peignoir··on The AirPods Pro “Rattlegate”
Same here I had both replaced, but they would only let me replace one and later the other. Replacing was great at first, I observed that the first few days the sealing test was perfect, but already the test is not passing. I m pretty sure it’s a hardware problem, could be shock resistance could be wax could be humidity but it looks like the mic (or many?) who is needed to do the noise cancellation gets faulty somehow. If it’s a design issue I guess the only option will be to wait for the next gen, apple might offer a discount if you bring back your pro but I’m pretty sure they won’t do a thing unless this becomes a public issue (maybe the European Commission or some class action) too bad as I love this product hopefully the next gen will fix it
peignoir··on On the Closing of Living Computers: Museum+Labs
Very sad :( I remember having the chance to go there and meet amazing people (one of them worked on the first micro kernel) being able to see a real PDP working ... I don't get why bill gates would not back up his friend s old project :(
peignoir··on Ask HN: Is there still a place for native desktop apps?
Anything relying on DLTs has to be on desktop
peignoir··on 17yo guy built 14.7“ f/2.89 Newtonian reflector telescope
Oh brings me back memories :) I did that at his age too. Dobsons are awesome, would dev a tracking system if I were 17 now (with a raspberry pie) keep on the good work!
peignoir··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2020)
Joinmassive.com / remote / full time / pre series A and growing fast / GPU / C/C++

We re looking for a C++ macOS & Windows developer for our Computing Monetization project who can work on low level / especially GPU across platforms (windows / MAC)a plus if you have experience in crypto mining

MASSIVE is a fully distributed company headquartered in the USA. MASSIVE is a well-funded startup with founders, advisors, and investors that have been successful on many other, well-known projects (ask for more info by email)

The MASSIVE SDK is an ethical alternative to current online monetization. The SDK lets developers charge their users for premium services and in-app items with a little bit of their unused computing resources, rather than money or ads. We can generate up to $0.50 per user per month. The SDK works by analyzing available resources across Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android devices and making that supply accessible to computing needs on the demand side, including scientific calculations, cryptocurrency mining, monte carlo simulations, bandwidth sharing, and IP address in an intelligent way (almost invisible / realtime load balancing)

Job requirement Experience with GPU programming, we re looking to optimize our code / Experience with GPU cryptocurrency mining would be ideal but we re open to anyone who is passionate about high performance computing at a low level and who can work across platforms

Communications are online mostly, we re a dev heavy startup (no useless meetings) English is needed. Our team is in north and South America as long as Europe so far.

peignoir··on My Love and Hate Relationship with Hackathons
Good ideas, would love to try to organize an introvert and healthy hackhaton ...
peignoir··on The Making of Stunt Island
Oh so many memories, I spent so many hours as a kid setting up my own stunt. Would def want a new version running with a modern 3d engine (GTA V is a little like that)
peignoir··on Ask HN: How to rediscover the joy of programming?
I dropped programming after my first real job. I used to program from a young age (Basic, pascal, C, ASM) then played with GNU/Linux and BSD then on networks with Cisco and Juniper to setup some BGP route (internship) all of that was a lot of fun I loved building mini video games or my own operating system. But once I started to work and some guy who did not know programming was asking me to do some not fun code about accounting and I had to work with other programmers I realized I loved to play but not to work. I then moved to the business side as I liked learning new things and I got to tell programmers what to build without having to be bored. But consulting became boring too. It took me a while but I found happiness in entrepreneurship and started to code a little again while doing business or non profits. I think building your own thing is a lot of fun. At this point I would maybe recommend you to take a break and not code for a little while to see where your true north is. Good luck!
peignoir··on You're a Slave to Money, Then You Die
It’s ad reductio it’s like saying soccer is pushing a ball. You could also say life is waking up eating sleeping and then death. It’s true but it’s definitely an emotional argument. I preferred the lectures on free will by Conway, it does not answer anything but it allows for a nice réflexion
peignoir··on Why is Maxwell's theory so hard to understand? (2007) [pdf]
I love this interview it’s typical of Feynman; what do you mean by how magnet works is a fair question but it’s also a multi form one. We don’t really know we just know up to a certain level he had a lecture about how Mayans predicted astronomical events with beans, were the bean the answer to why?. I’ve learned a lot from this interview on how to look at science. Why is indeed a profound concept
peignoir··on Scientists monitor brains replaying memories in real time
Fascinating, our brain seems to have a read and write function based the the type of signal sent by the neurons. Now they question would be how does the brain “knows” when to right and when not
peignoir··on A Man Who Saw the Pandemic Coming
Great interview until he talks about the slowly boiling frog analogy : https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boiling_frog it’s stupid but he lost his credibility for me there ...
peignoir··on Paris Mayor: It's Time for a '15-Minute City'
+1 The elections are coming soon and the current mayor is just doubling down on promesses (while Paris is great on paper the past couple of years did feel like chaos from my point of view)
peignoir··on P-hacked hypotheses are deceivingly robust (2016)
Yep, that s also how science works: it predicts the future based on a model. Quick trick to know if it s a science or not: if it has the word science in it it’s not. (Eg social science)
peignoir··on Entrepreneurship is a spectrum so why did we forget to support its social side?
Author here,

