penjelly··on Elon Musk's DOGE team may need a crash course in COBOL
Twitter revenue is down 48% since musk acquisition, also due to interest and other costs they operated at a net loss in 2024, Not a profit. Who is really choosing what they want to believe?
penjelly··on OpenAI's GPT-5 Bait and Switch
the model names are confusing and meaningless to me.
penjelly··on Tesla Cybertruck Drives Itself into a Pole, Owner Says 'Thank You Tesla'
inb4 autonomous only zones in cities
penjelly··on Firing programmers for AI will destroy everything
I've switched sides on this issue. I do think LLMs will reduce headcount across tech. Smaller teams will take on more features and less code will be written by hand. It'll be easier to run a startup, freelance or experiment with projects.
penjelly··on Musk-led group makes $97B bid for control of OpenAI
sales were trending down significantly in Europe even before the salute though.
penjelly··on To buy a Tesla Model 3, only to end up in hell
it's a known problem with 2024 models, the article points to that. So while tesla may be aware of it, the public unconscious might not be (like the author wasn't), as its a new-ish, and frankly absurd problem to have.
penjelly··on Microplastics in the human brain
> These particles can include synthetic rubber, plastics, carbon black, and trace metals (like zinc)

you're correct. I mistakenly thought it was only carbon coming off the tires. So yeah, EVs have a significantly lower carbon output that ICE vehicles. My point still stands but thanks for the callout.

penjelly··on Microplastics in the human brain
trams were popular in tons of places before, I understand they improved traffic significantly compared even to today, and they'd still have a positive effect now, I think. But most places shifted towards a car centric focus and we lost those.
penjelly··on Microplastics in the human brain
EV/hybrid only "zones" in Europe are crazy to me because the electric cars leech more tire carbon into the air anyway. Some regulation seems intelligent on the surface, but the devil is in the details.
penjelly··on Why Is Warner Brothers Discovery Dumping Old Movies On YouTube?
people talking about ad revenue... It feels more like a reputational play, ie: throw some free movies out with the WBD logo, more people recognize the brand strength of WBD, then subscribe to Max. Though the selection is small and the movies don't look very good at a glance..
penjelly··on Science YouTuber physicsgirl (Dianna Cowern) stands for the first time in 2 yrs
100%. it took me years to consider gluten/lactose as the root cause, because I'd been eating them for years and definitely never almost suffocated like the symptoms it causes now for me now.
penjelly··on Science YouTuber physicsgirl (Dianna Cowern) stands for the first time in 2 yrs
that didn't work for me. It helped in the moment but didn't address the underlying problem.
penjelly··on Science YouTuber physicsgirl (Dianna Cowern) stands for the first time in 2 yrs
take a flashlight to your nostrils in a dark room with a mirror, are they inflamed? It could be reflux/silent reflux like I have, gases inflame the sinuses, then it's hard to breathe.
penjelly··on Science YouTuber physicsgirl (Dianna Cowern) stands for the first time in 2 yrs
Hi, I couldn't glean from the articles. But it sounds like you have breathing issues from long covid? it may sound ridiculous, but I developed gluten/lactose sensitivity during covid times. If I avoid gluten, lactose, canola oil I get far fewer symptoms. I know this likely isn't your issue but I do experience positive airway pressure, coughing, burping, chronic fatigue, exessive yawning. If that sounds like you maybe a dietary intolerance could be worth checking. For what it's worth, no doctors could diagnose me, they thought I had heartburn or "its in your head". It wasn't, cutting those things out did actually help enormously.
penjelly··on About availability of TikTok and ByteDance Ltd. apps in the United States
me, Canadian, open tiktok for the first time in months and the 2nd reel is Canada vs US war & how China will help Canada. No way you can convince me this isn't a propaganda machine.
penjelly··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline
> Don't we need to have a pretty low opinion of the average american cognitive skill to feel the need to protect them from foreign propaganda for fear it would take a hold on them

that's naive. Literally leaving CNN on in your living room 3 days a week will eventually change you opinions. Our minds absorb things we hear repetitively, even if we now they might be half truths or lies.

penjelly··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline
it's not just about data harvesting, it's about propaganda as well, and no, you can't "just buy" as much data as tiktok gathers on people, tiktok most likely has some of the richest data gathered from users, because they can get away with it.
penjelly··on Starship Flight 7
launching a rocket is far more analogulous to shipping a release, than it is running code.
penjelly··on General Motors Is Banned from Selling Driving Behavior Data for 5 Years
many cars now have a TPU, used for connectivity and GPS, which will send telematics data when you start and stop the car. This tracking is not typically easy or possible to opt out of, in my experience.
penjelly··on TikTok preparing for U.S. shut-off on Sunday
it's been said many times, it's a national security risk, and it is very obviously one. Tiktok has already gone against the wishes of the US, there's evidence Chinese engineers accessed Tiktok data hosted in the US (related: project Texas). It's so easy to sway public opinion when you own the largest megaphone to the people... That's literally what's happening right now on tiktok.
penjelly··on I deleted my social media accounts
Don't agree with author, but related to the desire to delete social media... I've noticed Instagram has been adding more features to bait time from users. A new one being, if you wait long enough on a given reel, it'll suggest you posts your follows liked (or commented on) in the top right corner. This is super creepy and I imagine could be easily gamed by stalkers. These types of features that try to engage me even deeper have made me consider actually removing IG altogether like I deleted Facebook a long time ago
penjelly··on [dead]
my understanding is that whenever new products at big tech are made, they throw a bunch of MBAs at it to try to monetize/extract any value. If that is the case, it makes sense that innovation slows down as the engineers arent steering
penjelly··on [dead]
I agree with Marks take on the iPhone/android bubble debacle. Apple deserves to be called out the way he describes, they "bullied" non-iphone users under the guise of "security".
penjelly··on Show HN: Does your food have gluten?
I suspect I have this problem too, any chance you could describe your symptoms a bit? I get digestive issues but no heartburn, and then my airways get inflamed..

I switched to almost exclusively veggies, meats, and gluten substitutes. I feel significantly better, but still struggle

penjelly··on Tesla reports 1.1% sales drop for 2024, first annual decline in at least 9 years
the "dark MAGA" bit was very unusual, not sure what musk was thinking there
penjelly··on A Tesla Cybertruck 'blew up' outside Trump's hotel in Las Vegas
yes, and it looks like this would be a scenario where the battery is totaled (unless fireworks?), which means doors are locked shut from inside and outside.
penjelly··on A Tesla Cybertruck 'blew up' outside Trump's hotel in Las Vegas
the image in the article is a truck completely engulfed in flames, I'm not sure how you can deduce "not thermal runaway" by that. edit: I see the video now, I see your point
penjelly··on A Tesla Cybertruck 'blew up' outside Trump's hotel in Las Vegas
I want to know more too. My understanding is these vehicles will only light on fire like this if the battery experiences thermal runaway, which means the battery is toast at that point I would imagine? I've heard when the battery goes in a model 3, the doors don't work normally and you need an emergency release. That said, 1 dead 7 injured... I imagine there was more than one in the vehicle?
penjelly··on Nvidia bets on robotics to drive future growth
funny I landed on this idea myself but ended up thinking it had no value
penjelly··on Tesla replaced laid off US workers using H-1B visas
they might own tesla stock.
