pauby··on The U.K. government is close to eroding encryption worldwide
The EFF are very US focused and I feel they often pay lip service elsewhere. It's disappointing and why I stopped donating.

As another commenter said, nobody in the UK is going to protest over this. As a downbeaten kingdom (in my opinion), we have no fight left in most of us. People will sigh and move to another app en masse.

The issue I have with all of this is that we think a law is going to make people who break the law not break the law.

The only people who this affects is people who everyday people chatting to their family.

The ones this is claimed to be fighting don't, by and large, use WhatsApp and the like, so will make no difference to how they operate. The one off they catch who does naively use it, does not justify surveilling the entire UK.

pauby··on Goodreads was the future of book reviews, then Amazon bought it
If terminating an interview early 'burns a bridge', then I've 'dodged a bullet'.
pauby··on After September 1, 2023, all Gfycat content and data will be deleted
Strangely their 'Pro' page is still listing subscriptions https://gfycat.com/pro

(I haven't gone further than the login to try and actually purchase one).

pauby··on Lemmy now has over 2M users across 915 instances
A lot of people whine about Lemmy and federation. They can't see how it works? What happens if the server closes down? Which instance do I choose. All of this is answered with some reading.

If picking a server and understanding how it works is too much effort for you, then don't use it. You have had to put effort into understanding every single service you use. Lemmy, Mastodon, Kbin and other federated services are no different.

If it's too much, stay with Twitter or Reddit. It's okay.

pauby··on We Changed Our Lives Because of Our Remote Jobs. Now It’s All Crumbling
> Additionally, all of Europe is turning racist more and more and more.

Facts to back up that wide generic claim?

pauby··on Reddit’s blackout protest is set to continue indefinitely
That's assuming the goal is to get to 'mass market'.

Lemmy existed before the Reddit exodus. It will exist when they all go back.

pauby··on Google doesn’t want employees working remotely anymore
If you believe that you are less effective as a manager of a remote team than a office one, that's a manager problem not a location one

Managing a team remotely requires different skills and greater trust. But it's still easily done.

Don't force your team back to the office because you find it easier to manage them.

I say this as somebody who manages a wholly remote team from across the world, 5 countries and timezones.

pauby··on HP disables customers’ printers if they use ink cartridges from cheaper rivals
If people stop buying these printers, then you're voting with your wallet. But people won't. They continue to buy these printers and HP will continue to do this as their sales are telling them it's good.

I accept there is more to this than that, but it's the first step.

pauby··on Scaling up the Prime Video audio/video monitoring service and reducing costs
It's already on the Wayback Machine https://web.archive.org/web/20230504060528/https://www.prime...
pauby··on Microsoft quietly supported legislation to make it easier to fix devices
This sounds like a great intro to a book. I'm hooked.
pauby··on The Windows 11 Trash Party
That's why there's Office 365. It runs everywhere there is a modern browser.

Even Linux.

pauby··on To comply with a new sesame allergy law, some businesses add – sesame
> The FDA doesn't allow precautionary labeling (e.g., "may contain traces of..." or "manufactured in a facility that also...") in place of "proper cleaning procedures".
pauby··on CAN Injection: Keyless car theft
In 'true' / 'raw' capitalism. But that's not what we have. Because it's not as profitable.
pauby··on The day Windows died
I was very much of the same opinion until the start of the year when I went back to Linux (Manjaro this time, Kubuntu last time) for the precise reasons listed in the article.

Manjaro has caused me no more (and in some respects less) issues than Windows did. The biggest issue for me is finding equivalent software from what I had on Windows. In almost all cases, I've been successful.

Gaming is great so far. Same games.

> experts all over the internet are very condescending in general.

This is a dissapointing generalisation and not my experience. I've had nothing but support and help with any questions I have asked recently.

The Linux ecosystem is a different beast now and one I'd recommend to most people. It's not going to work for everybody but if your user case is not special, chances are you'll have a better time than the current Windows.

pauby··on Judge decides against Internet Archive
In Central Scotland, during the 70s and 80s, lunch time closing was the norm. Half day Wednesday was also very popular in some trades (butchers, grocers etc.) as it allowed working on a Saturday morning.

Back then, nothing was open on a Sunday.

In some parts of Scotland (the Western Isles for example) doing any work, hanging your washing out, cutting your grass etc. on a Sunday, to be violating the Sabbath. No laws. Just peer pressure from your neighbours. As you'd expect this is stronger in smaller villages than larger towns.

> Tell a non-techie there's a social media platform called "Mastodon" and they'll look at you funny,

They would look at you funny before Twitter was a thing too.

Or Instagram. Or Facebook.

People will figure it out. It becomes popular. It's not unknown.
