pcdevils··on Tesla sues Swedish state agency over number plate blockage
Good. Let them make a fool of themselves in court. Tesla wont be happy till every country treats it's employees like disposable garbage, just like in the US.
pcdevils··on Windows 11 Pro's On-by-Default Encryption Slows SSDs Up to 45%
Only if you shutdown. Otherwise tpm is still in memory and everything is unlocked. Going off how many people compliance have to chase to restart for updates, a lot of people think sleep is fine
pcdevils··on Windows 10 warns me to use a "Microsoft-verified" app
HL² on pop-os was ok (tried it last week), a bit glitchy though. Portal completely froze and had to be killed. Probably better with Nvidia; I was using intel graphics. Interesting to try it though
pcdevils··on Why Britain doesn’t build
Thatcher was a disease we've never recovered from. Shit, just look at water privatisation... Going sooo well. Or the utilities that have left us privatising profits and socialising losses
pcdevils··on Getting 10TB of GitHub logs and extracting details of all users and repositories
Based on Serbia but operating the servers in Frankfurt. With the cavalier attitude to scraping and linking people's identifiable data without any sort of opt-in I had assumed it would be a US company.
pcdevils··on Mozilla Ventures Invests in Fiddler, Fueling Better AI Trust
Saw fiddler and was wondering how telerik had repurposed the tool for ai https://www.telerik.com/fiddler Do US startups just skip the stage during naming where you check for preexisting products with the same name
pcdevils··on Software bugs that cause real-world harm
Til. Cool
pcdevils··on On a great interview question
The tens of thousands being laid off from that ivy league and ones who jumped the, 6 step, multi-tiered interview hurdles to get a job offer, later rescinded, might disagree with that value proposition.
pcdevils··on Britain Is Broken
Their values are money. You don't go to Eton, become a Tory MP and work for your constituency. You get there to gain influence and power that you can peddle to anyone willing to give you money. The ability to shift and sell public services to people for favours, donations and cash is part of their system, not a flaw that would be eradicated by another 50k

Yet another zero code style product promotion for the stack. Matt can fuck off.
pcdevils··on Testing GPT 4's code-writing capabilities with some real world problems
Never went away; been hearing about it since msft sold the idea to managers in regards to SharePoint... Fucking SharePoint. They can design their own forms and hook the data up to bits of automation. Like magic for muggles.
pcdevils··on Lessons learned from 15 years of SumatraPDF, an open source Windows app (2021)
Agreed. I still use acrobat for form filling and this one for the rest
pcdevils··on What a good debugger can do
The same tools don't work on windows either. Delve works well as a remote debugger against go on windows server though. Another fun one is go won't create dumps on panic on windows when GOTRACEBACK=crash is set.
pcdevils··on Lessons learned from 15 years of SumatraPDF, an open source Windows app (2021)
Part of the push to use the browsers pdf engine was a result of Adobe acrobat being an endless festival of security bugs. Loading it in the browser allows them to reuse the same sandboxing. Pretty good idea for most folk. I like sumatrapdf because it keeps track of the pdfs I have open and the page. Like having an ebook reader on windows that doesn't suck.
pcdevils··on Lessons learned from 15 years of SumatraPDF, an open source Windows app (2021)
Used Sumatra for so so long, always used ninite to batch install basic apps on new machines and one of the pdf apps they have as an option on the free ninite page is sumatrapdf. Great app. Thanks for all the effort
pcdevils··on Float-Parsing Benchmark: Regular Visual Studio, ClangCL and Linux GCC
The ADK used a lookup db to apply those fixes though; it wasn't a global fudge. Windows compatibility has probably been the main differentiator over the decades and every break (vista driver signing, dropping support for a bunch of scanners/printers, os quality issues) then 10 and even more so 11 making upgrading a mess of seemingly huge hardware replacement costs for next to no user/use gains, has caused uproar. Hell even xp was a mess; windows compatibility mode barely did what it suggested; but the intention was there.

pcdevils··on Hyundai was poised to become Tesla’s top contender. Then the U.S. blindsided it
In the US. They're required in the UK, EU and Canada.
pcdevils··on Serving 250k developers with one support engineer
Most of the companies laying off people are huge businesses that apply the most onerous of interview hurdle jumping practices.

They didn't cut down on the process, or the five stage interview processes during the last two years of over hiring, they doubled down on them.

There are very few careers where entire industries like leetcode, hackerrank, coderpad etc have been founded to promote the practice of making every Dev slog through a mass of made up crap intent on wasting the time of everyone involved to make HR feel like they've achieved something.

pcdevils··on Tesla goes down across Europe leaving some drivers unable to charge cars
In the old days when the card machine went down they'd pull out the manual machine that used carbon paper to pick up the embossed numbers on the card and you signed for it.

Of course there were lots of cases of fraud linked to those too.

pcdevils··on Tesla goes down across Europe leaving some drivers unable to charge cars
Hard to relate those issues. Most charging ports are in public areas and in the time it takes for the connection to restore and billing to kick in probably isn't going to be long enough to charge your vehicle up much.

While the Kia issue boils down to the US failing to follow the UK, Canada and other regions in using regulation to make immobilisers mandatory. The subsequent penny pinching that took place producing cars with security features that have been around since the early 90s, as they were treated as a premium feature in the US. That combined with them opting for a cheap ignition column gave them their current predicament as even basic steering lock functionality is dead.

pcdevils··on We ship the most code on Friday
Infra can make it easier to do it safer; it's not a panacea. Sure you can roll back; alert based on metrics / logs / error rates, but the knowledge required to automate around these data points tends to require the data to already exist, which won't be true with new features.
pcdevils··on We ship the most code on Friday
Wouldn't it make more sense to count the weekend as a whole? So 22 on the weekend, negating the point they're making. All an incident on a Sunday says in that data, presumably is, that as no one was working no one noticed the issue on the Saturday.
pcdevils··on It's legal to hit children in school in 19 American states
US news and dictionaries say corporal like the UK. Corporeal makes it sound like beating the physical being of the spirit. Which, depending on your views may seem right, whilst being grammatically incorrect.
pcdevils··on Show HN: Who Cares? – Professions in the NHS
Who cares, no one... why launch something like this without first curating some starter profiles?

You may want to look at posting on some nursing forums and paramedic forums to get some content before pushing this.
