passtheglass··on Did we market Knative wrong?
I couldnt ge knative to work nicely with gitops tools, and found some of the abstractions confusing and didn't really simplify anything, won't be using it again probably
passtheglass··on The myth of the driverless tube train
I don't understand why you can't have PEDs for multiple kinds of rolling stock. That is stated but never qualified. It seems like a tractable design problem considering there are a limited set of types of train you are serving.
passtheglass··on TikTok launching jobs service for Gen Z
I really hope this doesn't catch on, I hate the idea of the social mediafication of resumes.
passtheglass··on Berkshire: Bitcoin is ‘contrary to the interest of civilization.’
It's for people who take cash in hand.
passtheglass··on Berkshire: Bitcoin is ‘contrary to the interest of civilization.’
I'm confused by this statement. The primary use of the dollar is as a currency. The primary use of Bitcoin is as a currency. The fact that so much of Bitcoin's traded volume is used for speculation is actually an issue with excess dollar liquidity available for speculation, not because of some problem inherent to Bitcoin. That liquidity would just move to some other financial product that probably wouldn't make the news because the concept is too complicated to grok, unlike "BITCOIN BAD AND NOT REAL MONEY".
passtheglass··on Montana to cancel unemployment benefits to address severe workforce shortage
It's hard to even make enough money to buy a house/save for retirement, is there any wonder why people don't want to work, when all it affords them only a marginally less meagre existence, with no leisure time to enjoy it?
passtheglass··on Show HN: Control your Bose headphones from your Mac's menubar
You don't need a mobile app to set these headphones up at all. Everything is available on the device with phyiscal buttons (part of the reason it's such a good pair of headphones), the tech existed before people became conditioned on having apps for everythng.
passtheglass··on Brian Armstrong seeking cofounder on HN (2012)
I think bitcoin in specific doesn't matter here, crypto in general is here to stay and there is a very high value on trust/goodwill for financial exchanges of any kind, not to mention all the regulatory barriers these days.
passtheglass··on The looming software kill-switch lurking in aging Playstation hardware
If you read the article you'd see that there's already a custom firmware that solves it.
passtheglass··on Supreme Court sides with developers in Google vs. Oracle
I wonder how long it is before Google is fighting the precedent they set in this case.
passtheglass··on Whimsical Guide to Compensation
Salary levels are discrete, performance is continuous... you can expect to lose high performers if you have rigid salary levels. I assume at larger companies that is less of an issue because the marginal effect on output of even the high performing developers is small relative to total output, with some outliers.
passtheglass··on Google advised mental health care when workers complained about racism, sexism
It's surprising people would even think about this let alone say it.
passtheglass··on The new Google Pay repeats all the same mistakes of Google Allo
Well Google is only good if you're looking for paid reviews/blog posts and populist articles from very popular media outlets. I should hope people would realise how far their search quality has decreased in the past 2-3 years (for text search)
passtheglass··on Malaysian Grandfather Is Facing Death for Weed
I agree with your point, but many Asian countrys' pouplaces' attitudes to drugs are deeply influenced by the damage caused by British opium trade. It is more deeply rooted than a problem of education I think, unlike in the West.
passtheglass··on Before buying a NYT subscription, here's what it'll take to cancel it
I agree, it's particularly egregious that they spent the extra development time and money to only have this feature in locales where they are legally forced to.
passtheglass··on Google is now a Visionary Sponsor of the Python Software Foundation
To me that is more like evidence of a well-engineered codebase.
passtheglass··on The Vaccine Had to Be Used. He Used It. He Was Fired
How is this not defamation by the district attorney?
passtheglass··on Select a muscle and it provides the exercises to workout the selected muscle
