I am a UI designer and front end developer residing in Austin, TX. Feel free to contact me for any reason:

If you mean homeless shelters, yes, but they're horrible and most homeless (or underhoused) people would rather live in a tent than go there. The justifications given are usually assault, thievery, and not being able to bring any personal possessions. I can understand why someone wouldn't want to stay in a shelter if it meant leaving all of their belongings unattended (if you're homeless you probably don't have a storage space or a friend's garage).
I was born in the US and lived abroad for 10 years before returning recently. It was a big and very demoralizing culture shock when I returned and, being in the habit of being friendly to strangers, saw how withdrawn and mistrusting people here have become. More so because I'm in Austin, TX, which is widely reported to be a friendly city. Everyone is so obsessed with work and virtue signalling. I didn't notice how competitive Americans are until I had a frame of reference to make the comparison. Living in South and Central America, my impression was that people are far more accepting regardless of whether you are a career professional or a not, or your hobbies or political alignment. In Belize I made a dozen good friends within six months of arriving, and I haven't made a single friend in three years here. I've been extremely depressed since I returned. I'm considering leaving again now that the lockdown has made remote work easier to come by (which was the primary reason I returned to the US in the first place). I'm not trying to slander Americans, and I understand that you can't make sweeping generalizations about any group of people, but the pressure and stress of our society is overwhelming.
You definitely are making a moral argument, even if that isn't your intention. There is no meaningful way to define "outside the norm", so it becomes a synonym for "unnatural" and a proxy for individual prejudices. Homosexuality is statistically "outside the norm", and conservative heterosexuals use this logic to support gay conversion therapy and other bigotry. You can overindulge in any dopamine-producing activity, so the same can be said for sex, eating, drinking, smoking, etc. The particular type of sex you enjoy is as irrelevant as the brand of whiskey you prefer.
I didn't downvote you, but "I believe the research supports my position" is functionally equivalent to "that's my gut feeling". I'd be interested in seeing any research you've encountered that caused you to arrive at this conclusion.
To be fair, some people of all genders get their kicks from being sexually dominated. The issue is knowing where the other person’s limits are and having good communication. This becomes a problem when people find discussing their sexual preferences embarrassing, even with their partners. My sex life improved greatly when I started asking my partners if they have any fantasies and exploring them together. Sometimes porn can help people discover things that they otherwise would have been too shy to bring up. However, If you’re watching porn five times per day and find yourself less and less stimulated by IRL sex, you need a detox.
I’ll give my counter-anecdote. I have made three close friends at work who I frequently talk to about relationship issues, etc, and would happily help them move a couch if they asked. One of them is currently my roommate. I’m 41, so these things can happen as an adult too. It might be different if I had my own family though.
One of my most frustrating interview experiences was when the lead engineer constantly interrupted me in the middle of my answers, clearly looking to get an answer that confirmed his existing opinions, then stopped the interview because we were out of time. He didn’t let me finish answering a single question, then rejected me because my technical knowledge was “too shallow”. I’m glad I never had to work with the guy.
How much game piracy happens these days? Since steam became such a good distribution platform and my internet connection got fast I haven’t even thought about pirating a game. AAA titles are expensive, but there aren’t a ton of them released every year, and downloading cracked installers is a huge security risk.
I think it goes deeper than that. They practically defined the 2010s electro genre, with heavy use of aggressive synthesizers, drum machines, and vocoders for nearly all the vocals. RAM was cleaner, more understated, and very, very slick. You could be forgiven for thinking it was a completely different band. Of course all interpretation of musical genre is subjective. :)
I upvoted you because people shouldn't be downvoting you for having a different opinion. People, downvotes are for low effort comments, not because you disagree!
I’m in Austin, without power for almost 48 hours now. There’s ice in my roommate’s bedroom. It’s my birthday tomorrow, and I’m hearing that we won’t have power until Thursday at the earliest. I’ve gone beyond furious to just horribly depressed.
There is a massive population outflow from high COL coastal cities to smaller interior cities happening right now. SF, NY, LA, and Seattle are all shrinking.
It will take 6-8 weeks after large scale vaccination to start seeing the results. Deaths usually occur six weeks after infection, and it takes a week to reach full immunity after vaccination.
This is a very active area of research, and I'm pretty confident it will be a standard feature within the next five years. There are also light field displays, which are super interesting, but I'm pretty sure they are cost prohibitive for consumer devices.
They were recently partially or wholly purchased. There was a big stink about it because the other company had ties to Israeli intelligence or something. I may be misremembering the details, but I'm to lazy to look it up on my phone. I recently switched from PIA to mullvad and I can definitely recommend it. It feels more transparent to me, and the client app is well done.
I removed that last sentence from the post as I didn't want anyone to misunderstand and think they actually asked if he votes Republican. My point was that asking the interviewee if he supports social justice movements is a very simple proxy for asking his political affiliation in the two party circus we have here in the US.
It should be possible to look at the source code of known compromised extensions and put together a list of heuristics that could automate part of the process. Minifiers make it more difficult though.
I'll bite. I play D&D remotely with my friends. I need to be able to have low latency voice and video communication, but I also need control over the audio codec and bit rate. Zoom and other video conferencing solutions use codecs optimized for voice, which makes music and sound effects sound like a Himalayan AM radio broadcast. Twitch and Youtube give me control over the video and audio quality, but the latency is 5+ seconds even on low latency mode. I tried running voice over zoom and video and music over youtube, but then drawing on the map is 5+ seconds out of sync with me saying "look here".
