partido3619463··on Pipenv: Promises a Lot, Delivers Little (2020)
Constraints are not the same thing. Poetry locks the entire dependency closure. You can install with “no-deps” option, but then you have to specify specific versions of every dependency in requirements.txt

Same issue since April 20?? Atlassian-level downtime
partido3619463··on Tell HN: Banned from LinkedIn for Reporting Wickr Drug Spam
Where else do you think people are going for informal networking / keeping up with old contacts?

(Ie just the messaging part)

partido3619463··on LGTM – A simple pull request approval system
“ Pull requests are locked and cannot be merged until the minimum number of approvals are received. Project maintainers can indicate their approval by commenting on the pull request and including LGTM (looks good to me) in their approval text.”

Isn’t this how protected branches and github review functionality works anyways? What does this module add?

partido3619463··on Microsoft to Reportedly Recognize Raven Software’s Union After Aquisition
Might be better to switch the link to a clearer article. Eg this one has more nuance: https://kotaku.com/xbox-phil-spencer-raven-qa-union-activisi...
partido3619463··on Ask HN: Senior Engineers with ADHD, any mental/physical structures for work?
Collaborate with other people and draft off of their organizational skills. Pairing can make you way more productive + it’s a good way to get to better ideas.
partido3619463··on The silenced deaths of the Shanghai 2022 lockdown
Given the other stories posted on this site (universally claiming lockdowns were pointless and no medical reason for them), makes me question whether these stories are representative.
partido3619463··on Twin Anxieties of the Engineer/Manager Pendulum
Have folks had success at offering to be a junior dev to learn a skill? (Eg I’d love to learn how to set up these complex ML systems and play with data… but I don’t have much formal experience)

Beyond that, I feel this anxiety about leaving management so hard. I’ve been managing for 3-4 years now and I worry my skills are too atrophied.

I miss being able to create and solve problems in the back of my mind.

But then it feels hard giving up the ability to influence direction and take care of people.

But my heart is happiest when I’m mentoring someone or talking how to deal with a tough problem. I barely get to do that anymore :(

partido3619463··on The tech industry controls CS conference funding. What are the dangers?
It’s really shitty to use the acronym “FAGMA” instead of “FAANG”. It’s clear homophobia and sucks to read. (I assume it’s a joke because (1) “FAMGA” works just as well and has no slur and (2) quick search for it yields very few results).

Hopefully someone will take it down for this or other reasons.

partido3619463··on I can no longer compile my first Flash game
Others have commented similarly, but as a user - Flash sucked. It meant you had to use a confusing “novel” UI, that the page would be slow or possibly not work. You might not be able to copy/paste text. Almost certainly not accessible.
partido3619463··on People don't work as much as they say
4 hours a day of real work seems low, but certainly not 40 hours a week.
partido3619463··on A routine gem update ended up creating $73k worth of subscriptions
No they refunded everyone immediately.
partido3619463··on JSON Path Working Group
Why not standardize JMESPath instead? C.f. https://gatling.io/2019/07/introducing-jmespath-support/

I’m not an expert here, but seems easier to use something well specified rather than attempting to knit multiple specs together.

partido3619463··on WSJ report claims that AWS commands 41%, Microsoft Azure 20% and Google Cloud 6%
They shut down services with more rapid end dates than AWS. Also they leave many useful services in beta forever and then use that to justify shutting them down.
partido3619463··on The American dream is on life support in the Bay Area

partido3619463··on Ask HN: How to stay motivated reading textbooks?

partido3619463··on Is Web3 anything?
With the neighbors example, don’t you need to trust your neighbors to actually confirm you did the work?

What happens if you put in begonias and they wanted daisies? Or they just don’t want to pay you $200 and see they can back out and have you holding the bag.

More generally, I still don’t understand how the “third party oracle” issue (ie how do you make real world add to blockchain) doesn’t undermine the trust less idea.

partido3619463··on Software obsoleting faster than hardware
Feels like onus should be on phone manufacturers to ensure new OS updates work on old hardware.

Instead, Xiaomi should release an operating system update. iOS 15 is compatible back to 6s (released in 2015), tho even 6 years of support seems short.

If you want to “BuyItForLife”, perhaps buy from a phone manufacturer committed to supporting OS updates for your phone.

What’s going on with Android ecosystem that old phone support is hard?

partido3619463··on Partitioning GitHub’s relational databases to handle scale
> It's such a high end niche that there's only a handful of companies that can even run the benchmark competitively

Alternatively, you don’t see benchmarks because Oracle’s licensing bans posting benchmarks - https://www.brentozar.com/archive/2018/05/the-dewitt-clause-...
