pcnix··on US developers can offer non-app store purchasing, Apple still collect commission
The problem is that we place a responsibility on competition in the market to favor consumers by reducing prices and preventing companies from having excessive margins. Allowing a single marketplace means there's no competition, and we're not sure if 15% is a fair rate at all.

I could make the assertion that I'd be able to provide everything that Apple does, but with a much lower cut, but this can't be put to the test because there's no way for me to start another app store that iPhone users can access. I suspect a lot of the arguments for the 15% cut will change once we have alternate app stores offering the same things Apple does, but with a much lower cut. You'll then see app developers with skin in the game, and we'll know if everyone actually really thinks Apple does this better or if they'd rather have the extra money from other app stores.

pcnix··on Welcome to Wikifunctions
This is similar to calculating probability from an odds ratio - if x = 1 and if n = your odds ratio, p = n/(n+1)

A neat explainer for how this helps with Bayesian updates (which is the update in trust that you're describing) is here - https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/QGkYCwyC7wTDyt3yT/0-and-1-ar...

pcnix··on Go with PHP
That was a bad way to make the point, because you could serve five orders of magnitude higher with PHP, or node or go or python or pretty much any language right now.

On top of that, You don't need massive k8s infra for any other framework either, so it isn't really a selling point for PHP itself.

I second the channel recommendation, it is a perfect watch for people interested in hands on building.

Syncthing now supports untrusted encrypted nodes, and it's fairly reliable.
pcnix··on Open Source Continuous File Synchronization
How I do this: * Create a unidirectional push only sync between the phone and a remote * Remote has a cron that syncs to backblaze regularly, and deletes from the server (this does not affect the phone) * Delete from the phone whenever I want

Ouch.

pcnix··on Parents of daughters are more likely to divorce than those with sons
> Nothing in GP's comment suggests that women should spend their twenties finding a husband, nor that they shouldn't do the things you just mentioned.

That is in fact exactly what the comment seems to suggest, in these lines.

> as opposed to when you were in your 20s (when the woman should be finding a potential husband

room500's response was exactly what I had in mind too, when I was reading the parent comment.

It very much feels like the GP had something specific in mind for "high-quality" that insinuates that caring for someone else's children is not a high quality thing to do.

I believe that quality is not what they are showing when they focus the comment on what women "should be doing", or if they're still seeing it as "someone else's kids".

pcnix··on Apple blocked Facebook's attempt to tell users about 30% App Store 'tax'
I think there's two real issues here:

* Apple does not allow other App Stores on their platform

* Apple does not allow other payment processing or even instructions on where you can purchase things outside of their platform. This reduces even big players like Netflix to just throw up a message that says "You can only use this if you're a memeber", rather than give users a helpful link where they can purchase a membership outside the app.

Neither of these are things that Android does, so the case against Apple is significantly stronger.

Might I suggest checking out org-journal? It's a natural extension of the org-mode way of things, and integrates quite well with the agenda too.

In my experience, ALB scaling is opaque, and constantly lags behind herds of traffic. This is very noticeable if you're running services that experience sudden spikes, there's a noticeable lag of ALB scaling.

That said though, it does do it's job for the most part.

pcnix··on Almost everything on computers is perceptually slower than it was in 1983 (2017)
Dan Luu has some interesting metrics on this [1].

This strikes at a slightly different problem, the latency of actually showing things on screen, but points out that not all is going well.

pcnix··on Mental Model Fallacy (2018)
Interestingly enough, people really good at understanding the complexity in systems are also people that seem to fall prey to, as you said, cultivating a false impression of understanding. Taleb is one that I think deserves criticism in that regard.

pcnix··on Ask HN: What are some examples of good database schema designs?
This is a database that satisfies at least the first three normal forms, and that might be why it felt comfortable. I admit that I have seen some dirty usage of this from a few WordPress plugin authors on a consultation, and it has since then not thought as greatly of it as a system that enforces good practices.

There's no need to be that aggressive, OP didn't say anything about getting fired or losing his job. What's optimal is subjective, and they seem to find comfort in what they do. Let's not get too used to tooting our own horn that we do it even on unrelated comment chains.
pcnix··on Google is not a search engine, but an ad engine
I agree. I've found DDG results to be sub-par in a variety of situations as well, and Google Search is sometimes almost oracular in it's prediciton of my search queries and surfaces the right solutions.

I really understand making the argument about privacy, , but Search is not the product to target here, it only seems to have gotten better these days, not worse.

pcnix··on Serverless Development with Serverless Framework
Absolutely agree, I tried it out for a short personal project and was disappointed with the bad documentation and even worse libraries that I found. I'm assuming large companies have their own internal libraries/ORMs for this, and that's how it is intended to be used.

In terms of the actual technology itself, it's very interestingly built, and as the poster above me mentioned, with a ton of caveats to the promises it makes.

pcnix··on Google Fires Four Workers, Including Staffer Tied to Protest
Please don't be vulgar, you can make your point with simpler language too.

As for the protest, the employee's right to protest is an important thing, and taking that away reduces you to an automaton. You'd be giving up the chance to hire great employees that have opinions of their own if you just want people that do what you ask. That puts you behind on innovation, and in the long term creates a very homogenous atmosphere that breeds complacency.
