penguinlinux··on Ask HN: Is company 'culture' bullshit?
I work for a company here in New York and company culture is very important. We define company culture with our brand, and also the people that work here. Everyone is nice and everyone is engaged and you could say that we make an effort to hire really nice people. Everyone here is respectful and you feel like you are coming to see your friends are work. We celebrate work anniversaries and the company is always streaming social media pictures, tweets about what is going on at headquarters. Today for example one person here does a snapchat takeover and we record ourselves and post what life is like at HQ. I am a shy person so it is a little difficult for me to be this open and social but the people here are nice and mean well so it is ok. I love this place and it is one of the best places i've ever worked. :) so in other words this place is only great because they built a culture here and it is working for them.
penguinlinux··on Ask HN: How to handle staging environments?
you can use an instance that has docker on it, then setup docker compose files with wordpress, git , apache and setup a port. then on the machine setup virtualhost to point to the entry tcp port of the docker instance. then all you have to do is build the docker instances . You can mantaint all that with git and handle all of your deployments that way.
penguinlinux··on Ask HN: What's the best way to leave a new job
thank you for your advice.
penguinlinux··on Ask HN: What's the best way to leave a new job
Thanks for the advice. I believe in following my heart and just feel bad I wasted their time this 3 months but basically i felt i had my hands handcuffed as I could not really do much

thank you

penguinlinux··on Ask HN: How many servers do you manage?
last job 90 servers in different environments. Everything was managed via ansible. Once you have everything automated it it is a breeze to support and environment.
penguinlinux··on So you seriously are crazy about star wars?
this was a great movie just like there are other great movies. All i can say is that I really enjoyed it and it was worth going to the movies to see the movie. :)
penguinlinux··on Ask HN: Do you like code pairing interviews? I hate them
What made it frustrating is that I am the type of person who likes to have my dev environment setup for coding, I also work in linux and not on a mac. I am also a quiet type of guy who codes best when I am sitting on my own. I do work with my team very well but I feel weird when people are watching over my shoulder. The funny thing is that I went to a second interview at a company that is doing interesting things with biometrics and large scale problems and their approach was to ask me lots of interesting questions about how i handled scaling, how to debug performance, optimzing queries, log analysis. I am a senior engineer with years of experience and these guys were very smart, at the end of the interview their HR person came and said the team loved me and would like to extend an offer. My jaw dropped. I came from a really bad interview to a place where they are doing more advanced stuff and I got the job. I thank them so much because I felt they gave me a fair chance to get to know me. :)
penguinlinux··on Ask HN: I don't know how to launch; I'm scared to. How do I follow through?
If you have all the code ( product ) why don't you launch ? what is your biggest fear. you already did a lot of the work don't be afraid to fail. if you fail you will fail fast and that is good. Don't be afraid of failure embrace it.
penguinlinux··on Ask HN: What are your unused domain names and how much would you sell them for?
penguinlinux.com :)
penguinlinux··on Ask HN: How can we fight the pesticide issue in my state
there are a lot of sites online that can show you how to remove pesticides from vegetables. http://food.ndtv.com/food-drinks/simple-tricks-to-remove-pes... but I am sure it won't remove all of them but you can try some of these tips.
penguinlinux··on Ask HN: Should I buy an external display?
you can use an hdmi monitor won't have to spend too much
penguinlinux··on Ask HN: Does DevOps have a future?
I don't see why there is negativity against devops. I live in New York and it is hard to fill this role. I get job offers all the time and the market is hot in New York and California.

expect salaries around 150K to 190K if you are a good Admin who transitioned to devops. :) times are great.

penguinlinux··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (August 2015)
Location: New York Remote: Not now Relocation: No Technologies. I am a DevOps engineer with time to work on consulting gigs. I have worked in large infrastructures dealing with high traffic sites with millions of users, lots of caching, load balancing and database optimizations. I've solved a lot of conflicts dealing with process by introducing best principles for local development, testing environments, continuous deployments, provisioning and configuration of application servers using Ansible and AWS CLI, configured AWS autoscaling, load balancers, AWS VPC's. Also if anyone is interested in support for their hadoop environment or planning to use Hadoop, Storm, kafka in their environment I can help with that too. Thanks for reading.

penguinlinux··on Ask HN: How would you fire a cofounder, when you aren’t one?
I will be honest, there was a reason why the cofounder picked this guy maybe he is all over his head but is he malicious , can he do other things better, maybe he needs a little more coaching or a good talk but you don't try to find a solution other than you get irritated by this guy, you might be great but we all bring different skills to the table. It is not your business to get this guy fired really, you don't know if he has a family or needs that money. You come across as envious. sorry :(
penguinlinux··on What is your VM workflow?
we use virtualbox and a bare template Ubuntu image. the workflow is like this.

