tell HN: Recruiters are lying about remote positions
yup, I have to bear with the bullshit. I love my daughter man.
peppermint_tea··on Why to care about privacy after years of sharing data
the internet is more than browsers and http, we have email, irc, sftp, torrents and lots of other cool stuff that I would hate to see centralized in the hands of a few private companies and serve to the masses with browser, mandatory https and google tag manager all in order to track people behaviors.

I feel like promoting alternatives is a better idea than participating in the creation of a dystopian future for the generations to come.

out of question for me to just "let it slide", we have too much to loose here

peppermint_tea··on YouTube cancelled my Nextcloud installation how-to
Although I see the parallel in the comparison with unions, I would say there is a difference in the fact that, for most people, youtube does not put bread on their tables.

I agree with you that it is unlikely that even a fraction of youtube audience make the switch. It is up to them.

> Other than important social issues, when has leaving things "up to the people" ever led to meaningful change?

I can only speak for myself here since "up to the people" means up to every single individual, not a collectivity. If youtube goes down tomorrow, I will have to find another source of music, that's all. I do not care if there is a meaningful change or not. And I totally agree that a video streaming platform is just a luxury...

peppermint_tea··on Show HN: I gamified a habit tracker to fight procrastination

peppermint_tea··on Show HN: I gamified a habit tracker to fight procrastination
I will not use it since I am already an organized person, but I absolutely love the default user name the author put in the login section.
peppermint_tea··on YouTube cancelled my Nextcloud installation how-to
Unlike some other comments, I do not think legislating once more on google is the answer.

I think it is up to the people to educate themselves, promote better alternatives to people they know and use it (audience drop WILL make google change it's ways) .

One of my geeky friend once told me "I am no longer sure if the internet going to the masses is a good thing"

EDIT : to clarify the comment above, I think internet is a wonderful tool, but by our choices/lack of actions, we allowed it to become what it is now.

peppermint_tea··on The takeover of America's legal system
The central subject is people refusing the statu quo of the current justicial system. The article does not assume that indeed, but reference to people that do (lawyers over 50 etc).

I stand behind my comment and loto-lawyer to illustrate how broken the system is until we find a better alternative.

your net worth should not have anything to do with "how much justice you can afford."

I have plenty of examples to back this up.

peppermint_tea··on The takeover of America's legal system
"are more important to more and more law students than due process, the presumption of innocence, and all the norms and values at the foundation of what we think of as the rule of law."

this assumes that there was due process, presumption of innocence and a "rule of law" to start with.

truth is, rich people can afford the best lawyer, poor people have to take a 10 years plea deal.

I gave a bit of thought into this and came out with a solution which is called "loto-lawyer" you spin the wheel, and you get what you get as a lawyer. As ridiculous as it may sound, it would be something closer to justice...

peppermint_tea··on Ask HN: Is Public WiFi Dangerous?
I would say it greatly depends on the the wifi, starbucks wifi and your local provider wifi setup greatly differs. Nowadays, scanning the network in starbucks won't show your neighbours, unlike the local coffee shop. Starbucks and the like use some commercial grade stuff to provide wifi.

source : I go in coffee shops and scan the networks.

peppermint_tea··on Send a text message about Ukraine to a random Russian mobile number
true, the heavy restriction on the free flow of information is new, people had time to form an opinion with access to different sources beforehand.
peppermint_tea··on Send a text message about Ukraine to a random Russian mobile number
thank you, I definitely agree that propaganda goes both way, and I am all in for being able to debate.

I really liked this video from lemonde.fr that adds a bit of historical context : https://www.lemonde.fr/international/video/2019/12/08/que-ve... (in french, but you can see the nato expansion through the years etc)

peppermint_tea··on Send a text message about Ukraine to a random Russian mobile number
I can agree there was warning sign, Putin complained about NATO expansion for nearly 15 years, but please provide better content.
peppermint_tea··on Send a text message about Ukraine to a random Russian mobile number
I am all in for listening to a different point of view, but the last link you provided is terrible.

in terms of logical fallacies, after 4 minutes of watching, there was The use of Bandwagon Fallacy and The Non Sequitur

please provide better content, this is HN.

peppermint_tea··on Send a text message about Ukraine to a random Russian mobile number
I think it is a great idea, but maybe we could all host independent proxies on out own dime and add the details to the text to let them bypass censorship, then they can select their news source as they see fit?

Just the translation of the text seems like a 3 year prison sentence for anyone that would act on it...

I would try : here is the "citizen of the world uncensored internet initiative"... then there is the risk the russian send similar messages and jail the people that act on it. anyone with an idea to overcome this is welcome.

EDIT : just read in another comment that links will trigger filtering. extra challenge :|
