This is how you devalue science
pencilcode··on A Beginner’s Introduction to Python Web Frameworks (2018)
Without going asyncio you can always use greenlets and get the same benefits. Using uwsgi with gevent makes it easy.
pencilcode··on Viral “Manspreading” video is said to be staged Russian propaganda
She did but she's no longer the issue. And in voting against Hillary, people voted for Trump, a worse alternative - morally corrupt. People fight over whether Hillary was really corrupt or not, with Trump that's not the issue. We know he's a compulsive liar, exaggerator, we know that he's mean and petty and vain and that all he cares about are his name/brand and how many millions he has in his bank account. This is not a guy who'll fight for the masses, me or you, this a guy who'll fight to keep himself and his friends rich and makes no apologies for that. So not being a Clinton but being a Trump is not better, it's so much worse. It's the same in Brasil, voting against PT, Bolsonaro might be president, but he's so much worse. Despite absolutely hating someone you still have to keep your eyes open to what the alternatives are and if they're worse or better. Or you might end up with someone that'll make you more worse off.

And that's how the public is duped into voting for incompetent corrupt, but manly!, politicians who promise they'll put things back in order!! Seed rage and you'll get politicians like Orban (Hungary), Bolsonaro (Brazil, on his way to power), and Trump. All Putin lookalikes who have their own oligarchies (call them friends) and everyone else is f*ed poor. And that is how nations/systems fail.
pencilcode··on Fulfill: Safer, more cosmopolitan string interpolation
More cosmopolitan?
pencilcode··on Growing from 0 to 4M users on our fashion app with vertical machine learning
What is the current state of the art for finding similar images? Is it auto-encoders nn's, convnets and then just use some sort of distance measure?
pencilcode··on Stats without Tears (2016)
Although old, I really like Principles of Statistics by Bulmer. Duke’s MOOC is pretty good btw.
pencilcode··on A Guide to Natural Language Processing
Regarding finding similar documents what is the state of the art nowadays, LDA, word2vec, something else? What do you normally use?
pencilcode··on RSS: there's nothing better
I use reeder as the client, much better than feedly ‘s ui but feedly is still the backend. Working great since I came back to rss for about a year.
pencilcode··on Introduction to Statistics using NumPy
Where did you get the dataset from? Adding a link to the source would be nice
pencilcode··on De-Anonymizing Programmers via Code Stylometry (2015) [pdf]
Do you guys know any good resources on stylometry?
pencilcode··on Ellen Pao: My lawsuit failed. Others won’t
Just to nitpick an issue that some people mix up. On average more interest does not equate on average more skilled within the interested population. Also this gender diff does not play out so starkly in other sciences, eg biology, physics, etc. And, some decades ago in the west, and currently in other countries/civilizations, this gender difference does not pan out. This seems to point to other factors beyond genetic differences.

pencilcode··on Analysis of 3B Reddit comments shows the alt-right is getting stronger
That is actually mentioned in the article, that people use it now (cuck) to mock the alt right members
pencilcode··on Ask HN: What software do you use to take notes?
Vim + vimwiki for notes that deserve to last. These are saved in bitbucket private repo. Per project also have a single markdown file inside the project's directory with dashes and crosses for tasks.
pencilcode··on Ask HN: What are some good technology blogs to follow?
Feedly as a backend to Reeder 3 (paid). Don't like Feedly interface so opted instead for Reeder, much better experience IMHO
pencilcode··on VimWiki – A personal wiki for Vim
I've been using vimwiki for years - it's been an absolute life-saver - but had no idea it now supported markdown. Any one know of a tool to convert vimwiki syntax to markdown or can i just use markdown in new files and keep vimwiki in the old files?
pencilcode··on Leonard Cohen Has Died
About a week ago commented with a friend of mine his last album was absolutely wonderful and how awesome that he was 80 years old and still creating with the quality that he was. He was the musician that touched the most, others I sort of grew out of but always came back to Leonard - I suspect that there hasn't been a month in the last 15 years where I haven't listened to him. As an aside also discovered Irving Layton, a poet, through him.
pencilcode··on Ask HN: To those who became fluent in a second language, what did you do?
I'm not fluent yet but after using duolingo for a few years (with varying degrees of commitment) I've had a tremendous improvement on my german after switching to lingq in the last few months. It allows you to import texts and you can very quickly look up the meaning of the word. While you do this it creates a database of words you've seen/ learned in context. It also automatically creates flashcards of those you've been exposed to and progressively moves them to a known state. What's cool is that you get a real sense of progress and where you're at. You can attach audio to texts as well and it also keeps tracks of words you've listened to. Anyway that's kept me much more motivated!. But still the gist of it is, read stuff you like in target language, children's books, newstories and hear the same content read out loud. Tv shows with subtitles in the target language are also great.
pencilcode··on Who's downloading pirated papers? Everyone
She's the one who's putting herself at risk. Amazing. Amazing. Amazing. And every time you slander someone you really should link to independent sources so others can at least verify and judge for themselves.
pencilcode··on Intel releases open source blockchain
A blockchain can be used for more stuff than currency. See ethereum for example.
pencilcode··on Scala Center
I've been working with scala for the last 2 months and I like it. The things i don't love are: the long compile times (lots of time wasted here), the lack of a community accepted/official coding practices - if sbt by default would run scalastyle on packaging/testing, that might help on enforcing a consistent set of good common practices on community code.
pencilcode··on This is why people fear the Internet of Things
The IoT startups are trying to get market share right now so they don't care at all about security. About a year ago I went to an IoT startup interview and asked if they used ssl when transferring data to and from the devices. Answer: at this stage it doesn't justify the investment, we're on vc money now and we need to get clients first.. It's going to get crazy when this becomes a real fad..

tig can also be used to stage changes.
pencilcode··on Triton: Docker and the “best of all worlds”
The fact that he wrote it actually wins him points in my book but it's not relevant to this discussion. Kudos to the Joyent team, i've been curious about dtrace for ages but never looked into it thinking i couldn't use it anyway (only use debian based distros at work) - maybe now is the time :)
