paulkon··on Google Voice is killing SMS voicemail transcripts and Chrome Extension texting
https://www.bandwidth.com/

Google voice, Skype, Zoom and others use their network.

paulkon··on You Say What You Eat
Jony Ive would agree. The dichotomy is strong.
paulkon··on Ask HN: Should I exhibit my rough early-stage product?
Would you be comfortable sharing the product you worked on and a postmortem on why it didn't succeed?

I'd find it helpful to learn from as I'm in the process of getting early feedback from businesses to validate or tweak my own tiny saas idea.

paulkon··on Have We Hit Peak Podcast?
What do you feel is missing in anchor?

And do you think more podcasts will be done with remote guests? Any good tools you recommend for getting good audio or video in that case?

paulkon··on Monte Carlo methods – Why it's a bad idea to go to the casino
Please do, I'd love to read more about this!
paulkon··on Supreme Court rules federal courts cannot invalidate partisan gerrymandering [pdf]
What's the distinction between small 'c' Constitution and the formal document in this context?
paulkon··on Next steps toward Go 2
LOC reduction of 10% with check/handle statements and 20% with try()/defer along with somewhat reduced clarity of what will happen on error.

I'm not a fan of the verbosity at present either, but seems like the check/handle syntax is less direct and the try()/defer func syntax is less flexible.

paulkon··on At Japan’s cliffs, he's walked more than 600 people back from the edge (2018)
I've had to adopt the "couldn't care less" approach when someone directs what I feel to be an unsubstantiated claim in my direction.

Of course when the moment has passed, I'll mull over it if the person is usually friendly and then work through the claim like a detached third party to figure out how I should really feel/think about or act on what they said.

It's the only approach that has successfully worked to keep my feelings from obliterating my psyche for the rest of the day/week if a confrontation like that does happen.

I keep them insulated and examine them later.

paulkon··on US Senate report on Equifax breach [pdf]
The financial markets are for businesses, not people.
paulkon··on New Evidence of Age Bias in Hiring, and a Push to Fight It
What geographical area do you work in? Any skill in particular that you find helps you stand out?
paulkon··on New Evidence of Age Bias in Hiring, and a Push to Fight It
My deepest sympathies to you and your family.

You mentioned that you exited a few companies you ran. If I may ask, were you able to save any money from the companies you exited?

paulkon··on New Evidence of Age Bias in Hiring, and a Push to Fight It
So you're saying that older workers being in the position of looking for a job are signaling that they're a scratched off lottery ticket for which the expected value of a jackpot is zero?
paulkon··on New Evidence of Age Bias in Hiring, and a Push to Fight It
Yeah at least make it subtle... /s
paulkon··on The decline of the family has unleashed an epidemic of loneliness
You broke the first rule of fight club.
paulkon··on The SaaS Opportunity of Unbundling Excel
Isn't that what Zapier's Excel integrations aim to provide?
paulkon··on Remote working – Bringing sanity to mind and lessons worth learning
Have any other tips on how to fight the decay in reputation while working remote?

I would consider the largest risk with remote work to be "out of sight, out of mind" for consideration of promotions or even job referrals by colleagues.

I very much have the personality for remote work and largely like to figure out things on my own but the drawbacks feel significant enough to keep me in the office for now...

paulkon··on House spending panel drops U.S. ban on gene-edited babies
If there was a gene for 'hustle' and 'street smarts' it would make a difference across the spectrum of social classes and environments.
paulkon··on 5M Bid request/s, 2ms max response time – The Road to Damascus
This is why federal research and development agencies should pay higher salaries to attract said engineers.

Breakthroughs achieved would be funded by taxpayers and customers of these agencies and the patents for technology produced would be more likely enter the public domain.

paulkon··on The US reportedly considering blacklisting Chinese surveillance firm Hikvision
I've had to unbrick gray-market hikvision cameras that were flashed with hikvision firmware for a friend. Best to keep them on their own subnet along with a small zfs cluster and drop all new outgoing packets.
paulkon··on MicroG – Re-implementation of proprietary Android apps and libraries
Mine started to boot loop a couple years back and it was out of warranty by then. I sent LG a mobile device repair request and the rep sent a prepaid label. So I wiped it, removed the sim and mailed it to their US repair center.

I got it back about ~2 weeks later in working condition, at no cost. LG is repairing any Nexus 5X for the bootloop issue outside warranty. Apparently it's due to incomplete contact of the heatsink with the CPU.

paulkon··on Preventing the Collapse of Civilization [video]
I'm reminded of this explanation that was posted on HN couple months back https://twitter.com/trevorsumner/status/1106934362531155974

Seems like it was a physical engineering and business problem and software was added to (inadequately) compensate.

paulkon··on Canada Border Services seizes lawyer's phone, laptop for not sharing passwords
They could also refuse entry or detain you if your not a citizen for obstruction of justice.

These laws that give border security unfettered search and seizure authority along with issuing punishment for non-compliance is the problem.

paulkon··on Canada Border Services seizes lawyer's phone, laptop for not sharing passwords
I imagine an service which makes an image of your system and launches it as a remote VM that you can access or store to an encrypted external disk.

If your encrypted disk gets through then you can restore your data or boot from it.

If not then you can remote into your machine in the cloud or download the image if you have access to a fast connection at your destination.

paulkon··on Canada Border Services seizes lawyer's phone, laptop for not sharing passwords
if a solution were to be created, could the company be held liable for obstruction of justice via aiding and abetting?

I guess this could be taken care of with an extended terms of service which lay out how the product shouldn't be used to prevent search and seizure by government officials...

paulkon··on Have a personal web site
I'm gonna print that out and point to it when my friend asks what I do at work all day.
paulkon··on Spent 50 hours on a take-home assignment only to be ghosted
Are you able to work remotely as well? If you don't mind, what percentage of annual is stock options?
paulkon··on Ask HN: Sources of remote dev work with minimal human interaction?
Could you elaborate on the overtime culture you've experienced at said faang company?
paulkon··on Ask HN: Sources of remote dev work with minimal human interaction?
Seems like the team leads at Microsoft including Dave Cutler, etc. all the way up to Bill Gates rewarded the meritocratic process more than any other company at the time.
paulkon··on Hacker Finds He Can Remotely Kill Car Engines After Breaking into GPS Tracking
Do cars have something equivalent to an airplane black box?
paulkon··on Ask HN: Has there been any academic research into software interviewing?
In that case, why use a whiteboard instead of a collaborative text editor like coderpad, repl.it, or even gnu screen?

Testing in an environment completely different from 'production' isn't going to give a super strong signal on collaborative problem solving imo.