I agree with the academic attention and that the concept has existed for a long time of course.

The point here was to introduce a new model to look at it to go beyond the 4 types of entrepreneurs introduced by steve blank.

Usually social entrepreneurship is studied at the startup level not the founder level. I wanted to show that for one Bill Gates it might exist an invisible Bill or Melinda gates who helped millions but made no $.

This post is certainly not trying to be about politics, the goal is just to help advance the discussion of supporting entrepreneurs who are working on things usually done by the state (Where customers don’t pay)

The conclusion and point of this article will come in future article; it resonates a lot with yesterday s post on HN about “debt is back”

peignoir··on Ask HN: What are the best unknown books you have read?
Gurdjieff the cult leader / charlatan? Who used to paint birds in yellow to sell them as canaries? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Gurdjieff

I agree he is brilliant but at the same level as the founder of the Scientology or other cult leaders who became awfully rich

Talking about a good book to read on cults / religion :

peignoir··on Goodbye, New York, California and Illinois – Hello where?
I did move to Puerto Rico, there is a small and growing tech ecosystem there and growing. A lot of tax incentive and flights to Miami and nyc are cheap. Rents are cheap and this is a good deal for remote workers
peignoir··on Why the foundations of physics have not progressed for 40 years
And academia is failing too, I can’t remember what Nobel prize mentioned that he could not get one today as most researchers are stuck in having to produce papers for the sake of keeping their grants. What would be needed is a lot of free time and freedom to think ...
peignoir··on Having Kids
I have no kids yet, but I always thought the goal of life is obviously to have kids wether they are dna or idea ones. We re hard programmed for that like any other species. The issue now is cost in terms of time of money. I see a couple of solutions to these, will test and document :)
peignoir··on Ask HN: My company wants my side project. What can I do?
I would go for a friendly resolution, just say hey some of that was done on my free time it represents that much hours of work, I’m fine transferring it in exchange for $ to cover the extra work / equity if it’s a startup. Also negotiate some power if you can like having your own team to help you with it etc... everyone wins : you and your Corp

peignoir··on Astrophotography with Night Sight on Pixel Phones
Meh, I used to take better photos with a disposable pocket camera where you take off the shutter to allow for long exposure. But it’s a step in the right direction. Ultimately you would indeed need to filter a lot of thermic noise to allow for longer exposure on a CCD. (I started digital Astro photo years ago with an ST6 that needed to be cool down to -60C using a Pelletier module)
peignoir··on Leaving Prison at 72
Yes, remind me of Weber s law. It is observed that the same law applies to justice sentences as a bias on how our brain works (following a logarithmic function) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hHG8io5qIU8
peignoir··on A push gone wrong in the name of what, exactly?
Death by push
peignoir··on “We have no reason to believe 5G is safe”
The sun is way worse than 5G. Saddens me for the academic world to see such study / or see an argument based on a number of “scientists” instead of an argument of quality.
peignoir··on Open-source apps removed from Google Play Store due to donation links
All of these really motivates me to push for decentralized projects. If the future Is basically full of gate keepers choosing what apps can be used or not and we don’t have any platform allowing freedom then it would be a very sad future indeed
