patchorang··on A runner who leads every pack and then vanishes
I’ve found Vlad Xcel to have really good videos for this. For example: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=meeZydx-vhU

This is paid but also very good. https://uphillathlete.com/product/at-home-strength-training-...

The main thing 90% of people will benefit from is learning to activate their glutes, then strengthening their glutes. Clamshells are a great place to start.

A lot of people hurt their knees because their glutes don’t activate and are weak from sitting all day. This forces them to become quad dominate, which puts more strain on the knees.

patchorang··on Sanders calls for minimum salary of $60000 for public school teachers
One of the best teachers I ever had was our middle school chemistry teacher. He had to lifeguard during the summer to support his family. That seems pretty crazy to me.
patchorang··on Sanders calls for minimum salary of $60000 for public school teachers
1. Yes a lot of teacher have different summer jobs. 2. Means at least 100,000 3. Yes, it should be normal.
patchorang··on Show HN: I built a little online drum machine using 808 style samples
Interesting, I didn't come across Tone.js until now. It looks like it handles a few more things than Howler. Most useful for the drum machine would be scheduling. I'm just using setInterval, which isn't guaranteed to be accurate, but seems good enough for my use case.

I want to build some other browser based audio/synth tools. I'll have dig into Tone.js more for one of those, thanks. I'm re-learning to code with these projects, but the goal is to build a multiplayer web-based modular synth.

Woah, I made almost the same thing the other week https://beatmaker.adammenz.com/ https://github.com/patchorang/drummachine

https://github.com/patchorang/drummachine

It is, but bear with me as I'm just re-learning to code so it's a bit of a mess.

patchorang··on Ask HN: What have you created that deserves a second chance on HN?
This is awesome, I'm already using it. Thanks so much!

A few years ago a friend and I listened to one album a week from r/hiphopheads' Essential Albums List. It got me thinking about having an "Album club" like a book club. Each week the club's playlist would get updated with a new album or songs to listen to that week.

I may use this as some inspiration to make that.

patchorang··on Ask HN: What have you created that deserves a second chance on HN?
I made a drum machine that I think is pretty cool - https://main.d28ilu31tegyi1.amplifyapp.com/ I taught myself how to program 15+ years ago because I wanted to make music software. Fast forward 15 years, and I've spent my whole career as a designer for B2B Saas. I wanted to re-learn some development stuff and going back to my original inspiration seemed like a good idea. (Still a bit in progress and sorry doesn't work on mobile, there is some Web Audio stuff I haven't figure out for mobile yet)

I also built a small app to learn my piano chords. You can play along with a MIDI keyboard. https://www.learnyourchords.com/

patchorang··on Citizen scientists report global rapid reductions in the visibility of stars
Wow. What an awesome map. You can even see major highways in the western US.

I recently moved from the western US to the east. The public/opens lands are what I miss the most. I don't think many people out east even realize what public land is, how much there is, and how great it is. But this map really displays it.

Side note: What's up with Alberta? Same with northwestern North Dakota? I'm guess this is mining and/or oil operations?

patchorang··on Got laid off from Microsoft yesterday with 10.000 people
They are slowly popping. The two major ones are probably CMU's MHCI and University of Washington's HCI+D. I don't know about Washington, but CMU also has a PhD program in HCI.

patchorang··on The Quest for a Dumber Phone
I've posted this here before, but I've figured out a way that makes an iPhone work as a semi-smart phone for me.

I delete all app that I waste time in, but keep one that are useful. (I won't blow two hours scrolling Lyft, and it's very helpful sometimes) I then set screentime permissions to block websites I don't want to use (like reddit), and prevent app downloads. I set a screentime password and give it to my partner.

This way I get all the "benefits" of a smartphone with none of the scrolling and time wasting. It's also very easy to switch it back to a full smartphone, get the password from my partner and turn off screentime. I'll do this when I travel internationally for work.

Hope this setup helps some others.

patchorang··on Ask HN: Books that teach programming by building a series of small projects?
Not a book and webdev focused, but I've been doing https://fullstackopen.com/en/ and it's been great.

The chapters are structured so you are building 2 projects at once. One where you follow along with the chapter material with example code and explanations. And a second in the exercises.

I really like it because it introduces the concepts in the context of a project, but you can't get stuck because the code is there too. Then you need to really apply it in the exercises on your own project, without the example code.

I made a site the other day to help me practice my chords - https://learnyourchords.com

If you have a MIDI keyboard you can play along as it prompts you with chords, or if not you can use it like chord flashcards.

Nice, this will be a great reference for me as I'm learning all my chords. I built a little app the other day to help me practice the chords, you might like it. https://chords.adammenz.com/
patchorang··on Why are antennas popping up over the Salt Lake City foothills?
I don’t understand why the cartel would put these in such an obvious location. (But I also don’t understand why anyone would…)

They seem to be in obvious, high traffic areas. The one mentioned in the video is a short hike from the Utah capitol building. If you hike at all and live in salt lake, this is where you go. Especially in the winter. It seems like they were asking to be found.

It’s certainly less in the winter, but in the summer hundreds of people would hike or bike past this everyday.

patchorang··on The death of Rackspace’s ‘fanatical support’
I interned there around the same time. The office was an old mall. Apparently, there had been a shooting in/near the mall, which led to people not going and the mall going under. Rackspace bought the mall and converted more and more to office space as they needed it. If I recall correctly the slide was from the old food court balcony area down into the main floor. I agree, it was a very cool office.
patchorang··on Using ChatGPT as a Co-Founder
I'm starting a jigsaw puzzle company with my partner. I was working on the website/brand the other day and I wanted some clever copy to put on the website. I brainstormed for a few minutes, then I thought it'd be fun to see what ChatGPT could come up with.

Turns out, about half the copy we are using on the site is coming from ChatGPT. I came up with a few clever lines, but ChatGPT came up with more and faster. It produced some lines my partner and I legitimately laughed out loud at.

My copywriting skills are pretty bad. Even if ChatGPT's are "sort of basic", it's better than me. ChatGPT isn't replacing copywriters, but it's making the work they do much more accessible to people who aren't copywriters.

It felt like ~10 years ago the conversation was that "AI will do the tedious boring work and make more time to do the creative work". What actually seems to be happening is that the creative work is slowly being eaten by AI and giving it to the people who aren't good at that flavor of creative work.

Writing a few clever lines of copy for a indie puzzle company isn't the most creative work of all time, but it is still creative work. And it was done by AI. And it was done better than I could.

patchorang··on Leaving Spotify for freer pastures
I had the same issue with Spotify prioritizing playlists over albums. My roommate and I built a Spotify "record player". We printed out album covers and glued them to plywood squares. There is a QR code with the spotify URI on the back. We have a Pi with a camera on the stand. When the album is in the stand we play the album from the beginning, using the Spotify API. If you take the album off the music stops. You can't pause or skip forward or back.

patchorang··on Tumblr Announces Important Blue Internet Checkmarks
I find this hilarious. I’m not expecting things to head this way, but recent news make it seem like we are headed back to the the “internet we all miss”.

A year ago it seems inconceivable that two of the biggest social networks (fb, twitter) would be on their way out. It seemed like such a big ship with a lot of momentum, just chugging along. Things have changed so much since then, what a strange turn of events.