developer installs virtualbox and downloads the small image to this laptop. Then the developers does a git pull of our Ansible code, the Ansible code contains a subdirectory with shell scripts that can create headless virtualmachines for any of our application stacks. Then he does an ansible run against this new machine and Ansible will provision a full instance running our stack on this new dev environment

Python + MySQL Kafka/ Flume Mongodb Hadoop

basically the developer can have a full stack running on his machine and it is not slow. Most machines have 16Gigs of memory and lots of cpu power so we haven't had anyone complain that things are slow. Developers can create or destroy environments and they know they can rebuild them locally.

We tried doing this with docker and got it working but it was actually slower in docker and don't get me started using docker on the mac. the devs hated it and love ansible better

penguinlinux··on Goodbye?
don't kill yourself. You are at a crossroad right now, could you elaborate more. Sometimes suicide is the only solution but your mind is not seeing other alternatives, can you let me know what is troubling you that you can't find an alternative other than suicide. Your life is precious so please let us try to give you alternatives.
penguinlinux··on Ask HN: Has someone automated best practices for AWS?
Ansible has plenty of cloud modules for AWS. you can describe your whole AWS environment from VPC , Security Groups, Routing tables, etc. You might not be able to find everything but you can also use the AWS Cli to handle IAM roles and user permissions. You have to use a mix of both Ansible and plain AWS Cli to achieve your goal.
penguinlinux··on Ask HN: A Microsoft engineer is hoping to hear your devops pains
Hello and Thanks for reaching out to the Dev and Operations community. I am a devops engineer who is very familiar with Amazon AWS, Backspace Cloud and Google Compute Engine. Is there a way that we can get free trials of Amazon azure. AWS provides you with free credits for a year to run a few services and try their APIs and also try their services. This has been useful because it allowed me to learn about their products without having to pay for them. Then I have been able to use my knowledge and promote AWS service at companies I have worked and pay for AWS.

Is there such a resource with Microsoft Azure?

Thanks

penguinlinux··on Ask HN: Do you use a Chromebook for dev? What is your toolchain?
I use the same setup XFCE on my Samsung chromebook. I code python on my machine but for things that won't run ARM I have a Mac Mini that has virtual box where I run headless virtual machines. I can reach my server from anywhere using OpenVPN as it is hooked to my home router and use dynamic DNS to reach the OpenVPN server. I am testing lots of projects with that setup. I use Docker, Ansible, Cloudier Hadoop and other projects :) my own private cloud server.
penguinlinux··on Ask HN: 2 weeks to save the business you spent 4 years on
What is the company URL ?
penguinlinux··on Ask HN: I am QA, How do I learn to code?
Obey The Testing Goat!. Get yourself the book Test-Driven Development with Python. It will turn you into a an automated testing wizard. it is a great book and you will learn in no time how to run your automated tests. Then learn Docker and be amazed on how you can use Docker + Jenkins to do automated testing. You will be a God among the QA team and the devs will have lots of respect for you.

penguinlinux··on Ask HN: New job is having me switch from Linux to Mac – how do I cope?
Hi There, I work at a startup and we all get Mac Latops, I installed VirtualBox and allocated 100Gigs and 4G of Ram to a Linux Mint virtual machine on my Mac OSX instance and it works great. I get so use all the features of the mac and I can do all my work on my linux machine. You shouldn't have a problem if you use a virtual machine.

Good luck in your new job.

penguinlinux··on Ask HN: My Linux server was hacked
did your server had any type of website running ? such as open source projects installed ? any services or ports running and available to the outside world. Did you have a website running with code you wrote?

Out of the box a fresh ubuntu server is pretty secure so you had to install something that exposed some type exploitable code and that's how they got access to your machine.

penguinlinux··on What are your favorite movies of all time?
the original lord of the rings trilogy
penguinlinux··on The Raspberry Pi
I love my raspberry pi. I turned an old vga lcd into a full computer attaching the rasbperry pi to the back with double sided velcro tape and now i have a workstation where I do most of my development.

Great thing is that because watching youtube and playing videos is not so great on the raspberry pi and heavy websites do not look great, I find that am not getting as distracted as I used to be when i was working on a full media capable computer.

:) I am being more productire.

penguinlinux··on Ask HN: Do you ever want to work on something greater than your job?
that's the reason that keeps me working. I just focus on making sure my family is happy and taken care. Maybe one day when i retire i can get involved in more things that will actually will make a difference on other people's lives. I will try some volunteering this summer.
