parfe··on Why I love Snapchat
Maybe someone replies. Maybe they don't. It's a low effort way of saying "Hey, I find this thing is worth 10 seconds of your time." My friend sent me a snap of her niece throwing a temper tantrum. It was funny. I chuckled. It disappeared. We got lunch weeks later, and I asked if her niece ever calmed down. She laughed, we moved on. She got to share a funny moment in her life with me (and presumably other people) because she thought I might be interested.

If she posted on facebook? You'd have people asking what was wrong, giving advice on how to calm a child, commenting about child abuse, and writing essays about the ethics of posting children to social media. Whatever.

parfe··on Many See I.R.S. Penalties as More Affordable Than Health Insurance
What'd you have before the ACA?
parfe··on Italian Mafias killing less but infiltrating more businesses
It's the plot to Sons of Anarchy.
parfe··on Antidepressants taken during pregnancy increase risk of autism
>Suicide is the leading cause of death of mothers in the perinatal period

Do you have a source for that? Looks like homicide remains the leading cause of death of women during the perinatal period, and in general the greatest risk a pregnant woman faces is her partner.

parfe··on Gaming the H-1B system for good
Calling the program indentured servitude didn't test well with focus groups.
parfe··on A lot of what we think we know about WWII is wrong
>the germans could only build one [bismark]

The Germans built two Bismark-class ships. The other sailed under the name Tirpitz

parfe··on ‘The Senator Be Embezzling’
What makes him think he's any better to deserve to be sentenced to the comfort of his own home than the thousand other felons he's housed with? Because he violated campaign laws and not drug laws? Or because he had money he shouldn't have to face actual prison time? Or that he had powerful friends advocating on his behalf?

Another upstanding citizen who doesn't care about an issue until it personally affects him. Where was his concern of the expiration date of frozen meet when he had the power to do something about it? Didn't care much about the animals in prison then.

parfe··on Internet Radio Copyright Is Dumb: A Comprehensive Explainer
So go to see that artist performing live where they get a far more substantial chunk of money. Buy some merchandise direct from the band.

The antiquated idea is that an artist should be getting money for doing absolutely nothing because they once recorded song months or years ago. If they want to be paid they are perfectly capable of going out and working for it.

parfe··on Sonic tractor beams that can lift and move objects using soundwaves
Probably because more people saw the last star wars film opening weekend than have watched doctor who in its entire history.
parfe··on Dropbox has open-sourced Zulip
Why would reinventing jabber federation require bitcoin?
parfe··on A former Microsoft employee is suing over sex discrimination
Unsurprising, but disappointed, that the article opens by typing one woman losing a gender discrimination to the claims of another. The Microsoft CEO told women to shut up and accept what they are given. Not really surprised at the suit.

Meanwhile, the Business Insider author appears to be semi-literate and they do not seem to employ an editor.

>The new Ellen Pao his here

>She also says she lost out on a promotion opportunity in 2012 while she on maternity leave.

>...many women supported Pao and was happy that she brought public attention to the situation.

parfe··on In defense of PowerShell
I dislike windows (and by extension, powershell) because a solution such as changing the port the webserver runs on looks something like:

    New-ItemProperty IIS:\sites\DemoSite -name bindings -value @{protocol="http";bindingInformation=":8081:"}
http://www.iis.net/learn/manage/powershell/powershell-snap-i...

What did I just modify? Is it persisted to the hard disk? How do i back that up? How do I revert the change? How do I move this change (and 20 others) from one server to another? It's three months later, and I want to do something similar, where can I find the current state of DemoSite and mimic it for DevSite?

I like plain text. Clearly companies succeed on microsoft products and people make money administering them. Doesn't mean I have to like it.

parfe··on Hacker shows he can locate, unlock and remote start GM vehicles
The remote start function appeared the in fourth movie, Live Free or Die Hard with the plot revolving around a "fire sale" cyber attack. Die Hard 3 features Sam Jackson and the theft of gold under cover of binary fluid bombs.
parfe··on Show HN: Spot the Drowning Child
>hoik

I learned a new word today.

>2. To lift something up wildly.

parfe··on Ask HN: How do I keep child porn out of my site?
I'm disgusted replying to you. A bridge too far?

Anyway, here's your API https://developer-westus.microsoftmoderator.com/docs/service...

Guess you can be trendy AND help child rape victims.

parfe··on Supreme Court denies review of Google v. Oracle API copyright case [pdf]
Does the ISO standardization process include a copyright license or assignment? Copyright had pretty specific rules over who owns a work. Assigning your copyright to someone else requires certain explicit steps.
parfe··on Why Don’t the Poor Rise Up?
Applause for your cherry picked quote to make yourself seem insightful.

The author, in the sentence before, pointed out: "For those in the bottom quintile, household income in inflation-adjusted dollars has dropped sharply, from $13,787 in 2000 to $11,651 in 2013"

He then calculates the concrete number to convey to the reader that for 64 million americans life has gotten harder.

