paulcnichols··on Extracting training data from ChatGPT
Well said. Like going for a long walk in the woods and getting lost completely in tangential thinking.
paulcnichols··on Hey, computer, make me a font
Inevitable in a good way. Keep going! There's gold here.
paulcnichols··on Ask HN: Which startups have the most interesting pivot stories?
Nice burn
paulcnichols··on The Breeder's Equation
Spicy topic!
paulcnichols··on Are daily standups hurting your team?
Haha, I totally agree.
paulcnichols··on Are daily standups hurting your team?
Ah yes, the mythical high ownership, high autonomy engineer that just magically does what you need and also wants to work for you and your company. Sure, no stand ups required then. Or how about the mythical perfectly written ticket with zero ambiguity about anything. Yep. Total autonomy. The rub is everything about building software is imperfect. The only place perfection exists is in the mind of “senior” engineers gazing lovingly at their own code.
paulcnichols··on Is this the simplest (and most surprising) sorting algorithm?
A+ click bait paper title.
paulcnichols··on Lockdown, distance learning likely to increase social class achievement gap
I will actively do everything within my power to give my kids an “unequal” advantage. Sorry not sorry.
paulcnichols··on Uber prices seem to increase when phone battery is low
If true, genius level asshole design.
paulcnichols··on Stripe Identity
Was this product from an acquisition or home grown?
paulcnichols··on Ask HN: What underestimated technologies will dominate within 5 years?
Is this not here already?
paulcnichols··on Things Come Apart
Now do society.
paulcnichols··on Uber CEO says its service will probably shut down temporarily in California
Decoupling “benefits” like healthcare and retirement from employment is the real issue. Should be a government responsibility, given out equally, paid for by taxes.
paulcnichols··on Why are there so many humans?
What was up with that confirm shaming? Weirdest prompt ever.
paulcnichols··on San Francisco, Silicon Valley rents plunge amid downturn
Very insightful. Parking money in Bay Area real estate still seems like a good idea.
paulcnichols··on Don’t require a user to be interested twice: lessons on reducing signup friction
This is true, but I think there's something to be said about the strength of your product market fit if users put up with really shitty user experience.
paulcnichols··on San Francisco Residents Are Leaving at an Unprecedented Rate
More content marketing
paulcnichols··on Dropbox ignore file or folder in beta
Rejoice!
paulcnichols··on The Effect of Cold Showering on Health and Work (2016)
Related, being really cold is one of the reasons surfing (at least in Northern California) feels so great. The rest of the day afterwards nothing hurts, assuming you didn't hurt yourself ;)
paulcnichols··on Clearview AI helps law enforcement match photos of people to their online images
The counterpart to this dystopian future is other people taking photos/video without your consent. Just as a social norm I wish that was illegal first, and if it already is, enforced more.

Apple and android should blur faces by default until other people explicitly give consent to be photographed. That's the future I want to see.

paulcnichols··on Comma Two Devkit
I agree. Its like they are intentionally being opaque about what the device does.
paulcnichols··on Show HN: CalmJobs.io – Work with companies who values work-life balance
Good concept. Props for testing your idea so quickly. This is how its done folks.
paulcnichols··on America’s Air Quality Worsens, Ending Years of Gains, Study Says
Re Mercury, on the San Jose side isn't there an old Mercury mine (Almaden Quicksilver Park). I'm not saying the fog doesn't carry anything bad but I think the region has a history too.
paulcnichols··on Anduril, a startup from Oculus founder Palmer Luckey, now valued at $1B
This is indeed a really great podcast. I'm sympathetic to his points that 1) the US is falling behind and 2) that in a strong democracy policy plays a big role in shaping the technology.
paulcnichols··on Airbnb’s ‘Guerrilla War’ Against Local Governments
I love that hostcompliance.com exists. Capitalism at work.
paulcnichols··on Open source Molten salt nuclear reactor design
I think this a great example of why the “great filter” is ahead of us. Our quest for knowledge seems to grow faster than the dampening of our urge for violence.
paulcnichols··on Startups Rejecting Venture Capital
Good for you! Doesn’t seem like a hard fork in the road though. You could probably raise a round much easier on way better terms now that you’ve proved the business. Maybe you’ll hit a point where the infusion of money really would make a difference.
paulcnichols··on The Internet as Television
Maybe I wasn’t hardcore enough, but my youth started trapped in AOL’s walled garden. It took a long time to realize there was an internet outside of it.
paulcnichols··on Show HN: Stock Trading from Google Spreadsheet
Cool, but first thought was a sarcastic “What could possibly wrong?”
paulcnichols··on Ask HN: Any ICO that actually delivers what it promises?
I must have missed this. I really appreciate the intersection of art, satire and technology in the concept.
