paride5745··on Greensboro Man Creates Dating App Where He's the Only Guy Allowed
I matched with my wife on OKcupid, for me it worked well.
paride5745··on Upgrading Messaging on Android in the U.S. with RCS
I made the switch a month ago, and while I miss some things from Android (e.g. a clean way to change default apps, and a nice share menu/framework), the overall experience is so much better I am regretting not switching two years ago with a iPhone SE, instead of getting my previous One Plus 5.

And regarding Messaging, in EU the default is pretty much Whatsapp anyway, with some pockets of Viber and Telegram, so iMessage or Google Hangout was never a real option here.

paride5745··on Google Begins Testing Extension Manifest V3 in Chrome Canary
Moved back to Firefox this weekend. It feels so much snappier than Chrome. So far I only miss SuperSorter (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/supersorter/hjebfg...).
paride5745··on Free Pascal has now a WebAssembly back end
<irony> Time for a COBOL WebAssembly backend. </irony>

Congrats to the FreePascal team for the amazing product, whenever I miss my teenage years with Turbo Pascal I fire up FreePascal and relax.

paride5745··on Show HN: NextStep – Product to help SaaS companies improve conversion rates
Change name, not only is confusing, but you might end up being forced to change it if Apple decide to go after you.
paride5745··on The new Dropbox
Out of curiosity, what do you use now?

I just went full Linux and I am looking for a good Cloud storage for my docs and pics.

paride5745··on Microsoft Defender Comes to the Mac

Just wait...

paride5745··on Bye, Bye, Google
Yeah, me too.

I put stuff in my watch later list during the day and then watch videos in the evening on my PC.

paride5745··on Bye, Bye, Google
I watch mostly from the PC (I'm old school I guess), so NewPipe does not work for me :/
paride5745··on Bye, Bye, Google
I almost finished de-google-fy my digital life as well, but I really can't fully leave Youtube, there is simply too much good content there.
paride5745··on Facebook will shut down its controversial market research app for iOS

paride5745··on Why I use old hardware
While I love those old Thinkpads (and I have one), my main issue with these posts is that nobody talks about battery life.

If I work on a laptop, I don't want to have to look for a power socket around, I need something to work on battery for at least half day.

paride5745··on Going old school: how I replaced Facebook with email
I deleted Facebook almost one year ago and I didn't have any issue either.

I made a few Telegram and Viber groups with people I want to stay in touch with, and we invite each other this way to evenings out or parties.

I have Twitter to keep up to date with musicians or news websites, and LinkedIn to keep in touch with ex-colleagues.

IMHO who says "if they don't write to you they are not your friends" is a bit lazy, as you can have groups on IMs (Telegram, Signal, Viber) and stay off Facebook property without too many issues.

paride5745··on Visual Studio Code 1.30 Released
They need to merge them sometime, the have two overlapping products, both open source, and it does not make sense to keep them both.
paride5745··on Visual Studio Code 1.30 Released
Now time to work on vscode 2, with a merge between vscode and atom.
paride5745··on German federal office publishes Windows 10 telemetry analysis
I guess the document about Google is so big they have issues uploading it to the web server!
paride5745··on Ask HN: Best alternative to Gmail?
I am switching to outlook.com + cock.li (for anonymous emails).

Keeping Gmail only for my Youtube addiction...

There are better alternatives out there, but outlook.com offers what I need for free.

I know it's not a very privacy friendly platform, but with many of my contacts on Gmail, there is no point in going full privacy like with Protonmail IMHO.

paride5745··on [dead]
How will this impact OpenJDK?

Or is it time to migrate to .Net Core or something else?

paride5745··on Ask HN: Are there any reasonable alternatives to MacBook Pro for developer?
This.

I'm on a ThinkPad t470s, amazing little machine, I love it more than my old MacBook Pro 2015.

paride5745··on Evolution of the English Alphabet
Same in Italian, we call it "I greca".
paride5745··on NixOS 18.03 Released
You really do not want to use Arch for production, enterprise systems.
paride5745··on Cluster and app management services in Docker Cloud are shutting down on May 21
How long until redhat buys docker?
paride5745··on Nix 2.0 Released
My thoughts exactly.

Some time ago, I asked how to integrate NixOS in an existing infrastructure managed by Chef/Ansible.

I was told I was wrong to even think about that and that Nix is a better system.

Well, wrong. If you have a few thousands servers with a system, you cannot ask to migrate all to a new system without some integration with the old one first.

paride5745··on Dtrace for Linux
I use OpenIndiana since its beginning, it's fine but IMHO not there for serious work. FreeBSD with ZFS is miles ahead.

And the CDDL is not fine, as it is not compatible with GPL, which makes it impossible to have it official in the Linux kernel.

paride5745··on Dtrace for Linux
Time for ZFS now!

Even better yet, a new OpenSolaris under GPL instead of CDDL.

paride5745··on Berlin's Plan to Become a City for Cyclists
Cyclists need to be trained as well.

I live in Berlin and too many times cyclists almost run me over and didn't even acknowledged the fact, just flipped the bird at me.

I have never been in a dangerous situation with cars, just with cyclists.