But hey, you earned some internet points so thanks for the contribution.

parfe··on How to Fight Unconscious Bias and Become a Better Ally
Also they offer:

>Hot meals prepared on site, free drinks, fruits and snacks

Young people are dumb and think of dinner at work as a perk, rather than a red flag that the company abuses its employees and steals their personal time.

Why have friends and family when you can spend your nights and weekends at the office with your coworkers and manager?

parfe··on Uber: Disability Laws Don’t Apply to Us
Airbnb, Uber, and the unbonded money transmitter of the month, are all making obscene amount of money breaking the law and investors keep rewarding them.

It's really easy in home construction to make a profit if you hire illegal immigrants, pay them an illegal wage, don't carry insurance, don't pay payroll taxes, and don't pay overtime. If only I could hide all that behind an app, I'd call it a startup and become a billionaire!

It's to the point where I have serious issues with the morals of people working for and investing in such outright abusive companies. You might "just" be a programmer, but you're still earning your paycheck breaking the law and skimming money away from businesses that are legit, protect their customers, and exercise the base level of ethics. But I guess you personally didn't abandon a handicapped person on the side of the road, or deny a trip to a black neighborhood, so you don't feel like you did anything wrong?

parfe··on Google Hangouts doesn’t use end-to-end encryption, law enforcement can access it
Duh? I can access hangouts from arbitrary browsers and devices which means, at best, Google has "my" private key and that is the same as having the plain text messages.

This is like the yearly "Dropbox lies about encrypting your data!" post. Any service that gives you access to your data via a browser without a key only you control is the same as it being "unencrypted" even if on their end they encrypt it with their key before it hits a physical disk.

parfe··on Why Lisp?
The best you'll get are examples of something solvable in Python being "beautiful" in Lisp. Then some real world Lisp examples will be references to a 20 year old storefront generator and the initial release of reddit.

Lisp(s) are certainly better than Python in every way, except when it comes to successful projects completed.

parfe··on The Causes and Consequences of Distinctly Black Names (2004) [pdf]
Plenty of Americans of African descent have no idea where their ancestors came from thanks to that whole slavery thing. You're asking why black people didn't pick a random county in Africa, pick a random language from that country then choose a random name from any number of cultures speaking that language.

Instead of what they did, which is draw from their own culture which is as old as America itself.

parfe··on “Safe Spaces” and the Mote in America's Eye
>He didn't do that.

You must have read his writing differently than I considering he wrote:

>I call these young people out for valuing illusory and subjective safety over liberty.

parfe··on “Safe Spaces” and the Mote in America's Eye
Very brave of Ken to call out women, black people, and the LGBT community.

Safe spaces don't insulate minority groups from ideas they don't like. Those groups are exposed to ideas they don't like all the time, every day, via every avenue of media.

A safe space is a moment of solace to discuss issues specific groups are particularly affected by without being berated by the 18 year old generic white male libertarian who seems so keen on letting the minority groups how they should be behaving.

parfe··on No Longer an Inspiration
The author writes: "After deliberating, the judges announced a new “Most Inspirational” category" but this category is not new. The author seems to have misinterpreted the course of events. Based on clicking the blog's twitter link, this is the hackathon attended by the author:

https://2013.spaceappschallenge.org/location/new-york/

https://2014.spaceappschallenge.org/location/new-york/

https://2015.spaceappschallenge.org/location/new-york-ny/

And the project in question that didn't deserve the award, in the author's opinion: http://aekblaw.wix.com/asteroidascent

they also have a sample curricula http://media.wix.com/ugd/57f674_99d136685bfe400f80022bc3652e...

and a code repo https://github.com/spaceappsnyc/asteroidascent

parfe··on Ask HN: How would you implement a verifiable open-source web application?
Why not a conventional desktop application? Those still exist and work quite nicely. I work on one everyday. What benefit does a user receive from trusting code running on your machine?
parfe··on OpenSSL Security Advisories – LibreSSL Largely Unaffected
The patch for this issue is integrated in LibreSSL 2.1.6:

     * CVE-2015-0207 - Segmentation fault in DTLSv1_listen
LibreSSL is not vulnerable, but the fix was safe to merge.

parfe··on Why I Choose PostgreSQL Over MySQL/MariaDB
Write up an article about the pros/cons compared to mysql and postgres and submit it.

edit: Seriously, the google results for firebirdsql vs postgresql are abysmal.

parfe··on Why Children Need Chores
>Correlation is not causation.

Case fucking closed then. I cherish the in depth commentary Hn has to offer regarding scientific studies

parfe··on Ask HN: The rising “Hackathon Hackers” culture
1. Get a PAID internship

2. Get a part time job

3. Graduate

4. Get a full time job

5. Do things for fun that don't involve computers.

The fact I happen to interact with X framework in Y language, running on Z environment has zero relevence in my life. I more quickly ignore people talking about Ruby/Python/Javascript running Rails/Django/Node than the homeless person trying to wash my windshield.

You get too involved in tech communities and you forget what the real world looks like. I've literally met better people while delivering HIV test kits than while dealing with HPC systems. Find good people rather than defaulting to people like you who make money.
