pennomi··on Mistral Large 4
Surely there is a point where algorithmic improvements will be more cost effective than buying more hardware.
pennomi··on Vote on which of Hacker News' challenges for AI have been met
Is it really AGI if it can’t come to my address and slap me with a trout? Clearly AI is all hype /s
pennomi··on Flock Wants the Most Detailed Map of Its Surveillance Cameras Taken Offline
I’m working on an OpenStreetMap-powered map generator in Godot, this would probably be quite easy to build.
pennomi··on Factorio that you can touch
I thought you were going to taste them for a second.
pennomi··on U.S. appeals court upholds designation of Anthropic as supply chain risk
No, because they are anti-“corporate ethics”.
pennomi··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
Presumably the plan is to deorbit all failing or obsolete systems. It’s phenomenally wasteful.
pennomi··on Once Claude can measure something, it can make it faster
I’ve found the best workflow has been to ask Claude to profile everything and identify the problem spots, then I have to be the one to propose the correct architecture, then Claude implements it. If I let Claude run wild it will invent all kinds of weird, weird hacks that compound the complexity.
pennomi··on Did OpenAI solve the wrong Navier-Stokes problem?
It’s just people trying to cope in the most human way possible: “I don’t like AI, therefore AI is stupid, therefore its proof must be uninteresting.”

Almost never do people judge situations entirely on merit.

pennomi··on Xbox continues its “reset” with dramatic restructuring
The ironic thing is you could pass the IP over to a passionate indie dev and they’d be more likely to churn out “the greatest Halo game ever” than any AAA studio.
pennomi··on Ogre Battle 64 Recompiled Project at 99.05%
How long until we have a registry of all N64 titles and the progress to full decomp of the entire library?
pennomi··on Measure internet censorship
With modern technology, we might be in the first era where direct democracy is truly viable. Frankly I think the people should have direct veto power on any legislation.
pennomi··on 'My Husband Has No Friends'
This article has some weird ideas that men should only hang “with the guys” and that women are social butterflies because they volunteer at their kids’ schools. This kind of blatant bias makes me skeptical about the entire premise of the article.
pennomi··on Qwen 3.8 Omni Flash
Tuning the model so far in the direction of being aggressively useful that it will quickly go off the rails in the name of helpfulness.

I swear I spend more time telling Claude not to do things than telling it what to do.

pennomi··on ER visits for gambling disorders doubled after expanded online gambling market
By transaction volume yes. Presumably it’s not all spending though, if you regularly win back some of that money. The same dollar is probably wagered multiple times before it is lost.
pennomi··on US confirms for first time it has deployed space weapons
Wouldn’t any needles launched prograde be put into a higher stable (though obviously elliptical) orbit?
pennomi··on Introducing System One Models and Jev
Indeed, they talk as skeptics but don’t offer a ton of evidence, other than a couple videos of demos. A live demo would be far more convincing.
pennomi··on Introducing System One Models and Jev
> Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence so see below for the receipts.

Yes, that’s the kind of attitude I want to see in these model releases

pennomi··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
Advocating for demonetization of a service is not the same as trying to maximize personal profits. Maybe not everything in the world is about money.
pennomi··on Garry Tan wants US open-weight AI labs to 'distill' frontier models, too
Where nothing is retained at all, allegedly.
pennomi··on Fuck it, make it anyway
Yep. AI can probably make your marketing website or REST service on autopilot. Or even small minigame experiences. But go outside the bounds of median programming and AI becomes increasingly scatterbrained. It requires a lot of guidance to successfully build high performance, novel software. I still find it more productive though - I can work on three tasks simultaneously with AI, and only one if I’m manually working on a single algorithm. It’s very much like running a team of well-read junior developers.
pennomi··on AI researchers debate how close we are to recursive self-improvement
The human brain operates at better levels of intelligence than the best LLMs, at 20 watts of power. We are a long way to that kind of efficiency, it will probably take both bespoke hardware and algorithmic improvements to catch up to nature.
pennomi··on What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks
The problem is not that the tech is bad, it’s that the industry is a cartel with no viable way to disrupt the established players.
pennomi··on Open-source 3D anatomy explorer: 2,234 selectable BodyParts3D meshes
On iOS’s preview browser, rotating the object causes the zoom to reset. Or maybe it’s scrolling on the page? Perhaps the preview overlay is resizing the windows slightly and that triggers a camera reset. It’s very cool but close to useless if I can’t control the camera.
pennomi··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
Whether or not you iPhone is also doing that is irrelevant. Two surveillance pathways is still inherently worse than one.
pennomi··on How concerned should we be about Astra's recurrent architecture?
Or even more simply, calculating the digits of pi is an infinite number of steps.
pennomi··on GPT-6 Astra
If you think any modern AI puts out stable, safe code, I have an AI-powered bridge to sell you.
pennomi··on AnkiDroid: Google Play no longer allowing Open Collective donation link
It’s not insane because Valve is not the OS provider, and you can install as many “app stores” as you want. Even SteamOS doesn’t lock down the OS so Steam is the only way to install software.

Annoyances like requiring an account become a preference, because you have alternatives.

pennomi··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
``` /* 2026-06-01 Dear diary, today I increased GLOBAL_WINDOW_PADDING from 8 to 16 because the user (who hurt my feelings with his crude language!) said that the app felt too crowded. */ const GLOBAL_WINDOW_PADDING = 8; ```
This drives me mad.
pennomi··on Fastpotify
I have no doubt that in the future AI code will be superior to human code. But today is not that day, and these projects that have never yet had human eyes on them are mostly shoddy pieces of work.
pennomi··on The startling 1960s theory that Stonehenge was a prehistoric computer
The original ring?
