peanball··on Finder is so frustrating and has been since day one
And yet copying multiple large files from or to the same disk grinds the throughput to a halt on Windows where Finder keeps up close to theoretical bandwidth in sum.
peanball··on Playdate maker Panic is refunding tariff fees to customers
Even independent of tariffs, FedEx likes to send stuff to debt collectors and not apply reasonable processes. We had paid a customs bill at the door and the driver never filed it in the system. I have a receipt and after 4 “reminders” and fighting them, with that receipt attached they still sent it to collection. FedEx doesn’t care. Talked to the debt collector and they dropped it, and said: we will check why they don’t have their shit together (transliterated). And this is in Germany.
peanball··on Maiao: Gerrit-style code review workflow for GitHub, GitLab, Gitea, others
It could help in the sense that people would not accept a pile of `fix`, `fix of fix` commits in a PR anymore.

The current UIs don't punish you for that as the reviewer mostly sees one final coherent change.

peanball··on What was nice about the UI of Windows 2000
Not the same. ME also came out around 2000 but was based on windows 9x, windows 2000 was based on NT. The UI looked somewhat similar with those two.
peanball··on Cat Gap
A topic of the “Three Robots” episode of Death Love & Robots, kind of. Sorry for the fandom link.

peanball··on Formatting code should be unnecessary
I can only recommend difftastic[1], which is a language aware diff. Independent of linter that shows the logical diff, not an assortment of characters or lines that changed.

peanball··on Oxfordshire clock still keeping village on time after 500 years
Yes.
peanball··on Presentation Slides with Markdown
I think the use case would be limited to a handful of users (slight hyperbole).

The average user is content enough with using plain PowerPoint and won’t bother with Markdown. People using Markdown are more on the “you’re doing it wrong, put the basics on the slide” side.

The people that make nice backgrounds for their talk, sometimes with a word or two, won’t get there with a text based tool either.

People that use LaTeX, markdown or some other text to slides tool are few and far between.

peanball··on Why Kagi launched "no use, no pay"
For completeness, it does say “one month, one year or forever” in the linked FAQ and makes clear it’s not recurring. GP rephrased the FAQ.
peanball··on TUI editor and Vim/Neovim alternative

peanball··on Ghostty 1.0
I’ve noticed that too when the scroll back buffer is particularly long. iTerm seems to then reflow from the beginning, which can take a while.

I keep using a lot of fresh tabs all the time and iTerm resizes instantly via Rectangle for me.

Ghostty was a bit more sluggish in resizing on an Intel Mac than iTerm in the current latest versions.

peanball··on Ghostty 1.0
It does, natively.
peanball··on Developer wrote 25k lines of Neovim plugin code using phone and touchscreen
I buy flight and other tickets on the phone all the time. Autofill for CC details, quick access to PayPal and other things are all there. One swipe away.

Transport and booking apps (Airbnb, etc) are all pretty decent and similar to the speed on a laptop. But I can do that while walking the dog, while on the bus, and many other situations where I’m not at a proper computer.

Elder millennial (1982), so it’s not just a young people thing.

peanball··on The withering dream of a cheap American electric car
Usually they don’t beep on lane changes when you use the indicators before switching.

The lights in the side mirrors are also not removing the obligation to check your blind spot.

Both help, but don’t take away your responsibility as driver.

peanball··on Nova by Panic: Native Mac code editor
Goland / the Go plugin is great though.

For auch a “heavy” IDE it’s also surprisingly responsive.

peanball··on Mira Murati leaves OpenAI
Right at the top (at least on mobile): “Posted June 6, 2023”
peanball··on Show HN: 789-Zip – A native macOS app for 7-Zip
BetterZip. https://betterzip.com
peanball··on Writing GUI applications on the Raspberry Pi without a desktop environment (2019)
I have a project with Raspberry Pis up to 3B+ (https://just-functional.com). egl_rpi is not supported on 4, but KMS/DRM is, still headless.
peanball··on Writing GUI applications on the Raspberry Pi without a desktop environment (2019)
Don’t forget about the Kivy framework. It’s a python framework that renders openGL accelerated UIs, also headlessly on the raspberry pi if needed. https://kivy.org
peanball··on Apple users are being locked out of their Apple IDs with no explanation
I had the same thing this morning. Unlock and password reset via another device worked through.
peanball··on Textual Healing: iOS Text Editing Minutiae
And SWT is built on calling system native components. Of course the “text editor” ends up being one large custom component that has nothing to gain from being in a “native” View.

All of that said, SWT and Eclipse do know that they are running on MacOS. It would be possible to mimic the same behavior, but that’s hard to do because there are so many minute details per platform.

peanball··on Tracking developer build times to decide if the M3 MacBook is worth upgrading
Often you also have the CI system designed in a way to verify a “from scratch” build that avoids any issues with “works on my machine” scenarios due to things still being cached that shouldn’t be there anymore.
peanball··on Apple Is Approaching Social on Vision Pro the Way Meta Should Have All Along
So far none. It hasn’t been released yet.
peanball··on Atlassian prepares to abandon on-prem server products
There are issues at group / org level in GitLab that can span such tasks.
peanball··on ChatGPT Enterprise
With SO you also have no guarantee that the person has the license to put that snippet. Even that could have been copied from somewhere else. A customer was scanning for and banning SO, if that was the only determined source.
peanball··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?
Peanball.net

A random list of technical things I work(ed) on in my spare time and a reading list of articles I found interesting to remember and share.

peanball··on Show HN: Java REST without annotations, DI nor reactive streams
The amount of times I’ve put or seen @Transactional in the wrong place where it was never called and silently ignored is pretty high. It always led to very long debugging sessions. Especially if you touch that code once a year.
peanball··on tcpdump is amazing (2016)
This is what HAProxy does. At least the reading then dropping privileges. The admin writes the config themselves (or uses their own tool).
peanball··on A decade on, the 'This is fine' creator wants to put the famous dog to rest
The full article (link at the top of the page) has it. The submitted URL is the stripped down text version, maybe with less tracking
peanball··on Httpie: Modern, user-friendly command-line HTTP client for the API era
