patejam··on Infineon chip solves Rubik’s Cube in 637 milliseconds
"It takes tremendous computing power to solve such a highly complex puzzle with a machine."

It doesn't. I can be done quickly on any conventional computer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optimal_solutions_for_Rubik%27...

The time is still impressive, but this doesn't showcase any real improvements to any technology.

patejam··on Facebook Posts Strong Profit and Revenue Growth
They've been profitable for like 7 years now.
patejam··on The driverless truck is coming, and it’s going to automate millions of jobs
I wouldn't be surprised if they start out with "last mile" drivers to deal with off-highway driving.
patejam··on AlphaGo beats Lee Sedol again in match 2 of 5
I think the idea is that AlphaGo decided that the "strong" moves, while it may have increased its lead, would have been more risky than moves that just fortified its current lead.
patejam··on American Students Know Almost Nothing About Their College Loans
Because college students are a much higher risk. You can argue that 8% is too high, but you can't argue that college students are more likely to pay back loans than big banks.
patejam··on 62% of Americans Have Under $1,000 in Savings, Survey Finds
If your mortgage interest rate is less than your investment account rate.
patejam··on Spacemacs – Emacs advanced kit focused on Evil
FWIW, I use Sublime/Jetbrain products for most of my programming and I always turn on vim keybindings. It isn't 100% the same as actual vim, but it is still faster than a mouse for me.
patejam··on The button: social experiment driving Reddit crazy
And now this will drive traffic to the subreddit and continue to slow down the progress to 0. :(
patejam··on Pure CSS3 calculator
I get that only when I'm zoomed in 110% on my browser. Zooming messes with the logic. I don't think it needs more work, it's just a fun demo.
patejam··on How Teens Really Use Apps
I think it's important to remember that Instagram is a part of Facebook. That bumps their market share up quite a bit.
patejam··on Send Money to Friends in Messenger
Well it's also 1.1 billion active users per month, so that makes it slightly better IMO.
patejam··on Straighter Teeth by Mail
I'm going to an orthodontist tomorrow for a consultation. The extra few thousand are well worth it in my opinion to get it done right without potentially damaging my teeth.
patejam··on Keurig 2.0 DRM Bypass
> Right now, writing code in PHP can hurt an engineer's reputation more than writing DRM code in any language. That's pretty ridiculous IMHO.

I mean, you just completely made that up.

patejam··on ImageMagick, four point perspective distortion in a video
My favorite us of this technique was at Hack Princeton a while back. Some people made an app that lets you take pictures of blackboards, automatically cropping and fixing the perspective of the board for later use.
patejam··on I've been programming since I was 10, but I don't feel like a "hacker"
I enjoy RMS's take on being a "hacker": http://www.stallman.org/articles/on-hacking.html

Specifically, "Playfully doing something difficult, whether useful or not, that is hacking."

patejam··on Your user agent
It hasn't been removed because of exactly what you say; it would break a lot of sites. If it is a change that breaks a good portion of the web, they rightfully shouldn't make that change.
patejam··on Google can use your name and photo alongside online ads
If it is only shared with the people who you originally shared it with, what is the problem?
patejam··on Yahoo brings back the Toolbar
This is actually not true at all. (Source: Intern this summer)
patejam··on About a Month at Yahoo
Nope. I'm an intern there and usually work ~10-6, call my girlfriend back home/hang out for a bit with people, eat, and go home. There's really no judging, everyone seems super chill.
patejam··on About a Month at Yahoo
Just to chime in, there is zero pressure at Yahoo to stay and eat dinner on campus. In fact, not too many people stay unless there was an event going on before hand or something. Most people just leave. But as you said, it depends on the company's culture.
patejam··on Chrome Inspector Detector
Ubuntu 12.10 with Cinnamon works.
patejam··on Chrome Inspector Detector
Doesn't work exclusively with the Chrome Inspector. Having the downloads bar at the bottom sets this off as well, for example.
patejam··on "Getting started with Ember.Js is easy." - No it isn't
It's quite simple and sufficient to say something along the lines of "You are right, we are working on this. In the mean time check out some example code here...".
patejam··on "Getting started with Ember.Js is easy." - No it isn't
Not a very good way to handle potential users. It is quite the turn off while deciding between different JS frameworks to have someone representing the codebase refusing to respond to a user's troubles.
patejam··on Bitcoin Tops $50USD on MtGox
And it is terrible for legitimizing them. Why should someone adopt Bitcoins as a currency if there's not a stable value? Bring in all of the security issues that have been popping up as its popularity has increased and I see a decline in Bitcoin adoption coming soon.

I don't think Bitcoins are the answer to the problems they are trying to solve.

patejam··on Father of all humankind is 340,000 years old
I'm not an expert, but I would assume X would have a genetic mutation that branches off of the lineage of X-1 and continues on, now technically being "human". Obviously this isn't a single person, but rather an estimate for the time period where this branching occurred.

Or something like that. How close am I?

patejam··on Bill Introduced to Re-Legalize Cell Phone Unlocking
Because it is completely reasonable for providers to give you a locked phone for a price subsidized by a 2 or so year contract. Nothing stops you from buying an unsubsidized, unlocked phone.
patejam··on Show HN: Bringing back IRC, built in three days on a bus from SF to Austin
IRC isn't about being anonymous. Its about having a simple protocol that makes chat portable and easy to make on the fly.
patejam··on After 40 hours of free mobile music, you will have to pay Pandora
So they're rolling back to their old payment structure? Sounds good, I was fine paying $0.99 sometimes when I went over.
patejam··on Reports of gunman inside MIT unfounded
