penjelly··on Tesla Must Face Claims It Misled Buyers About Autopilot and Self-Driving
about time, I remember "it would be financially insane to buy anything other than a tesla" and "your tesla will make you 30k per year while you dont use it" and I idolized musk in those days so I ate it up... thankfully I ended up buying a different car in the end.
penjelly··on McDonald's and other food giants hit hard by inflation
in canada theyve gone full gimmick, the previously dollar menu, is now like 3$, they wont let you combo these items anymore either so youre forced to pay like 3-4$ more dollars for fries and 2$ for the drink if you combo it yourself.

that and they introduce a new nugget sauce and charge an extra 5$ because its limited edition

penjelly··on Neuralink Prime Study Progress Update – User Experience
notably he said this... "Dr. Rapaport continued to explain on the podcast that this method has one big drawback. It causes “some amount of brain damage when they’re inserted to the brain.” That, of course, is less than ideal. And Rapaport says he believed it was possible, “to extract information-rich data from the brain without damaging the brain.”
penjelly··on What Elon Musk's favorite game tells us about him
is there a paid expansion? I played it for like 2 days and felt like i ran out of depth immediately.
penjelly··on Ontario family doctor says new AI notetaking saved her job
im from Ontario and see resident physicians regularly. The problem isnt that they dont have time to take notes.. its that they dont have time period. The first thing the supervisor doctor will say to me when theyre invited in is "i havent got much time...". Most likely your diagnosis goes like this, you describe symptoms, resident doctor disappears to the supervising doctor and returns with an action. Usually no longterm plan is given, just a medication or recommendation. Its hard to negotiate the action because youre negotiating with the resident, but the decision is authorized by the supervisor. The problem is systemic and automatic note taking isnt going to solve it. Despite this success story for the doctor, I suspect the patients themselves wont have the same success in Ontario.
penjelly··on Tesla conducting more layoffs, including entire Supercharger team
that felt like a pump to me. Those shareholders are in deep, easier to pump a bad earnings up instead of pulling their entire tesla portfolio imo
penjelly··on Tesla conducting more layoffs, including entire Supercharger team
This notion is ridiculous to me everytime I hear it. How can we objectively measure that its safer? It feels way too easy to miss an externality and just chalk that up to teslas mile per mile being safer on a technicality
penjelly··on Tesla Is Pulling Back from EV Charging, and People Are Freaking Out
saw a video the other day where plaid was used after 45k miles and i was 0.7 seconds slower than the advertised sale 0-60. If thats true, and it continues i imagine plaid drivers will be pissed
penjelly··on The Vision Pro is a flop
had they tried VR before at all? the wow factor isnt exclusive to the AVP
penjelly··on Predicted 25% Drop in Search Volume Remains Unclear
notable: meta has put an AI assistant in insta search bar recently
penjelly··on NHTSA Tesla Report (2024) [pdf]
what might be an acceptable solution here? just curious
penjelly··on The Vision Pro is a flop
did you research before typing this? there were definitely third parties at launch https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2024/02/apple-announces-more-... Max and Disney were available day 1.
penjelly··on The Vision Pro is a flop
iphone sold 6.1m units in 2007 when it launched, there was initial skepticism but they never downgraded their manufacturing because demand was too low. In contrast Vision pro is expected to sell 450k units this year. https://medium.com/@mingchikuo/apple-cuts-2024-2025-vision-p...

AVP is cool, but it suffers from a lot of the same problems as traditional VR. Im happy we have it as a devkit available to us

penjelly··on British Columbia to recriminalize use of drugs in public spaces
> On the one hand, we are saying the drugs are not harmful enough to criminalize

i dont think thats it. one of the main arguments is that people will do the drugs anyway legal or no. But if they get/do them illegally they'll be afraid to seek help when ODing or trying to quit, and they have nowhere safe to do them so they do them anywhere and everywhere. This explains why we both decriminalize and rehab

penjelly··on Why I doubt that AI can match the human mind
i dont think LLMs in their current state are anything like the human mind. They need the ability to have multiple thoughts ongoing, background thoughts, planning... right now LLMs are a little like snap responses answering questions, the type you give without thinking, like intuition. Which can very easily fall outside the bounds of an acceptable answer
penjelly··on Meta.ai Oh My
> Foundation LLMs are generative models trained to produce text similar to the text on which they were trained (or for the pedantic: minimize perplexity).

