pentagrama··on Google's shortened goo.gl links will stop working next month
Thank you for that information!

I wanted to help and did that using VMware.

For curious people, here is what the UI looks like, you have a list of projects to choose, I choose the goo.gl project, and a "Current project" tab which shows the project activity.

pentagrama··on QuakeNotch: Quake Terminal on your MacBook's notch
I was going to comment that the page video is a GIF and was going to be huge, around 10MB, but surprisingly is 4.28 MB. Still huge, I converted the GIF to MP4 with https://cloudconvert.com/gif-to-mp4 and is 575 KB and the quality is great. It should be more common just use <video> instead of a GIF for many cases.

I noticed that was a GIF because I have an extension to not autoplay GIFs [1], it is great to don't have to see moving stuff without consent. Actually, the extension can be better, I would prefer to have a play button to GIFs/see a "GIF" label on the image, now I have to change the setting of the extension and reload the page. I'm not a developer and try to do the extension with Claude but didn't work, if someone knows an extension with that feature let me know! I looked for it and can't find it, it may be a great opportunity to create one, devs!

pentagrama··on Ask HN: What Pocket alternatives did you move to?
I moved to https://raindrop.io/.

Imported all the Pocket stuff with no issues, free plan is enough for me.

pentagrama··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone (2022)
iPhone 13 Mini (2023) = 5.4 inches (discontinued).

Pixel 9 (2024) = 6.3 inches.

I know the Pixel 9 is not that small, but is close and an excellent phone (base or Pro models, the XL is bigger).

pentagrama··on Astro is a return to the fundamentals of the web
But it has a CMS? The author said that replaced WordPress sites with Astro, and on https://astro.build/ I see a comparison to WordPress.

Astro brings a friendly UI to maintain and update the sites? Like the WordPress panel and editor.

pentagrama··on Adding a feature because ChatGPT incorrectly thinks it exists
Well, I also learned that the developers of this tool are looking at the images their users upload.
pentagrama··on Couchers is officially out of beta
Have in mind that this project is not https://www.couchsurfing.com
pentagrama··on YouTube No Translation
Thanks for sharing this, this type of hostile behavior from YouTube is terrible, this should be opt in. I'm currently using YouTube Anti Translate [1], which is also open source [2]. Not sure if this one has some advantages, will check it out.

pentagrama··on Denmark Is Switching to Linux
> Looks like Denmark's Ministry for Digitization is not in fact moving to Linux right now. The original interview given by the Danish Ministry said that they planned to move to Linux, but this apparently was a misunderstanding between the Ministry and the outlet.

They've since corrected the article, they're moving to just LibreOffice, but not Linux, at least not in the near future.

pentagrama··on End of 10: Upgrade your old Windows 10 computer to Linux
This is great, but one UX issue I’ve always seen when trying to get regular Windows users to switch to Linux is the whole USB flash drive process and needing external tools like Rufus.

Take Ubuntu, for example. It’s one of the most popular and recommended distros for non-techy users, but just look at the install process: https://ubuntu.com/tutorials/install-ubuntu-desktop#1-overvi...

Let’s be honest, I don’t think most people would actually go through with that.

One idea to fix this and get more people to switch would be for Ubuntu to offer a Windows app that handles everything. It could download the ISO in the background, format the flash drive, install Ubuntu in dual boot with Windows by default, and clearly explain each step so users know how to start using Ubuntu or go back to Windows.

pentagrama··on Apple introduces a universal design across platforms
I need to experience it more to have a clear opinion, but looking at those videos, these types of translucent UI layers with a magnifying glass effect feel so annoying when they move; it's distracting.

Knowing that people will be spending hours of the day with these animations, it could be overwhelming. I'm not someone who suffers from videos or video games with photosensitive content warnings, but for many people, this might feel similar, like a friend of mine who can’t play Quake 3 Arena because it gives him nausea. I’m sure there will be an option to turn it off.

I also suspect that Apple, for marketing reasons, felt the need to present something visibly new and eye-catching. They probably turned to flashy design resources meant to impress rather than serve real usability needs. It feels more like a UI concept made for a sci-fi movie than something designed with accessibility and productivity in mind.

pentagrama··on Microsoft is starting to open Windows Update up to any third-party app
For non developers/advanced users that can use Winget/CL to update apps, I recommend the open source app UniGetUI [1], is actively maintained, it has a nice UI and works like a charm.

pentagrama··on Google is burying the web alive
A good strategy can involve betting on alternative distribution channels beyond search engines. Here are some ideas:

- Newsletters. You own your audience and your list is portable and interoperable.

- PWAs with push notifications. Be careful not to overwhelm users with too many messages. Make opt-out options easy to find.

