paweladamczuk··on My Partner Is Messy. Help
It seems to me that the article is more focused on trying to help people than trying to control them to achieve your own goals. I think there's nothing wrong with seeing your partner struggling with something, talking to them about it and coming up with ideas to help them. The tone and attitude is important, but the article even touches on that as well.

I often have the same reaction as you to people trying to modulate me in any way. But I am learning to view their intentions more positively and I often find that it ultimately helps me to let go of my stubbornness and actually self-reflect on the things about me that they're pointing out - even though it's always difficult to do.

paweladamczuk··on The "Reitoff principle": Why you should add "nothing" to your work-life schedule
I read this, took a shower and can now share my own shower thoughts.

Imagine explaining all of this to a person asking you why you're unavailable on a Sunday. It's much easier to just say "my god says so". Depending on the person, it also often gives much higher chances of them respecting your way of life.

I embrace the Christian concept of the seventh day of the week free from work, having arrived here in a completely non-religious way. It's one of the things that made me convinced that there is some value in religion, despite all the corruption and misguided dogmatism on the surface.

paweladamczuk··on Google to pause Gemini image generation of people after issues
I agree that it's a meaningful experience to have as a white person.

I don't like your suggesting that the AI model beign human-adjusted to exclude people of a certain race is not "ACTUAL" racism.

paweladamczuk··on The Uncomfortable – a collection of deliberately inconvenient objects
I wonder if the site is deliberately inconvenient as well, being so susceptible to an influx of requests (not functional atm). I appreciate the irony.
paweladamczuk··on Google Cuts Jobs in Engineering and Other Divisions
In Poland most people scoff at any mention of unions for software developers. I think this is because we're still in the phase of quick SWE salary growth powered in large part by the best performers in the field being good negotiators in salary talks with incoming foreign capital. They drive the companies' labor cost expectations up and it benefits everybody in the field.

There's also a huge disparity between the SWE salaries and the rest of the society in Poland, I can imagine fears that unionization overall would flatten out those differences.

Another factor is that in places where we have unions (leftover fields still highly tied to the government, e.g. teachers) they tend to not function very well in practice (not enough employee advocacy, unhealthy level of union politics affecting people's outcomes in the workplace etc.).

Lastly, we're still pretty fresh to the whole capitalism game as a country, so we're scared of anything that resembles a step backwards.

This does not compute for me.

paweladamczuk··on Mario Maker 2 API
I find it puzzling that stuff like this is allowed to continue while Nintendo tries to remove gameplay videos on Youtube.

I'm glad people do it. Just curious about the legal considerations.

paweladamczuk··on The rise of the forever renters
Do you have a non-paywalled alternative? The archived versions don't seem to work.
paweladamczuk··on Goodbye, clean code (2020)
I think it's so specific to a given codebase that it's hard to give advice that generalizes well.

I have the same feelings as you here, I often feel a little lost trying to decide how much duplication is appropriate in a given case.

I try to not overthink it in the difficult cases. There are many other places in code where it's more obvious, because you can see the history of how people worked with the code, what was the frequency of changes and edge cases added to it etc.

Often it's also just about the readability of the code, I tend to go by the "how confusing it will be for the next person if I defuplicate this code in a smart way" metric.

paweladamczuk··on Blackmagic Camera for iPhone
I recorded two takes with exact same settings except one was ISO ~1500 and the other ISO ~3000. Shouldn't the second take be around twice as bright as the first one? The change in brightness is hardly noticeable.

I suppose this is the same case as every other camera app I've ever tested on Android and iOS, such granular settings like ISO are just not accessible by the system APIs available to the app. In that case though, I'd expect the app to at least not lie to me.

Can someone confirm or deny this? I don't know much about photography nor iOS so I might just be confused.

paweladamczuk··on Google Maps has become an eyesore
The video that autoplays on this website is infuriating.
paweladamczuk··on Recovering secret keys from devices using video footage of their power LED
For those wondering how they could fill the entire frame with the LED when the webcam was 16 meters away: the webcam had 25x optical zoom.
paweladamczuk··on Average color of the NYC sky every 5 minutes
I wonder how the camera was calibrated in terms of white balance (if at all).

I have this idea to implement in my house: a sensor that would measure temperature of the light outside and set the lights inside to the same temperature. Getting this measurement right seems to be non-trivial. Though maybe it wouldn't have to be exact in terms of physical units, a pair of sensors calibrated together (one for outside, one for inside) might achieve the desired result too.

paweladamczuk··on A visual book recommender
This is really cool!

I wish the accompanying article was longer. I can't fully grasp how it was done because I don't know enough about the concepts mentioned.

paweladamczuk··on I lost everything that made me love my job through Midjourney
Instead of grinding away over a piece of code, I will get to talk to people more?

Doesn't sound like such a bad deal to me.

I get your point, of course. I just think communication can be like a craft, challenging and rewarding. I try to frame things positively, it helps me stay motivated at work.

paweladamczuk··on Git branches are named sequences of commits
I'm pretty sure every person who says "branches are nothing but refs" understands why they are called branches.

They just want you (and others) to learn. This is an important piece of puzzle that many people miss.

Would you sacrifice all those (other people's) learning opportunities just so that you don't get annoyed?

paweladamczuk··on Microsoft is now injecting full-size ads on Chrome website
Related: I recently opened a link from Outlook on Android. It asked me which browser to choose: Chrome or Edge. I didn't even have Edge installed on my device. The promot seemed to try to look like Android system prompt, but it suggested installing missing Edge browser.
paweladamczuk··on Meta to ask many managers to become individual contributors or leave
Don't managers have enough work on their plate already? Looking at my past and current worplaces (granted, none of them are Meta), I can't imagine juggling individual contributions and managerial responsibilities.

Personally, I think a manager's job (in a healthy organization) is important enough to let them of the hook in terms of individual contributions.

paweladamczuk··on Tell HN: DEI initiatives undermine the self esteem of PoC within a company
I don't like any policies based on gender or skin color.

I also don't like that my gender and skin color determine how OK it is for me to say that.

paweladamczuk··on ChatGPT Plus
Does anyone know about any privacy guarantees with the Plus tier?

I would use ChatGPT more in my day-to-day programming tasks but I don't really feel comfortable putting proprietary code into an OpenAI-owned service.

paweladamczuk··on Ask HN: What are you working on this year?
Trying to make an academic article dashboard for personal use.

Something that would let me select a couple of academic journals and display latest papers published in them, along with abstracts.

I can't even find a free API to reliably get abstracts. After spending an hour reading the docs and failing to understand the monetization model, I refuse to use Elsevier's APIs.

I will probably use Crossref's API and just not display abstracts at all. I will put links to publisher's site and to Sci-Hub in the dashboard items.

paweladamczuk··on Acorn, our open source precision farming rover
The technology is really cool and I'm glad there are people doing such work and sharing it with others.

Personally I am not a fan of the way the project is presented, though.

paweladamczuk··on I gave ChatGPT the 117 question, eight dimensional PolitiScales test
I wonder whether baking in the inequality of Internet access is worse than baking in the characteristics of the subset of humans that took the specific test.

Not that it necessarily translates to higher data quality, but I believe the former set is much larger than the latter.
