I'm a software engineer and startup consultant, reach me at paul[at]denya.dev. Always happy to hear from HN folks.

pdenya··on Why we're suing the CIA
"Don't bother trying" -- great advice.
pdenya··on How I increased conversion on my checkout form
> Added card-type dropdown ... Their selection isn’t stored or used for anything.

I wouldn't have thought of on my own, adding extra fields that do nothing except increase conversion.

pdenya··on Spooking potential hires
Seems like most companies disagree with this, great people get preferential hiring treatment and get to skip interviews. The story of Zuckerberg taking candidates on hikes is a good example.

I wonder if it would be as effective to just tell them what you're letting them skip and why.

pdenya··on NFL players: height and weight over time
I agreed with your moral position that it's the players right despite the fact that it's wasteful.

Your last sentence is out there though. We're talking about kids in college, no one has put a price on their intelligence yet. Also unnecessary to imply that football players wouldn't be able to do anything useful with their intelligence.

pdenya··on Dashcube – Communicate In Context
Our company uses Trello and Slack. This is basically Trello + real time updates on the comments + separate user-to-user private chat. This could almost replace Trello for us but won't replace Slack.

Slack also has:

- very good mobile/desktop apps

- integrations

- fast search

- group chat rooms

The project replay feature is also cool but I'm discounting it because I can't think of a use for it as long as everything is timestamped.

pdenya··on OS X Yosemite
I have Mavericks running fine on a core 2 duo ~2007 mac mini with 2GB ram. Where did you get the idea that it's slower?
pdenya··on You can't cancel subscriptions on Evernote
Definitely. They're not required to put a "Cancel" button on the web interface. If they wanted to raise the bar on work required to cancel they could easily force people to email support rather than putting a (..fake?) button up.
pdenya··on Why lawmakers just voted against their own bill to reform the NSA
So the House Committee on Rules committee butchered this bill to the point where it actively went against the legislative intent. In case anyone is curious, here's the current members of the House Committee on Rules:

- Pete Sessions, Texas, Chairman (R)

- Virginia Foxx, North Carolina Vice Chair (R)

- Rob Bishop, Utah (R)

- Tom Cole, Oklahoma (R)

- Rob Woodall, Georgia (R)

- Rich Nugent, Florida (R)

- Daniel Webster, Florida (R)

- Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Florida (R)

- Michael C. Burgess, Texas (R)

- Louise Slaughter, New York, Ranking Member (D)

- James P. McGovern, Massachusetts (D)

- Alcee Hastings, Florida (D)

- Jared Polis, Colorado (D)

pdenya··on Write Code, Crush Foes, Get Hired – Multiplayer Programming Tournament
I don't know why you're so down on this. It's a competitive game that looks fun, no one is forcing you to take part. The code created here isn't even useful for any other purpose! It's not some 99 designs contest for code, it's like the Stripe CTF challenges if anything.
pdenya··on Optimizely Raises $57 Million
Google Website Optimizer is still around. It's called Content Experiments now and it's under Google Analytics.

Optimizely is cool because it lets you run arbitrary javascript for tests without modifying the code base in most cases.

pdenya··on Swype makes almost 4000 location requests every day
If it was successful it would drain your battery, failed attempts should cost almost nothing so this fits with the bug theory.
pdenya··on Magic mirror: One way mirror with a monitor behind it
Voice recognition is a good thought and totally doable. A camera probably isn't a great choice for a bathroom mirror though.
pdenya··on The Illusion of Life: Disney's principles of animation
Very cool animations and most fit the principals nicely but there's very little info on this page. I found the wikipedia page helpful and relevant - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/12_basic_principles_of_animatio...
pdenya··on The Worst Part of YC
It's interesting that you've always found yourself having too many good candidates, it doesn't seem like a common problem.
pdenya··on Amazon to acquire Comixology
As a former comic reader, owning a physical comic is like owning a book. It's satisfying but convenience will win for most of the market.
pdenya··on E-Go: A sub-$1000 electric longboard
It's got a common longboard design with a common wheel color. The tech is the differentiator, and yea, as you said, 1/3 the price.
pdenya··on Evolutionary algorithm to find Quake III's fast inverse square hack with Python
Why is that a relevant question now? How would doing this be more helpful without the results of the algorithm you're attempting to cut corners to approximate?
pdenya··on $ make -k $(python2 -c "print 'A'*5432")
make -k "[a 5432 character string containing only A]"

From make man page

    -k, --keep-going
Continue as much as possible after an error. While the target that failed, and those that depend on it, cannot be remade, the other dependencies of these targets can be processed all the same.
pdenya··on Disney Accelerator
Oh man, I love this idea. Disney IP access for a startup could be huge.
pdenya··on Show HN: PressFriendly – PR software built with machine learning for startups
np, we do a lot of other cool things with it too and more to come. For example, when you're preparing emails for each reporter we provide recommendations for which pieces of the pitch you should send to them, based off the same machine learning system.
pdenya··on Show HN: PressFriendly – PR software built with machine learning for startups
We generate a press list by comparing the results of your story wizard (all of the text about your story and your business that you enter into our system) with reporter archives.

To go into slightly more detail, we've train classifiers for each reporter in the system using the articles they've written. Comparing your story against the articles reporters have written in the past few months gives us a very accurate picture of who might write about you and therefore who you should be spending time trying to contact.

pdenya··on Ask HN: Why do SF "web design" companies suck so hard?
It's because high end web design companies aren't sourcing customers who are googling "San Francisco Web Design". What are you looking for more specifically? An agency?
pdenya··on Coding tip: Leave your code in a broken state
It's no trouble at all to work on a personal branch and merge it back in once it's fixed/complete. Especially if you're planning on doing it and are using a tool like git flow.
pdenya··on Best development book I've read, has no code in it
> I do feel it is totally possible to teach people how to "program" without knowing how to code.

What is the benefit here compared to learning programming by coding?

pdenya··on Ask PG: Why not use the ▲ unicode character instead of a gif on HN?
Still likely makes no difference on this site. The percent of people on here on IE10 has got to be almost 0.
pdenya··on Sqwiggle: Someone is watching you
As the article states, it's helpful for others to see whether or not you're on a call or eating or whatever else.
pdenya··on The Hack That Brought Foursquare Back From The Dead
> Licensing out this technology

Foursquare is looking years ahead, it seems unlikely that they'd switch to a short term strategy. You have to assume that this technique will be adopted by Apple & Google at some point.

pdenya··on A Deeply Unsettling Time Lapse Of Every Nuclear Explosion On Earth
If you want to contribute to the thread, link to the comments on the previous posts. Otherwise, the fact that this has been posted before (apparently 3 years ago..) doesn't make it less interesting now.

pdenya··on Have I been pwned? Check if your email has been compromised in a data breach
Common tactic as far as I can tell, other companies do the same thing. eg: My Blizzard account that I can't sign in to because it's cancelled has somehow been 'compromised' multiple times.
pdenya··on Why You Can't Build a Smartphone
I used to think well of Sony but my PS3 has lowered my opinion of them as much as the issues with Sony laptops that family members own. I'd love to see them invest in quality and turn things around but I don't expect them to. It's like they've lost the ability to think through the whole experience so even their nice products have extreme low points.