- Door flyers with QR codes. A return to the basics that can still be effective.

- Social media. Still useful, but its reach and engagement seem to be declining.

pentagrama··on Coinbase says hackers bribed staff to steal customer data, demanding $20M ransom
Maybe it’s a naive question, but in many breach reports I see things like 'No passwords, private keys, or funds were exposed.' How come companies can usually protect that kind of data, but not emails, names, and other personal info?

pentagrama··on Create and edit images with Gemini 2.0 in preview
I want to take a step back and reflect on what this actually shows us. Look at the examples Google provides: it refers to the generated objects as "products", clearly pointing toward shopping or e-commerce use cases.

It seems like the real goal here, for Google and other AI companies, is a world flooded with endless AI-generated variants of objects that don’t even exist yet, crafted to be sold and marketed (probably by AI too) to hyper-targeted audiences. This feels like an incoming wave of "AI slop", mass-produced synthetic content, crashing against the small island of genuine human craftsmanship and real, existing objects.

pentagrama··on The Day Anubis Saved Our Websites from a DDoS Attack
Thanks for the information. Just to confirm, with the stock deployment it is not possible to remove the character, but there is an option to set the interface language for users? Spanish is supported?
pentagrama··on Show HN: I made a web-based, free alternative to Screen Studio
Seems cool! But for privacy reasons I prefer to do the recording locally and send the file myself. I've been using the extension https://cursorful.com/ (only for Chrome), which doesn't upload the video to the cloud, it just does everything locally, and the free tier features are enough for me.
pentagrama··on Local LLM inference – impressive but too hard to work with
Local LLM would be a great idea for Mozilla to try in its Orbit [1] extension to summarize articles. But sadly, they are only going with the cloud option (for now).

pentagrama··on Last Windows update creates C:\inetpub
For anyone else who didn’t know (like me):

> inetpub is a system folder on Windows that gets created when you install IIS (Internet Information Services) — which is Windows’ built-in web server.

pentagrama··on AnimeJs v4 Is Here
Wow, that homepage was one of the more complex and layer filled interactive animations that I ever seen running so smoothly on a mobile browser. Those FPS feel like a Doom 2016 on a beefy PC.
pentagrama··on Matrix.org Will Migrate to MAS
You're absolutely right. End-to-end encryption protects message content, but WhatsApp still collects metadata, which is incredibly valuable.

Even though they can't read your messages, they know who you talk to, how often, when, and for how long. They also track your device info, IP address (which can reveal your location), network details, and app usage patterns.

And this data isn’t just sitting there—Meta uses it. For example, if you chat with a business on WhatsApp, you might start seeing ads for that business on Instagram or Facebook. They don’t need to read your messages when they can infer so much just from how you use the app.

pentagrama··on Self-Hosting like it's 2025
As a non-developer, I find it difficult to step into the self-hosting world. What I recommend for people like me is the service PikaPods [1], which takes care of the hard part of self-hosting.

I have now switched from some SaaS products to self-hosted alternatives:

- Feed reader: Feedly to FreshRSS.

- Photo management/repository: Google Photos to Imich or Imgich (don't remember).

- Bookmarks: Mozilla's Pocket to Hoarder.

And so far, my experience has been simple and awesome!

pentagrama··on Honey has now lost 4M Chrome users after shady tactics were revealed
This represents a 20% reduction in its Chrome user base (20 to 16 million users).
pentagrama··on Windows 11 is closing a loophole that let you skip making a Microsoft account
Ok and some questions.

You can create a Microsoft account with an alias/temp email and fake data? Or phone verification is required?

And later remove the Microsoft account from the system and switch to a local account?

pentagrama··on Apple rearranged its XNU kernel with exclaves
Reading this, a bit off-topic and odd software-building-related question came to my mind: Between building and maintaining macOS + iOS vs. building and maintaining Chromium > Chrome, which do you think is more complex, requires more developer hours, and demands more advanced developer skills?
pentagrama··on Made a scroll bar buddy that walks down the page when you scroll
Thank you for your question, it was thought provoking.

Many things brought me here. One of them is that I’m a UX designer, and I like to stay in the loop with my dev friends—not just to build better products together but also to have interesting conversations.

I also have a lot of respect for development because I deeply value that knowledge. In a way, this aligns with a philosophical idea: understanding and respecting different fields of knowledge helps us grow and build better things together. As Montaigne suggested in his Essays, true wisdom comes from embracing our limitations and staying open to learning. I find it exciting to discover new things, knowing that there will always be more to explore.

pentagrama··on Made a scroll bar buddy that walks down the page when you scroll
This is funny and clever.

If I were a developer, I would make a version where, when the stick figure moves backward as you scroll up, it does the moonwalk.
