paulintrognon··on Climate change has setnetters worried about Alaska’s sockeye
Well that's also true on a world scale. Oil & gas are both our best friends and worst enemies.

(On this topic I recommend VlogBrother's video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibg1-0gfwjI)

If it is hysteria, why do you think most world countries signed the Paris agreement to keep global warming below 2° Celsius?
paulintrognon··on Economic Growth Is Incompatible with Biodiversity Conservation
Does this apply to energy though, which is the main cause of climate change? Economical growth seems quite correlated to energy consumption, and I have yet to see serious articles showing how energy consumption can be decoupled from economical growth. And of course by that I mean world-wide. Developped countries delocalizing production (thus energy consumption) to China should be taken in account.
paulintrognon··on Show HN: Open – Free React landing page template
The site looks great but you should have used a static site generator (like GatsbyJS) or at least a server-side rendering framework (like Next.js[1]) rather than create-react-app.

There is no need for this kind of website to be generated client-side.

[1] The latest version of Next.js does static site generation. Which is trully fantastic: you get all the power of React but the site is served as HTML. The generated site can even be accessible with JavaScript disabled!

paulintrognon··on Ask HN: Who Is Firing?
That's true because in Europe (at least in France) there is the concept of direct salary and indirect (or redistributed) salary.

In France if you earn 50k/month, your boss actually pays you ~100k. 50k is going in your pocket, and the other 50k goes to a centralized fund which pays for healthcare, pensions, and unemployment compensations ; things you would have paid for yourself otherwise.

People in France complains a LOT about those 50k that are "lost" but in fact there are "forced savings", or "indirect salary", what they don't realize is that not having a centralized compulsory saving system end would up costing them so, so much more.

paulintrognon··on Are Tests Necessary in TypeScript?
If you don't have tests for everything, how do you check that everything's still working fine? Because the only alternative I see to not thoroughly test code is to check the app by hand to make sure nothing's broken, which is, well... Not as robust as having it checked by a machine.
paulintrognon··on Colornames.org – A collaborative effort to name all 16.7M colors
It's a great project from a great idea, but I'm a little desapointed that it seems to be turned into a joke contest.

For example, most voted name for 000009 is "Really Dark Blue ", which does not really work...

paulintrognon··on Ask HN: How can I pick a side project and stick with it?
My way of overcomming this situation is to use the MVP process for my side projects: your side project needs to be as simple, as featureless as it possibly can, so it can be shipped to your friends quickly, before you get tired of it.

It has worked really well for me: simple projects are more likely to be finished, and when you show them to other people, their feedback/enthousiasm fuel your energy to add more features and spend more time on the project.

paulintrognon··on Global warming has begun to make Norway warmer and wetter
I live in France next to the Alpes and climate change is really real here. Next week it's expecting to rain on the ski slopes. In the middle of February! Lots of glaciers are gone. Many of my mountain climbing friends say they can't do the runs they used to because the terrain is getting too unpredictable.

It's quite scary.

paulintrognon··on Global warming has begun to make Norway warmer and wetter
There age tons of factual articles about climate change. Though it does not interest many people.

Kudos for those guys for trying to tell the story differently in a hope to reach a broader audience.

paulintrognon··on Can We Have Prosperity Without Growth?
I'm not saying "let's just despair and do nothing", of course we should focus resources on innovation. In fact that's what we're doing right now. But let's not focus _all_ of our resources on a hope.

Don't you think it's safe to assume that technologies might not save us and that we should work on some alternatives, just in case the first scenario doesn't work?

> collapse comes from a lack of ingenuity, a sclerotic loss of the ability for a society to solve problems.

So you're saying that the _only_ way of preventing collapse is by technological advance? And that we should not try to make sociaty sustainable without growth, or at least to do some reasearch on how that might be possible?

paulintrognon··on Can We Have Prosperity Without Growth?
Empirically, economic growth has always been related to consumption of energy and raw materials. One explanation is the Rebound effect[1]

Maybe theorically they can be decoupled, but we have yet to see that in the real world.

More about it: https://eeb.org/library/decoupling-debunked/

paulintrognon··on Can We Have Prosperity Without Growth?
> Human ingenuity is key

That's a bet that many of us are not willing to take. Sure, you can imagine that a future technology we haven't thought of yet will save growth, but I think it's very important to think about scenarios when that won't happen. Are we really wanting to bet humanity's future on just "technology"?

If you read Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed[1], you'll realize that socities that did collapse were over confident. Let's no repeat that mistake.

> The only country I know that comes close is Switzerland

Another example is Bhutan, which implemeneted Gross National Happiness [1] as their primary goal.

paulintrognon··on Can We Have Prosperity Without Growth?
Because that's still science fiction. We have enough ressources to sustain current population/economic system for a few decades, a century at most (i'm thinking gas, rare earth, phosphore, etc). It's been 50 years since we got to the moon and we're still stuck on low-orbit earth. Even getting to Mars is still very very hard. Do you think we'll be technologically ready to colonize an earth-like planet by the end of this century?

While we can't rule it out fure sure, it would be crazy to bet on that possibility.
