pdyck··on Ask HN: Do you think Agile/Scrum is beneficial for software delivery?
The biggest improvement we made to our dailies was to break up the traditional three question structure. Nobody really cares about your status from yesterday. Especially since we work together every day and are a self-organizing team that does not need to report to a manager on a daily basis.

Instead we talk about our plans for the day, ask a lot of questions and plan our collaboration and problem solving sessions. These dailies are usually shorter and I feel like I get much more value from them.

pdyck··on Coronavirus: Spain to keep registry of those who refuse Covid vaccine
You could use a differentially private mechanism like randomized response to gather the data. This would protect the individual through plausible deniability and still allow some kind of research about what factors correlate with anti-vaxxers. But I doubt that this is what the Spanish government is going to do.

pdyck··on AWS services explained in one line each
Services like S3 are referred to as „object storage“. AWS Lambda is a service for „serverless compute“ or „function as a service“ (although it‘s debatable if these are good names for the concept).

My point is that definitely are named for these concepts but AWS uses brand names which is quite confusing for people who are new to AWS.

pdyck··on Problems with TypeScript
Why is this better than throwing errors or using Promise.resolve()?

I know it is inefficient because creating a new error with a stack trace each time is bad for performance. However, you can also throw errors which do not extend Error to avoid this. Destructuring the output and explicitly checking for errors every time seems to be quite the hassle.

pdyck··on Gamers propose punishing Blizzard by flooding it with GDPR requests
I have a Hearthstone package on NPM which gets a few downloads everyday (also from China). Yesterday I removed everything in it and now module.exports is „光復香港 時代革命“ instead of Hearthstone data.

pdyck··on Amsterdam's Plan: If You Buy a Newly Built House, You Can't Rent It Out
Read the comment again, young immigrants will have to pay higher rents because there will be a shortage of rentable housing.
pdyck··on Flair: A simple framework for natural language processing
I had the same experience when trying to do NER on customer support requests. My model performed great for research datasets but it was mediocre at best for my own dataset. Do you have any suggestions on how to achieve better results in domains where mistakes, bad punctuation, etc are common?
pdyck··on Scripting API now in public beta
Trying to write mods for Minecraft is what got me into programming as a teenager, this looks really cool!
pdyck··on In Brazil, it is considered rude to be on time to a party
In Germany it's the same for parties or meeting with friends. If it is work-related most people tend to be on time.
pdyck··on Keras vs PyTorch
Keras only offers standard layers but you can implement your own LSTM layer and use it with Keras. This way you can take advantage of all the other features
pdyck··on Keras vs PyTorch
That's what I did for my bachelor's thesis. I didn't take any advanced Maths classes, so I had to learn everything from scratch. Keras helped me to build an intuition for neural networks and made me more interested in learning about the formulas and how it works with TensorFlow in the background. I really enjoyed learning with this top-down approach.
pdyck··on Basic Authentication over HTTP – The Evil
Yeah, it‘s just three paragraphs explaining that HTTP is not encrypted.
pdyck··on Simple React Patterns
When the component is mounted on the page, a planet is fetched from an api. Then the response body is parsed to JSON. After that the object is added to the component state. When there was an error it is added to the state instead.
pdyck··on Computer Science Education
> can sometimes (seem) abrasive and uninviting

Well that's just discriminating against nerds