They are not trained to output facts or truths or any other specific kind of text

but we can just patch the truth in with RLHF! /s

penjelly··on To Build Muscle, It's the Sets That Count
its way more than an edge imo. You get bigger/stronger faster, regenerate faster, have more libido and energy. All of those affect ones motivation to workout
penjelly··on I "Blitzed" 50 Books in 50 Days – My Experiment in Language Learning
> you understand the language well enough to comprehend the meaning of sentences, I don't think having the text in front of you is adding much. Unless you just really struggle with listening comprehension.

disagree. from what i experience, some of the most helpful parts of reading are when you stop and take a minute to ponder the words, or write it in the side column. Thats the main downside to audiobooks imo, you dont have time to stop and think. That applies whether you just use audiobook or audiobook + reading text, but not in the caze of just reading.

penjelly··on Silicon Valley's vision for AI? It's religion, repackaged
ive noticed you have to worship it like a religion these days, look at iphones versus android based phones. Adults literally ridicule eachother in public for having android. The future might be a lot like Foundation by Isaac Asimov where nobody understands technology and everyone worships and relies on it.
penjelly··on Apple Researchers Reveal New AI System That Can Beat GPT-4
isnt this like that Rabbit product released earlier they called the LAM large action model?
penjelly··on Low Cost Robot Arm
that is because they run in a very different environment than an RC-size car in your living room would
penjelly··on Facebook Accused of Using Your Phone to Wiretap Snapchat
which part?

> Thus, Project Ghostbusters was born. It’s Meta’s in-house wiretapping tool to spy on data analytics from Snapchat starting in 2016, later used on YouTube and Amazon. This involved creating “kits” that can be installed on iOS and Android devices, to intercept traffic for certain apps, according to the filings. This was described as a “man-in-the-middle” approach to get data on Facebook’s rivals, but users of Onavo were the “men in the middle.”

penjelly··on The lifetime tooth decay vaccine is now available (in Honduras)
super interesting but seems risky
penjelly··on Fans quitting Spotify to save their love of music (2022)
i disagree. Some of the new features are welcome imo. for ex: daylist and now searches can find songs by lyrics
penjelly··on Fans quitting Spotify to save their love of music (2022)
not upload... but spotify allows you to hookup a folder of local music last i checked.
penjelly··on Study puts fermented foods, not fire, as pivotal moment in human brain growth
fermented foods/beverages are more acidic and therefore should aid with digestion. In ancient Mesopotamia they drank beer with most meals, what if that wasnt only because it was safer than water, but also aided you to digest the foods you did eat, faster?
penjelly··on Figure 01 robot demos its OpenAI integration
demod this. The ability to interrupt the language model is very cool, However, i notice, it failed to move onto the next slide often. It could never get to the final slide without explicit mention to go there, and when i got to the last slide, i asked to go back to the first slide, it would say "ok lets go to the last slide" everytime, these are probably more control issues than language model issues but i thought id point them out, just in case.
penjelly··on Roku data breach: Over 15k accounts affected
not legal, but yes theyll probably get sued for this.
penjelly··on Tesla starts shipping $3k Cybertruck tent, looks nothing like what was unveiled
most importantly, self driving is not done and in Elons own words its what makes the company worth billions or next to nothing. Just because Elon says hes an engineer doesnt mean its true.
penjelly··on Uber Eats starts robot deliveries in Tokyo
they already do to a limited degree anyway https://youtu.be/d7eRafWqqRg?si=oqfvSj7qxerBiUFG
