pauljaworski··on The iPhone SE was the best phone Apple ever made, and now it’s dead
Internals? Duh. It came out years earlier.

Design? Nah. Some of us like a phone that fits comfortably in our hand and pocket, and doesn't look like every other phone out there.

pauljaworski··on The Four Thieves Vinegar Collective
Right, that bothered me a little too.
pauljaworski··on Why I’m Using a Flip Phone
>Have some self restraint

Might be a good idea to read a bit on psychology. Your experience != everyone else's experience.

pauljaworski··on Ask HN: What does “DevOps” mean to you?
Not trying to discourage more discussion here, but I actually recently wrote an article on this exact topic that I think you'd find helpful: https://stackshare.io/posts/experts-explain-what-is-devops
pauljaworski··on The Strange Brain of the World’s Greatest Solo Climber (2016)
I've always been in awe of Alex and thought, like the others in the "peanut gallery", that there must be something different about the way his brain functions. Very interesting to find out what that is!
pauljaworski··on How Much Money Do You Save by Cooking at Home?
Priceonomics runs a service that produces interesting content for their clients based on their data. That's what this is.

Most content on HN would probably fall under your definition of "long form advertising".

pauljaworski··on Show HN: CareerCombo – Find careers that combine your different passions
Not giving you my email address without seeing some listings to prove this works first. I imagine others feel the same.
pauljaworski··on Ask HN: React Native is dead, how you would build mobile app nowadays?
That's just not true at all.
pauljaworski··on Is Lightroom still best for processing raws?
Lightroom is a pretty fantastic tool. $10/mo is well worth it if you're at all serious about photography. I haven't ever felt a need to explore alternatives.
pauljaworski··on Show HN: Open Logos – Free logos for open source projects
It's a big improvement over having no logo at all. As someone who spends a chunk of time adding new open source tools to a directory, I'm thrilled this exists.
pauljaworski··on Ask HN: How do you manage your mental health?
Primarily with preventative measures:

- Exercise: weightlifting 4x per week

- Meditation: 15 minutes daily in the AM

- Diet: Paleo-ish, I initially did the "4 Hour Body" diet to lose some weight and noticed I felt better all-around not eating bread/heavy carbs. On the other hand, bread is delicious. Mostly, I just try to avoid tons of sugar/insulin spikes.

Being disciplined about these things is pretty critical for me.

pauljaworski··on Ask HN: Boring businesses which make non-boring money?
Very large, haha. I know they've decreased over time as competition has moved in, but 2-3 years ago they were selling items that cost ~$1.50 to make for $25. They also run pretty lean from a personnel standpoint.
pauljaworski··on Ask HN: Boring businesses which make non-boring money?
My friends own a "vape juice" company - one of the larger ones I think. They're currently doing around $10-15M in revenue after starting just a few years ago.
pauljaworski··on Adobe to Acquire Magento
Their software isn't terrible.
pauljaworski··on Ask HN: What business would you start in 2018?
You're stuck in the past, friend. 2018 is all about mushroom-tea-fueled, AI-powered, IOT devices on blockchain.
pauljaworski··on nde – The IDE of the future, today
From a marketing perspective, you should absolutely have some sort of landing page that explains what I just clicked on before telling me to "wait" because the "application" is loading.
pauljaworski··on NFL Releases Finite Element Helmet Models
I feel like removing helmets from the game entirely would actually be safer than improving helmets. The helmet just creates this false sense of safety that encourages using your head as a point of contact.
pauljaworski··on Icelandic language battles threat of 'digital extinction'
That was not my experience. I spent 3 weeks in Iceland, and only met one person who was not fluent in English (even they were plenty conversational).

You're right that Akureyri is not a small town for Iceland, though.

pauljaworski··on Show HN: Booknshelf – Discover great books on different topics
What's the significance of the n? It looks like a typo.
pauljaworski··on Seattle Is Opening First in U.S. “Safe Injection Facility” for Heroin Addicts
In addition to what the others have said, black tar is essentially heroin that is made by skipping a few of the steps in the "standard" heroin synthesis process. Whichever cartel controls West Coast distribution decided that was good enough for them, and customers would buy it regardless. I'm actually curious as to why the other cartels bother producing powder heroin at all.
pauljaworski··on Seattle Is Opening First in U.S. “Safe Injection Facility” for Heroin Addicts
Fentanyl is actually being synthesized by the Mexican cartels now and added to the heroin before it even makes it to the street dealers. It's getting really crazy.
pauljaworski··on Seattle Is Opening First in U.S. “Safe Injection Facility” for Heroin Addicts
The Midwest/East Coast really need this, since that is where all the powder, fentanyl-laced heroin goes. People are dropping like flies in those regions of the country, while I would imagine the West Coast, where black tar heroin is sold, hasn't seen as much of an increase in overdoses/deaths.
pauljaworski··on Box Breathing
I had the good fortune of learning yoga from a teacher whose core focus was on the breath. He taught this technique and other breathing techniques first and foremost before any movements ever came into play. The difference in the relaxation, stress-relief, etc., between that and the way I see yoga taught at these chain studios is incredible. I wish that was the standard, but obviously much fewer people have the patience to learn this way.
pauljaworski··on Time to Take a Stand
It would be a pretty powerful move if the big tech companies all participated in a blackout of their sites/services in protest.
pauljaworski··on Established education providers v new contenders
I'm very lucky to have started learning programming before these companies were figuring out their business models. I took the very first Udacity courses when they were completely free and was able to launch my career as a software engineer with the knowledge I gained from them. I was making barely enough money to survive at the time and had no idea if I actually wanted to make a career out of programming. If I had been forced to commit such a large amount of money at the time, I highly doubt I would have continued forward with the classes, and worse, they would have started to feel like work instead of fun, which was the issue I had with traditional college in the first place.

I sincerely hope that there continues to be sources of high quality course materials available without the risk and stress of payment attached so that other kids can have the opportunities I had when I was getting started.

pauljaworski··on Ask HN: What have you achieved in 2016?
About me - I got hired as the founding engineer of a startup, designed and built 80% of an entire consumer facing app by myself, learning a ton along the way. I'm very proud of what I accomplished and think that it is a very solid app with plenty of potential to scale. I met a beautiful girl who I fell in love with and got to spend 3 weeks hiking and camping through Iceland with.

Fallback - My job was outsourced to a team of Eastern European devs, because it was "taking too long" for me to build everything by myself. My girlfriend left me a few weeks later.

Is it just me or does this comment make no sense at all?
pauljaworski··on A Method I’ve Used to Eliminate Bad Tech Hires
This is literally the only way I've gotten job offers. I'm a very competent programmer, but when I'm asked to solve some silly puzzle with someone staring over my shoulder, I freeze under pressure and can not think at all.

Luckily not everyone thinks solving leetcode problems is a good way to hire.

pauljaworski··on Overview of JavaScript ES6 features
This is what makes Eslint so great. If you extend Airbnb's (or write your own very strict) config, it will really enforce best practices for things like this.

I think running eslint --fix will even change your "let"s to "const"s where appropriate, but don't quote me on that.
