pedro2··on Transitioning Away from Google Services
For now Google's counterparts still rate better on interoperability (CalDAV, CardDAV).
pedro2··on Transitioning Away from Google Services
I agree with you.

That being said, I'd be strongly inclined to believe all your stuff [from Personal Accounts] -- even if only its metadata -- will be fed to OpenAI/Bing's Sidney sooner or later. Same with Google with regards to Bard.

pedro2··on Citymapper Joins Via
Can I expect a somewhat lesser focus on European cities in 1 to 2 years while VIA expands its capabilities on Northern America?
pedro2··on Privatizing our digital identities
Thinking somewhat along the same scale, I'm planning for having 2 years+ of domain name registration, Fastmail payment & (I should) have Thunderbird constantly syncing the full IMAP to the disk.

In the name of efficiency, it won't be the state doing it until someone, or groups of someone, get sufficiently pissed.

EDIT: passwords & other secrets must be shared with someone of trust.

pedro2··on De-Bloated Windows 11 Build Runs on 2GB of RAM
I never thinned an OS since Windows XP (Black Viper, you rule!). Why put yourself in harms' way by using an unsupported configuration? I briefly consider O&O ShutUp 11 for shutting up Windows' telemetry. AFAI read, works reasonably well, but made Edge not start after some updates.

I use Windows and Linux, for privacy concerns. If you want privacy, go for Mac (not that I'd do it). On mobile, still working out what are the best options.

Paywalled; Didn't Read.

I'm not engaging in illegal behaviour by using the archive.ph link, in fact, I'm reporting it to The Economist as it shall be DMCA'd (I will not, but I stand by my reasoning).

pedro2··on The global health-care collapse
Where is it? Can't seem to find it.

EDIT: found it. Anyway, didn't read the article. I think paywalled submissions should be banned.

pedro2··on Bill Gates tries to install Movie Maker (2003)
Have you ever used Windows Vista?

It is still a mess nowadays, but it has been polished - deduplication for WinSxS, search bar for Registry.

pedro2··on Bill Gates tries to install Movie Maker (2003)
I really doubt the issue is devs. If they don't want to tank their velocity they have to open an issue to fix such problems, which will stay open and never looked at.
pedro2··on CircleCI says hackers stole encryption keys and customers’ source code
Those things need to be supervisioned. FlyTAP has gotten their entire rewards DB (if not all their DB) hacked and if it were not for IHBP I would never know because the company never told me. As far as I know FlyTAP never got a fine for ignoring its obligations.

GDPR is a good idea but there must be supervision for it being applied as defined.

I don't understand what the fuss is all about. Neoliberalism baby, the market will solve it.

pedro2··on 2022 was the year of Linux on the Desktop?
Powernap? You mean S0idle? If it is advertised it is used -- tested on Thinkpad Yoga L15 Gen...3? .
pedro2··on 2022 was the year of Linux on the Desktop?
You must be lying! Are you implying S0x works badly and wakes too many times, pcie_aspm requires to be set to force to have decent results and enabling S3 is hidden somewhere in the BIOS assuming it's there at all?

You must be lying, I never heard of such stories!

NOTE: My computer came without OS. Assuming HP Dev One or System 76 behave better in this regard. But I'm a sucker for 2-in-1.

pedro2··on Promotion of alternative social platforms policy
Free while there are alternatives.

After they asfixiated the competition they're free to jack up the prices.

Smart business practice really.

Via Twitter, recheck accuracy:

> So. All those dodgy VIP purchases the Tories made in 2020/2021. They were added as a spend on the NHS budget, to make it look like they were spending more money on our National Health Service

pedro2··on Microsoft Is Forcing Me to Buy MacBooks
*must not
pedro2··on Microsoft Is Forcing Me to Buy MacBooks
S3 must be advertised by BIOS to enable suspend to idle.
pedro2··on Microsoft Is Forcing Me to Buy MacBooks
English word suspend is available on menu.

The functionality is there. If resume from suspend breaks 3 times in a row, disable, enable hibernate.

If working, after 30 mins suspend, awake, do hibernate.

If fails 3 times, always use hybrid suspend.

If this functionality does not exist is because resources are being misallocated.

If they don't want to support suspend: REMOVE the option.

pedro2··on Ask HN: Where to Start with Android Custom ROM or AOSP Development?
Oh hi! Thanks for your GSI!

Currently on Pixel 6a but before was on Xiaomi Mi A3 -- laurel_sprout. I largely ignored GSI because I assumed most important things were broken and tried to focus on a non-GSI ROM (and later gave up). (Just rechecked now and it requires some random files stored on random Google Drives so I ignore them).

Anyway I explored your work for some time and it seemed very cool, so thanks for it!

pedro2··on Ask HN: Where to Start with Android Custom ROM or AOSP Development?
Pixel 6a, 6 and 6 Pro don't have LOS yet -- at least stable. I don't remember why.

Pixel 6a are at a "good" price by western measures -- €350

Nope. kernel module mei_hdcp exists on modern systems.
