pcvarmint··on I believe 6502 instruction set is a good first assembly language
I would say that the 6809 is a better first assembly language of that era. (I keep hearing references to 68xxx, but the 6809 is closer.)
pcvarmint··on DuckDuckGo was down
Bing is sluggish but seems to work sometimes now.

I wonder if it's a DDoS attack on Bing.

pcvarmint··on DuckDuckGo was down
It started failing on searches 1-2 hours ago.
pcvarmint··on The Performance Impact of C++'s `final` Keyword
Each of the test cases measured needs to be run at least 3 times in a row, to warm caches (not just CPU but OS too) and to detect and remove noise.

In fact, I would run the same test repeatedly, keeping track of the k fastest times (k being ~3-7), and only stopping when the first and the kth fastest times are within a certain tolerance (as low as 1%). This ensures repeatability.

One sample of performance data for each test is not enough. This study provides no new insights.

Government censorship and government-corporate/NGO collusion is of interest.

Western Civilization is in the midst of Fascism (in the Mussolini sense of corporation and state), and yet most people are in a Mass Formation and welcome demonizing and killing their fellow man all because of minor disagreements, ideological or religious differences, or tribalism.

I don't know how much longer Western Civilization will survive without world war or collapse. The inmates are running the asylum.

CBRS is faster than Starlink here and doesn't have limits or throttling.

pcvarmint··on Ask HN: Which device is best for listening to long podcasts offline?
Yes, you can enable/disable streaming per show.

It can background download either over cellular or WiFi. You can disable Cellular downloads if it's too slow or expensive, and override it per-show (such as if you're traveling and really need the show).

You can skip silent spots and speed up the playback, and there are equalizer effects.

You can rewind files as long as 2-3 hours (I've seen shows as long as 12 hours, although I've never played them from front to back). You can set the fast-forward and rewind durations per click on a per-show basis, and allow the first click duration to be larger than the later ones.

You can control whether the show gets deleted after it's played, such as never if you want to always keep it on device because it's too big to download.

You can set a timer if you want playback to end after a certain time. It will remember the position last played in a podcast.

You can arrange podcasts by your own defined categories.

There are default global settings, and per-podcast overrides.

You can search for podcasts by keyword, or enter RSS feed URL manually. They don't have to be iTunes podcasts.

You can export podcast episodes by email/text attachments, or send raw files to other apps.

It uses SQLite under the hood, and I've used it with thousands of subscribed podcasts.

pcvarmint··on Why don’t Americans eat mutton?
Mutton is either adult sheep, or, in Indian cuisine, it sometimes means goat meat.

I have cooked and eaten lamb, mutton and goat South Indian-style. They are all good.

I don't know why more Americans don't eat lamb, mutton and goat, but they are definitely tastier than beef.

pcvarmint··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
Except for the camera and USB-C, it's not much better than an iPhone 13 Pro Max.

With the greater MP camera, you'd expect a 1 TB storage option.

pcvarmint··on Who employs your doctor? Increasingly, a private equity firm
Answer: I do.

I use Direct Primary Care.

I do not use doctors who are beholden to corporate bosses, insurance companies or shareholders.

COVID-19 has accelerated the parallel economy of Direct Primary (and Specialist) Care. It was a fork in the road, a bifurcation point, and many have decided which way they are going.

There are people who value medical freedom and the doctor-patient relationship, and there are some who value collective concerns "for the greater good" at the expense of individual liberty.

pcvarmint··on The ACLU Has Lost Its Way
The Rutherford Institute [0], which defended Brandon Raub against forced psychiatric "treatment" (imprisonment) after he posted naughty FaceBook messages [1], is the best civil liberties organization today.

John Whitehead hosts 10-minute podcasts about every other week. [2]

Wendy Kaminer has written WSJ articles and even a book, Worst Instincts, about the ACLU's illiberal decline. [3] [4] [5] [6]

pcvarmint··on The ACLU Has Lost Its Way
The Rutherford Institute [0] is much better than the ACLU on civil liberties issues these days, even though its founder, John W. Whitehead, was formerly associated with the Religious Right, and has since disavowed it [1].
