patd··on Pricenoia shuts down
My price comparison tool Shoptimate.com got hit a few months back. It's not Amazon only so I can keep the lights on but it sucks for Pricenoia.

Amazon has been changing the rules lately. They're not allowing installable software anymore and only allowing mobile apps that are not focused on shopping. They also refuse websites optimized for mobile. This is after they excluded affiliates over the state tax issues in the US.

Wikipedia says that Amazon gets 40% of their revenue from affiliates. They're probably dominant enough that they don't need to rely on affiliates as much as they used to.

patd··on Ask HN: Is a Chromebook suitable for web development?
I use an Acer C720P as a backup dev machine for a Django project.

With crouton you have access to traditional Unix tools so if most of what you need is command-line tools and a text editor, you can manage. It's not amazingly fast and the screen resolution is a bit limiting. But it's still a great machine : cheap, light and powerful enough for web dev. I don't regret buying one.

patd··on Show HN: See lower prices in your cart
Nicely done.

If you're not in the US, you can give a try to our extension Shoptimate [0]. It does not compare in your cart but at the product page.

patd··on Show HN: Automated Discounts on Amazon
From the numbers of my extension, Chrome users are more keen to install extensions. I believe that it's mainly because the Chrome Webstore makes it easier to find extension than Mozilla's.

VAT varies by country. However if you sell from one EU country to another EU country, depending on the volume (which I think also differ per pair of countries), you'll need to apply the seller's VAT (low volume of sales) or the buyer's VAT (high volume of sales)

patd··on Richest Bitcoin Addresses
Maybe one way to look at it is to compare it to owning some land. Some people are rich because their ancestors claimed a large piece a long long time ago. One could argue that they pulled out a lot of money out of thin air.
patd··on Show HN: I built a Chrome extension to donate to charities while on Amazon
You can give my extension a try : http://www.shoptimate.com
patd··on What happened to Priceonomics?
I'm building Shoptimate.com [1] and I'm in Europe. Amazon isn't as huge as in the US (and the multiple local Amazon sort of compete with each other).

But I also gave up on the website to build a browser extension. Shoptimate is bootstrapped and mainly active in Europe so I can execute more slowly and without the pressure of VC-money. But even then, it's a tough space.

patd··on Show HN: Find the cheapest Amazon for your books
Well done.

I'm building something slightly similar : http://www.shoptimate.com But it's browser extension, not a website and it's not limited to books or Amazon.

Note that shipping from a foreign country can lead to custom taxes.

patd··on Ask HN: Am I underpaid?
Don't forget that your cost of living (rent, food, ...) is probably lower in the Netherlands than in SF. And you get all the social benefit from a European country (cheaper healthcare, cheaper education, ...).

It's hard to compare US and European salaries.

patd··on The Summly deal makes no sense
1MM downloads is far from 1MM users. So it's not really a factor of five.
patd··on French ISP Removes Google Adsense From Websites
The article doesn't mention Google Analytics and I haven't seen a drop from my Free users in GA. Any source for that ?
patd··on Can Subscription Model Save Small-Town Movie Theaters?
In France (but probably in many other countries), UGC and others chains have an unlimited subscription plan (at around 20€ per month).

According to Wikipedia [1] it has 200.000 subscribers and generates 25% of the revenue.

patd··on France-based Mailjet raises $3.3 million for its cloud-based emailing platform
Interesting to note that two of the founders (Thibaud Elziere and Quentin Nickmans) seem to have raised €1.64 million for one of their other startup (TextMaster) 10 days ago from the same VC firm [1].

Apparently, eFounders (that participated in this round) is their incubator where they are building other French startups.

patd··on YC Rejection Emails Are Out
Can I also upgrade an existing account ? I took the 200k datapoint appsumo offer a while back.
patd··on Show HN: Chrome extension to unsubscribe from newsletters on Gmail
You should remove the hl=es parameter in the URL to the Chrome store or everybody will see the store in Spanish.
patd··on The Best Way to Find Aliens: Look for Their Solar Power Plants

patd··on Yandex Browser
I just tested it with my own extension, you can install Chrome extension from the Chrome webstore onto Yandex Browser.
patd··on Hackerface: Rapportive for HN
I'm currently porting my Firefox extension to the new Addon SDK. It does indeed look more like the Chrome/Safari/Opera model and makes things easier (like restartless addons which was hard to do before in Firefox).
patd··on Live From Nokia’s Windows Phone 8 Press Conference
Apparently, it's not living up to the expectations of the stock market. The stock is down 13%. Not sure what people were hoping for.

patd··on Facebook's S-1 Filing
If you are logged on Facebook, never go on the website but still see the like-button that are scattered all around the web, do you count as an "monthly active user" ?
patd··on Facebook's S-1 Filing
You need to buy them on the day they IPO. You will not be able to buy it at the IPO price but at the price of the first minute of trading.

On top of that, "a couple of hundred €" is probably not enough money. The fees to buy stocks on the Nasdaq is usually in the tens of euro. You'll probably have between 10 and 50 euros of fees at the cheaper online trading platforms.

You can also call your traditional bank to buy the stocks but the fees would probably be higher.

patd··on Lean Domain Search: Two Weeks After the HackerNews Launch
More searches could also mean that the results aren't great and users keep on searching before giving up. Google is successful when you search less.

Isn't "the number of users buying a domain" the best metrics or at least "the number of outgoing clicks to the registrars" ?

patd··on Why I'm a Pirate
I believe ploum still lives in France and in France when you buy a usb sticks, blank CDs and hard drives, you have to pay a "private copy tax" that can be in the tens of euros.

So even if he ignores it, he is still paying them money because media companies can't adjust or accept that they're doing it wrong.

patd··on My 3 hour weekend project: Fix My Movie Subtitles
I made that project :) It uses hashes for OpenSubtitles and TheSubDB. It uses file names for other sources (Podnapisi, SubtitleSource, ...)
patd··on Priceonomics (YC W12) Tells You What Everything is Worth
I don't know but before criticizing, you could just give it a try. Now searching for "iPhone 4" suggests "Apple iPhone 4" and "Apple iPhone 4S".

If they fixed it in such a short time, it was probably a bug and they really pushed a fix...
